CARETAKERS (Physician’s Assistants) OF THE BODY!

The Calling of Matthew (Levi) Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him. As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him. Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.) But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?” When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” – Mark 2:13-17 (NLT)

Jesus is, indeed, the Great Physician (note scripture above)! But, he has also called us to be caretakers (physician’s assistants, if you will) of His Body—the Church. And so we will all be learning to do this, as we intentionally work to grow in our faith together during this school/ministry year… As most of you know, I’ve recently begun a professional coaching experience with the Rev. Nelson Searcy and his Senior Pastor’s Tele-Coaching Network (Leadership Insights). Under his guidance, I’ll be learning more and more about the ‘systems’ of the Body [of Christ] that need to be healthy, in order for the

whole Body [Church] to be healthy. I’ve been through a couple of coaching sessions already. The first was an overview of all of the systems that I’ll be studying—good Lord willing—for the next 3 years or more. During the last coaching session, we launched into the first of the systems that we need to learn—The Assimilation System. Now, don’t get too excited about the name of this first system. Basically, it’s all about biblical hospitality. And, to put it in a nutshell, the practical reason this is important is so that we can ‘shut the back door’ for those who visit our church so that they will want to come back and be a part of what God is doing here! I’m thankful that we did not wait until I started into this coaching network to begin working on this ‘system,’ or way we do hospitality. We’ve been at it for a few years now, through our Connections Ministry. And my hat goes off to both Beth Schlueter and Tammy Leiser (Did you know they were sisters?) for ‘getting all of this’—understanding the importance of this—before I did. God has sent us some amazing ‘caretakers of the Body.’ Now, with my increased knowledge of this system, we’ll go deeper into how we welcome those who God sends to us—a real gift, if you think about it… For further study on this system (since we are all called to be ‘caretakers of the Body’), check out Searcy’s book called, “Fusion: Turning First-Time Guests into Fully-Engaged Members of Your Church.” It’s an eye-opener. And next month, we’ll move on to talk briefly about the second ‘system’ of the Body that I’ll be learning—The Stewardship System. MISSION & OUTREACH NEWS

HOMELESS SHELTER OF IOWA COUNTY We are continuing to support the Iowa County Homeless Shelter through our church. If you would like to donate money or items for the shelter contact Jeff or Juanita Starr. You may earmark your check to homeless shelter. Our current needs are: shampoo, dish soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, kitchen towels, paper towels. SHOEBOX MINISTRY We will be filling 100 shoe boxes and preparing them to ship out on Wednesday evening, October 3rd. This will be an ALL4ONE group activity for October. Please bring a roll of wrapping paper with you. These shoe boxes are Christmas presents to needy children throughout the world, including the United States. LOOSE CHANGE October and November loose change will be going to support the Iowa County Thanksgiving & Christmas Meals. Currently we do not have enough money to support these two outreaches this year. We have not needed to ask for funding before from the public. We serve 300-400 people per event. Our church is hosting Thanksgiving this year. ALUMINUM CANS Please continue to bring your aluminum cans to church. All monies from the aluminum will go to "Helping Hand", a church outreach to local people in need of assistance. We only help individuals/familes once a year.

All women of the church are invited and encouraged to attend the following events.

Local Unit Meetings and special happenings:

The next meeting of our local unit will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 4 in Fellowship Hall. There will be an officer’s meeting at 6:30 PM. We will be electing officers for 2013. The Evening Star circle will present the program and the Grace Post Circle will serve refreshments.

The Evening Star circle will meet on Monday, October 8 at 7:00PM at the home of Jeanne Kapotas. Martha Boyer will be the co-hostess and Gayl Stewart will present the devotions. The Grace Post circle will meet on Monday, October 15 at 1:30PM at the home of Lois Wieland. Jean Leigh will present the devotions. The annual Fall Rummage/Bake Sale is scheduled for Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13. The hours are 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM on Friday, and 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM on Saturday. The “Bag Sale” will be between the hours of 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM on Saturday. The Bake Sale is to be held on Saturday morning only. The “set-up” dates are Wednesday, October 10 and Thursday, October 11. Items for the rummage sale can be brought in starting at 9:00 AM on both days. Bake Sale items should be priced and can be brought in on Friday evening or early Saturday. We will need many workers to help set up and to work during the sale. Please sign-up on the forms that you will find on the small table in fellowship Hall. This annual fund-raiser helps us to meet our goals of mission on the local, state, national, and international levels. Thank you to all who will work and also to everyone who donates items to sell.

UMW District and Conference Events:

The Wisconsin Conference Annual Gathering of UMW will be held Friday evening and Saturday, October 19-20. It is to be held at the Sun Prairie UMC, in Sun Prairie. The theme is “Faith, Hope, Love in Action, Singing God’s Songs”. Workshops will be held that focus on the missions of the United Methodist Women. Registration information is available from Rosemary Edwards (930-5955) or Charlene Mingst (935-5758). The deadline for registration is Sunday, October 7.

The annual fall Coulee District “Day of Enrichment” will be held on Saturday, October 27 at the Richland Center Peace UMC in Richland Center. The day begins with Registration and Fellowship at 9:00 AM followed by a time of singing and worship. Martha Boyer will speak on “Love in Action – Work in the Hispanic Community”. There is no advance registration for this meeting but a $1.00 donation will be collected at the door. Lunch will be furnished by the District.

A STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE FOR YOUR CHURCH

#223 Giving is…recognizing God’s priorities – “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21)

As Adam and Nicole started planning their Halloween costumes for this year, Adam said, “I sure like all the candy we get on Halloween. But, I still think about all the people who were hurt by Hurricane Isaac.”

His sister Nicole remembered her Sunday School teacher telling them about how they could Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF and help other children have clean water to drink, medicine, and warm blankets. She said, “You know, the blankets and bottles of water we took to church to send to the hurricane victims probably helped. But, I’m sure those people need more help. If we Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF we’ll be able to help them some more and help other people in other places, too.”

“Hey,” Adam said, “We could talk to our friends about having a carnival or haunted house to raise money, too.” Nicole said, “Yeah, and that money could be given to the United Methodist Committee on Relief. You know, 100% of what we give there goes to help the people who need it most. Let’s go ask Mom – she’ll help!”

Let’s not overlook the ways our children can be encouraged to be good

stewards and leaders in living the gospel of Christ among us throughout

the upcoming holiday season. We invite everyone to consider creative

ways of giving from all your resources to share with those who now

have nothing. Cash isn’t the only gift you can offer. Consider giving

appreciated stock, life insurance policies, mutual fund shares, and

appreciated property or land. Contact our office if we can assist you in making a gift of any of these

types of assets to assist with the Hurricane Relief, another UM

NEW BEGINNINGS New Beginnings of Southwestern Wisconsin, Inc. is in need of several items: toasters, microwaves, boys & girls clothes size 3-6, mens 2X and bigger tops, furniture, small kitchen tables, kitchen chairs, money ($625 month for rent, $200-500 month gas. Our mission is to provide household necessities to individuals and families with no cost to the recipient. All the items are delivered free of cost to the home.
