It been another top month for club members with great attendances. The coffee run to Ballina was a

little damp but had a big roll-up for an interesting morning amongst the ti-trees nevertheless. The car

park overflowed. It was inspiring to hear the story of dedication which Thursday plantation showed

taking their piece of swamp to a thriving business.

The run to Brushgrove joining up with the Coffs Harbour Club was fantastic. Jeff promised fine weather

and delivered in spades. Some superb cars were on display gleaming in the sunlight. They were

admired, discussed and had their stories told as we took the opportunity to get to know the folk from

Coffs and their cars. Lunch was very ample and although some had to wait a little because of the huge

crowd, the staff did a sterling job.

A big thank you to Jeff for his organisation and co-ordination with the southern club. Jeff and the

committee work tirelessly, making events so interesting for club members.

Saturday at Barlows of Ballina was another big turnout with several new members and their cars

present. Our appreciation goes to Geoff Jacobs from Barlows for his continued support. Thank you also

to Tim and Jeff Pettitt for the organisation of the day. Lex worked like a chef possessed from 8am. Sue,

with a few other members also worked their hearts out all day selling and serving. We certainly have

dedicated members who made a success of the day which will assist the driver training program.

Thank you one and all. David Besson

The 2017 annual Peugeot Pageant held at Merimbula was great fun, meeting up with old friends and enjoying at a variety of cars. The oldest was a 1947 Peugeot 202. It led the parade of cars through town to start the Pageant. There are a few older Peugeots around, either undergoing restoration or tucked away – certainly not doing road trips as this beauty does. Also, some of those early cars have been sold back to European buyers.

There was a good range of 203 and 403 models, together with a fair number of 404’s and 504’s. It’s strange to hear the public saying my Dad or Grandad had one of those, pointing out the earlier models. When these Peugeots were built in Australia they were about in large numbers as some of our members will attest. During the 70’s they were selling thousands annually.

There were motorkhana and driving skills events as well as the Concours. All were held at Pambula Historic Car Club grounds. There were timed competition events which broke a few cars (and brought drivers to tears) as well as those that involving some difficulty to perform but which got a few laughs - like the spoon and spark plug race.

A navigation run held on Sunday was quite difficult but the scenery and land forms of the Bega Valley were outstanding. We stopped for photos as much as for answers. Unlike our runs, the questions were in English – a bit disappointing. However Gayl, as navigator, claimed equal first. She does well at these types of events.

The Pambula Club has an enviable set up. It has been going for over 30 years and seems to work in very closely with the local council, drawing members from all over the region. The Mayor came to the Concours to judge the ‘best car’. They have shed spaces leased to members for car storage and an extensive workshop area for restoration work. The club has meeting rooms, a serious kitchen, bathrooms and a few acres of land. They even have a piano which they give a tickle when they are having parties. The dining room can hold about 100 people. They use it to take bus and group tours for morning tea or lunch and a tour of the facility to earn some extra income. The club is all run by volunteers and is a fantastic asset to the region.

We saw a few interesting projects while we were there. One was an electric Morris Minor and another was a Morris covered in green turf. Each to his own I suppose. There were some beautiful restorations as well as more ordinary cars with minor work done from when these were day to day runners. There was a fantastic little 1923 Citroen restored to the same specs as the one in which Bill Birtells did his first round Australia trip in the same year. Pretty special!

One of the treats for us was the presence of oyster farms nearby. Between those fat and creamy morsels, some local cheeses

and a drop of cool climate wine in a beautiful valley by the sea, talking cars, we had it made. All in all, a great weekend with

friends and toys. David Besson

RECENT EVENTS COFFEE RUN 12th

JULY 2017

The club members commenced our coffee run at Bunnings and proceeded through Caniaba, Casino and

onto Windara Nursery. It was a beautiful drive through the country with 18 club members attending the

coffee outing. Club members enjoyed the surrounds of the Nursery in lovely sunshine after a cool start to

the day.

Ray & Diana got caught up in traffic and took the long very scenic route to the Café but eventually turned

up and joined the group much to our relief.

It was again a great day with good company and companionship by members.
