The events need your support as an ASSC member. Bring friends!

Please review again the job descriptions when emailed out to you (or check the website) and think about volunteering for a task, being on a Committee, or being on the Board next year. There will be positions available when we hold our elections in December. If you are interested in any, please contact me.

In the meantime, enjoy the upcoming workshops ... they are a great way to meet members and outside artists, as well as do the thing we all enjoy – create beautiful artwork!

With Thanksgiving approaching and all the troubles around the world, isn’t it great that we can create beautiful things and share artistic conversations with friends ... be thankful. I know I am – everyday!

Regards, Sonja

“ No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an

artist.” Oscar Wilde

David Langevin Workshop

“Whether local, out-of-town, or out-of-province, all artists attending the David Langevin workshop went home inspired and informed. In his charming, enthusiastic manner, David encouraged each of us to push through to new levels of painting. The painting workshop as well as the Art of Business session exceeded expectations. We are so fortunate to have this outstanding Canadian artist come to enrich our artistic endeavours in such a fine space as our Ottewell Center.” Thanks to Lorraine Schuld for this report.

Sharon Bamber Workshop

Sharon Bamber delivered an intense and successful workshop. Her "notan" and color exercises prepared the class to really plan the art piece that they envisioned. The resulting pastel pieces produced the second day attested to the success of her teaching. Thanks to Ellen Kempers for this report.

Library Corner

Greetings,

Welcome to Fall!

We didn’t get the usual new stuff in the fall - school supplies and new clothes and so on - but the library does have some new books to offer you. People have donated these over the summer and in September. We haven’t catalogued them yet, but a quick glance through the boxes reveals quite a few watercolour books. Come to the Library Corner at the October meeting to check out the new resources.

And just a reminder: If you do have any unwanted or unread art books at home, please come and talk to us about donating them to the ASSC library. Other ASSC members will find them useful and a joy to read.

Here’s a book review by Vern Wall, a library committee member, about a fascinating book we have on our shelves right now.

CONVERSATIONS IN PAINT: A NOTEBOOK OF FUNDAMENTALS

BY CHARLES DUNN

The subtitle is the best description of what is contained in the 209 pages of this complete account of what painting is all about. The author is from New Zealand and a well-respected twentieth-century painter.

The book is divided into six sections:

• Seeing • Principles • Materials • The Bridge • Procedure • Learning

Page 9: Newsletter October 2017 - artstrathcona.com · October 1 – deadline to enter the November/December show in the Loft. Email asscgallery@gmail.com. Fall Show “Celebrating Canadian

Moving through the book you will find on the left side of each page a column of comments and quotes relating specifically to the section you are studying. Each section is colour-coded to easily find the section you wish to review.

Illustrations are abundant. This is in fact a complete sketchbook of the author’s teachings. The illustrations are watercolor style as are many of the sketches we are accustomed to. Every point seems to have picture to go with it and makes all of the subjects easy to understand.

The book ends with a great bibliography for the reader to further study from other sources.

This book of 209 pages will take some time to go through. So be prepared to set aside daily study time to get the best from it.

See you at the October meeting!

Kind regards,

The Library Committee

“If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.” Marc Chagall

Sherwood Park Photography Group

of the Art Society of Strathcona County Hello all,

At our September meeting we have a presentation on Landscape photography and tips on local adjustments in Lightroom.

For our October meeting we will be covering panning, motion blur and freeze motion.

We will also be covering the settings for displaying images on Facebook and we will be revisiting final instructions for the photo contest.

Images for review will be on landscape photography.

Keep posting your images on Facebook!
