NOTE FROM THE NEWSLETTER COMMITTEE.
During 1917 Singleton lost more young men than at any other time of war. Those known names have
been researched and others who were whispered to have a connection to Singleton were also followed
up. Due to space restrictions we have appropriately allocated more space to these heroes. It is always
an emotional time when reading articles of their farewells, war records, obituaries and memorials.
It is hope that the research will assist in compiling our Military History for future generations. The
men and women who put their hands up to do what they thought ought to be done should never be
forgotten. If you find someone missing please contact us.
FHSS PRESIDENTS’S REPORT 2017
With the help of a small group of individuals the Society has continued to give service to its members and visitors
from near and far.
There were many interesting stories espoused during the year and we have expanded our data base of information in
various areas thanks to many people. As previously expressed the internet is both a bonus and a concern as numbers
visiting have dropped since its explosion into our lives but I will re iterate that there is no better experience than going
to primary and local sources. Recently I have heard from some who previously sated their family history appetites on
the internet websites express that they have realised the limitations and the dangers of solely relying on the internet
resources so hope prevails.
Our Society once again opened its doors on ANZAC Day I thank Miriam Knight and George Standen for their time on
the day and we also participated in the Singleton Festival activities during 2016.
I know the Committee would wish me to personally thank John Tindale, Dot Clayworth and Robyn McKenzie whose
secretarial duties were ably filled by Pauline McLoughlin when Robyn departed the Singleton area during the year and
express appreciation for all their help to the organisation over the past year. It is a continued source of pleasure to hear
the expressions of gratitude and compliments to the organisation in the way our Duty Librarians assist those who visit
us in a friendly helpful way. We continue to receive positive comments on the Patrick Plains Gazette and I thank the
Newsletter Committee for their valiant efforts. To our Committee, Researchers and Duty Librarians where would we
be without you; you maintain us as an organisation?
I take the opportunity to wholeheartedly thank each and every one of you for your support to the Family History
Society Singleton Inc. and would encourage all members to do what they can for the Society.
Thank you

NELLIE MUST HAVE REALLY LOVED CLAUDE
For over thirty years Nellie M. Edwards aka Ellen Maude Edwards regularly placed memorials in the paper for her
finance’ Claude Stanley Prior who was killed in action on February 27th 1917 at Butte de Warlencourt in France.
Claude’s name can also be found as Clarence but he was registered Claude. The memorials can be found from 1918
until 1948 in the Singleton Argus with few years missed and there may be more in later years. Nellie was the daughter
of George Edwards [1859-1887] and Ellen Maude nee Kermode [1853-1935]. Nellie was born in the district in 1884
and her brother William in1887, her father died September the same year. Nellie’s mother married James Andrews
in1892 and added Arthur James 1893 and Elsie May 1897 to the family. The Kermode, Edwards and Andrews families
have long connections to the Greenlands and Goorangoola area. Sadly Nellie’s memorials remind us of the thousands
of women who just like Nellie were never to have their love return. Nellie never married and she died August 17th
1970 and is buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery next to her parents.
THE FIRST
‘Tis but one grave; but oh, have care,
For world-wide hopes lie buried there,
A sweet young life, which promised well,
Perhaps ’tis best, ah, who can tell?
We cannot, Lord, They purpose see;
But all is well that’s done by Thee;
And love in death should make us see
What love in life should always be.
There is one thing death cannot sever
Loving remembrance lasts forever.
Inserted by his Friend, Nellie M. Edwards

ANZAC Day was an appropriate occasion for the
presentation of Singleton born Michael
Wenham’s book ‘My Own Dear Laddie; In
Search of George Wenham, An Aboriginal Anzac
and a History of Denial. The book encapsulates
Michael’s topic for his PhD in History which he
received recently from the University of
Newcastle. Michael first graduated from the
University with BA Dip Ed. in 1971 and taught
Secondary students English and History until
2009. Michael’s sister Alison Howlett presented
the book on behalf of the Wenham Family. Along
with John and Richard; Michael and Alison are
the children of Charles Phillip Wenham [1920-
1963] and Elizabeth nee King [1919-2015].
The subject of the book was prompted by the life
and experiences of their grandfather George
Wenham who enlisted on the August 14th 1915
and served until he was officially discharged on
January 1st 1919. George married Englishwoman
Madeline Alice Sydney in Ilford, England on
October 15th 1918. George subsequently gained
official permission to accompany Madeline on
the ‘Osterley’ so they could travel to Australia
together. They settled in the Singleton area and
raised their children Marjorie, Sydney George,
Charles Phillip, Phyllis and Margaret. George
died in Randwick Military Hospital in 1928 as a
result of his gas damaged lungs. Madeline later
married Walter Kannar. So many like George
lived through the War only to die from the
horrible impacts of it when they returned home.
George’s and Madeline’s sons Sydney and
Charles served in WW11. Our thanks deserved.

A verse from the article reads
“There is but one retirement known,
Breast -wounded, prone we fall towards the foe;
We dice with Death, and if Death wins the throw
A Deathless lyre
Turns to the winds of history it strings
And evermore to all the world it sings
The question that Australia’s Army flings;
Who said retire?” *****

By Gosh! By Gee! By George!
An old Scottish Shepherd confided to his
Granddaughter that the secret to long life was to
sprinkle gunpowder on your porridge each
morning. This dictum she followed religiously until
she died at the venerable age of 108 leaving 7
children. 20 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren
and a 30 metre crater where the crematorium used
to be.

SENT TO CONVENTRY
This strange way of referring to social shunning has
two possible sources, both of which are connected
with soldiers.
According to one theory, the town of Coventry was
a stronghold of Cromwell’s supporters during the
English Civil War, and many royalist soldiers who
were captured in the Midlands were therefore sent
to Coventry for imprisonment. To be sent to
Coventry, then, was to be withdrawn very
effectively from circulation.
The other theory suggests that the people of
Coventry were traditional very unfriendly towards
all soldiers. Women were reproached if they so
much as talked to a soldier. Any soldier
unfortunate enough to be posted to a garrison in or
near Coventry could expect nothing but hostility
from the townspeople. Being sent to Coventry was
to be sentenced to a lonely life, away from the
usual support of a friendly social circle
