FIGHTING ALZHEIMER’S FOR AUSTRALIA

2015Alzheimer’s ACT has had a long and close relationship with Glenn Rees, the out-going National Chief Executive Officer, of Alzheimer’s Australia. So it was with a heavy heart but fond memories we held a farewell morning tea in December to say Goodbye.

FAREWELLS ANDNEW BEGINNINGS

Mr Rees was appointed CEO of Alzheimer’s Australia in 2000 and in 2013 was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to community health, aged care and dementia. Mr Rees is well-known for his long involvement in the aged care sector, including chairing the Nursing Homes and Hostels Review in 1985. Glenn leaves to take up his new role as Chair of Alzheimer’s Disease International and continue his work as a consumer advocate.

Glenn was presented with some very personal gifts created by members of our Art Group: a duo of portraits by Les Makai and butler’s tray with a mosaic inlay created by Les, Claas Van Kampen and Gerard McDonell. The artists put a lot of thought into the gifts with the design of the tray referencing Glenn’s British origins and the portraits in different styles - one realistic and the other the artist’s interpretation of Glenn’s association with dementia and the brain.

The incoming National CEO, Carol Bennett was welcomed by Alzheimer’s ACT in December. Ms Bennett has been a leader in the Australian national health policy area for a number of years. MESSAGE FROM THE NEW ALZHEIMER’S AUSTRALIA ACTBOARD PRESIDENT

Happy New Year to all of you. I trust that you have had a very peaceful Christmas and a restful holiday period.

I would like to share with you some of our key activities and priorities for 2015. We face many challenges as an organisation and I am very confident our Board and staff can meet them and also improve the services we offer those in the ACT who are living with dementia and those who care for them.

Key priorities for our organisation over the next 12 months include:A new Strategic Plan - we face many challenges and changes and we need to ensure our Board and staff are alert, agile and responsive to them A new strategic plan will help us do that. We are busy consulting our consumer network and staff ahead of a planning workshop for the Board and management team on Saturday, 28 February. The new plan will help us deal with the challenges and continue to improve our services and support to those impacted by dementia.Securing better accommodation - we need this to not only improve the work environment for our staff, but also to provide better services and facilities to our consumers.Building on our Fundraising efforts - we have made great progress over the last 12 months and I thank all those who have assisted us. We are developing a fund raising strategy which optimises the use of our resources and maximises our potential returns to cover the shortfalls in government funding.

Continuing to position Alzheimer’s ACT as a major player with the politicians and bureaucrats - we will continue to build on relationships with ACT and Federal politicians, government agencies and other organisations in the sector. This will help us to better influence policy and program development for the benefit of those impacted by dementia.Transitioning successfully to the NDIS in 2015 will potentially impact on our funding, particularly funding that has come through the ACT HACC program. We will be working to ensure that the needs of our consumers are well understood by the ACT Government and their officials.

I am very confident that we can meet all of thesechallenges and more. We have a very talented, experienced and committed team, ably lead by Jane, and supported by a skilled and committed Board, guiding and government management as necessary.

On a personal level, I will be trying to engage with our consumers to better understand their needs and how we can improve our services and support.

Best Wishes

Greg FraserPresident

MEDIA RELEASE

The brainy New Year’s resolution!

In what Alzheimer’s Australia ACT is describing as the brainy New Year’s resolution Jane Allen, CEO of Alzheimer’s Australia ACT is encouraging Australians to take 5 simple steps to maximise their brain health in 2015.

“These include looking after your heart, being physically active, challenging your brain, eating healthily and enjoying social activity. These lifestyle factors have a significant impact on a person’s risk of developing dementia and other chronic diseases,” Jane Allen said. “The good news is that it’s never too late for people to modify their lifestyles to lower their risk of dementia. The beginning of 2015 is the perfect time to start.”

Research suggests that up to half the cases of Alzheimer’s disease worldwide are potentially attributable to health and lifestyle factors.

Here are the five tips to help you start the New Year with a brain-healthy lifestyle:

1. Look after your heart – what’s good for your heart is good for your brainThe risk of developing dementia appears to increase as a result of conditions that affect the heart or blood vessels, particularly when these occur at mid-life.

2. Be physically active – exercise gives the brain a healthy boostRegular physical exercise is associated with better brain function and reduced risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Follow the National Physical Activity Guidelines by building up at least 30 minutes of moderately intense physical activity on most – but preferably all – days.

3. Mentally challenge your brain – the brain likes to tackle something it doesn’t knowScientists have found that challenging the brain with new activities helps to build new brain cells and strengthen connections between them. The brain benefits by having to tackle something it doesn’t know.

4. Follow a healthy diet – what you eat could affect the brainEvidence suggests that a healthy, balanced diet may help in maintaining brain health and functionality but more research is needed to understand if there are specific foods that may be able to reduce the risk of dementia. Follow the National Dietary Guidelines.

5. Enjoy social activity – socialising is good for the brainSocial engagement has been found to have benefits for other health factors related to cognitive functioning such as vascular conditions and depression. It is mentally stimulating and may contribute to building brain reserve which then contributes to a lower dementia risk.

You can download the free brain health app, BrainyApp, available on Apple and Android devices.

2 4 SUMMER 2015

It is estimated that 1.2 million Australians are currently caring for someone with dementia. Caring for somebody with dementia can become more complicated by the presence of behavioural problems (e.g. depression, anxiety, apathy, aggression) in the person with dementia. These behavioural problems can contribute significantly to carer burden and distress.

The BeSyDe study being conducted by Dr Moyra Mortby at the Centre for Research on Ageing, Health and Wellbe-ing, ANU College of Medicine, Biology & Environment Research School of Population Health is still in its early stages and is recruiting participants. This study aims to improve understanding of how interactions between the carer and the care-recipient affect behavioural problems in dementia. A better understanding of these interactions will help develop programs which can be used to assist the carer and those suffering from dementia to minimise the negative impact of behaviours in dementia. This study is interested in the experiences of both the person living with dementia and the their carer.

BEHAVIOURAL SYMPTOMS OF DEMENTIA (BeSyDe) PROJECTA RESEARCH STUDY

Further InformationAm I eligible?

The project is looking for people who have been diagnosed with dementia and the person who is their primary carer to be a part of this research together. In particular, they are looking for;

• A primary carer - Who is a spouse/partner/child of the person living with dementia - Who spends 4 or more hours per day and 4 or more days a week caring for the person living with dementia - Who is knowledgeable about both the day-time and night-time behaviours of the person living with dementia - Who has good cognitive function themselves

• A person living with dementia - Who is above the age of 60 years - Who lives at home - Who has a formal diagnosis of dementia - Who presents with 2 or more behavioural problems (e.g. depression, anxiety, apathy, aggression) - Has no history of cancer, neurosurgery, or neurological conditions (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, stroke, epilepsy, tumours)?

BPSD RESOURCES FORCLINICIANS AND FAMILY CARERS

A variety of guides and support resources for clinicians and family carers have been developed by The BPSD Guide - Resource Development, Dissemination and Evaluation program. The Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service, the Department of Social Services and The Dementia Training Study Centres were the key partners of this innovative program.

The program commenced in 2011 with funding from the Commonwealth Government to develop the document Behaviour Management - A Guide to Good Practice: Managing Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). The document includes a comprehensive overview of BPSD management principles. The aim of the Guide is to provide guidance for clinicians in their role of assisting residential aged care facility staff, community care staff and family members caring for persons with dementia who present with BPSD.

Following the release of the Guide additional resources have been developed:• A Clinician’s Field Guide to Good Practice: Managing

Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia

• Guide for Family Carers: Dealing with Behaviours in People with Dementia

• BPSD Guide App for clinicians• BPSD in-service and evaluation training packages.

The BPSD App was developed to provide the same information and assistance as the Guide using new technologies which have the potential to make evidence based recommendations more accessible for use in

clinical practice. The App is currently available for download from both the App Store and Google Play.

For more information about these resources you can go online to Dementia Collaborative Research Centres website www.dementiaresearch.org.au/bpsdguide or phone the ACT Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service (DBMAS) on 1800 699 799

FUNDRAISING

We Won Again! Alzheimer’s Australia ACT won the Local Matters community giving program of Grill’d Burgers at Belconnen for the month of November.

Grill’d has created Local Matters with the aim of supporting unsung heroes in the community rather than the big groups who always get the limelight.

This was the second opportunity that Alzheimer’s Australia ACT has had the chance to be part of this program and also the second time we won the first prize of $300.

It is a great indication of how much support is out there in the community for Alzheimer’s Australia ACT and we send out a big ‘Thank you’ to everyone who voted for us.

Thank you also to Grill’d for making giving back to the local community part of their everyday business.

BUSY DAY AT BUNNINGSSAUSAGE SIZZLE FUNDRAISERThe dedicated fundraising team and staff sizzled a record number of sausages on Sunday, 14 December 2014. Business was very busy and at times it was not easy to keep up with the demand.

At the end of the day the 70kg of sausages recommended for the day by Bunnings was well and truly sold out and after costs, the BBQ raised a total of $1,700 - a fantastic result. Well done everyone!
