students had a great time. It’s events like these thatreally showed how great our member base is at helpingout. We had over 40 volunteers all pitching in to helppull this off. People were jumping onboard to helpout — new faces and familiar faces, it was fantastic. Itwas said that we had one of the best volunteer turnouts that anyone had seen in a long time! Thank youto everyone that helped make the event so great.

s 2014 nears an end, I’d like tothank all of the people that make thisclub so great. We have heard fromfolks that they would like to see moreevents and to that end, we will try toaccommodate that request. We do struggle in the winter months a little and tend to stick to indoor activities to avoid the weather (unless it’s in a safeparking lot). We are working to bring more varietywhile maintaining some of our more popular events, like our Putnam Park High Performance Driver’sSchool, so please plan to add that on your calendar!

After a long break, we finally we hosted a Tire RackStreet Survival event. This event goes right to our coremission — enhancing our driving pleasure while giving back to the community. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive and the

he BMW Hoosier Chapter held its 6th annualOhio River Drive event in October of this year.Members who love this event know it is thelongest, one day drive this chapter does. This is thetime of the year when trees show their beautifulcolors and temperatures are perfect for driving.Everyone seemed up to the challenge. The routeoffers the best winding roads in Southern Indianato test the agility of your BMW. The Overlookrestaurant in Leavenworth, IN, was the lunch destination this year. It was a great place to take a break from the rigors of the morning drive, inthat it allowed us to partake in some good foodwhile we all swapped stories of our morning adventures on the road. The IN-66 Ohio Riverdriving experience is very popular and as long asit stays that way we hope to do it again next year. This year’s drive had some of the best color I haveseen in years, and I am looking forward to meetingnew members and catching up with the regularson the 2015 Ohio River Drive.

left my big socket and torque wrench at home. Butoddly enough, I took a new bearing nut and dustcover — why I did that I can't tell you. Fortunately,BMW of Bowling Green was in attendance also. Theguys at the dealership took care of us! Justin Hedlund

let me borrow his 42mm socket, 3/4" to 1/2" adapter, and a 250ft-lb capacity torquewrench to do the job properly! Fantastic!

There were some other mechanical monsters floatingaround — like when you don't rev match your downshifts all day long. Well, it eventually takes its toll on the friction material on the clutch. But no harmbecause O-Reilly has a large distribution center inNashville, Tennessee (and it's only 1:15 away) thatwas open until midnight, and they had a clutch instock!

All in all we all had a great weekend and survived the first club event at NCM. Be sure to watch theBluegrass BMW's website for their date in May of2015 to have some fun at NCM Motorsports Park!

OFFICIAL BALLOT

few Hoosier BMW members made the trip toBowling Green, KY, to join our friends with the Bluegrass Chapter for the first club event at the NCM Motorsport Park on October 2 — 4. This track is 3.2miles long (when configured in Grand Course layout) and is fantastic! Friday began pretty gloomyas rain moved in, but it cleared up and the trackdried out for some great fun. Of course, the raincame back with a vengeance later in the day! Thenew pavement proved itself very tire friendly as all of our tires were smoothed out and looked like theywere new at the end of the day. The punishment thatPutnam Park does to your tires is magically erased atNCM. Too bad it does not add the tread back on tothem. Maybe they can work that part out!

So when you drive a car with 150,000 miles on it anddon’t know when thewheel bearings werechanged last, youmight want to justproactively replacethem. Around 4:00(central time — when everything wasalready closed) myleft front bearing decided to call it aday while I was flying around the track (luckily I felt something weirdand slowed down to a crawl). Fortunately, Zack Kettering, of ZackSpeed, was there. I called PelicanParts and had one (after some sweet talking)overnighted to the hotel, and Zack was able to getone overnighted to the track! While I was working onremoving the dead bearing, I heard a rattle of adiesel truck behind me — now since I told the trackworker where to send a Fed-Ex truck should one

show up — I wasvery hopeful to seeone when I turnedaround. I was inbusiness! Now thetool problem wasanother thing I hadto figure out Fridaynight. Figures, — I

the vehicle came from the assembly line or was upgradedafter it was delivered, Plus Sizing (also called “Inch-Up”sizing in other parts of the world) probably played a rolein its tire size choice. Plus Sizing allows tires and wheelsto make a fashion statement while providing a func-tional improvement.

Plus Sizing supports the premise that it’s important tomaintain the same overall tire diameter wheneverchanging tires and wheel sizes to ensure sufficientground clearance, appropriate driveline gearing and accurate speedometer readings. Large changes in overall tire diameter can alter the accuracy of thespeedometer as well as the effectiveness of anti-lockbraking system (ABS), traction control and vehicle stability system.

Using tires with shorter sidewalls also quickens steeringresponse and increases cornering stability. Combiningthem with larger diameter wheels makes it possible toproperly maintain the overall wheel and tire diameter, keeping odometer and speedometer changes negligible.

Plus Sizing’s biggest risks stem from accidental encounterswith potholes, curbs and debris on the road. Low profiletire sidewalls can be pinched more easily between theroad and the rim because shorter sidewalls cannot accommodate impact as well as taller sidewalls. Once avehicle has been Plus Sized, the driver has to try to goaround obstacles, rather than run over them.

Additionally, wide tires tend to float on loose surfacesand cannot process water as quickly as narrow tires. Thisreduces snow traction and hydroplaning resistancewhen driving on water-soaked highways.

hen it comes to upgrading a BMW’s or MINI’s performance, there are several areas you can tackle —horsepower, braking, lighting, styling, comfort, sound system, safety and more. For many enthusiasts, though, nothing brings out the best in a BMW or MINI and makesit more fun to drive than upgrading its handling. One ofthe easiest ways to upgrade handling…and looks…is to“plus size” the wheels and tires.

Seriously, if you want to really boost your BMW/MINI handling, consider “plus-sizing.” Using a wider size tire on the same wheel while maintaining the same overall diameter is known in the tire industry as “plus zero” sizing. Youcan also use a larger wheel withlower, wider tires which, in eithercase, puts more rubber on theroad (contact patch), giving the car better traction andimproved cosmetic appearance.

Here is a list of common plus zero sizes on two populargenerations of BMW 3 Series vehicles:

E36 (most 1992-1998 BMW 318i, 325i, 328i, 330i models):

• If you have factory 16” wheels with the Original Equipmentsize of 205/55R16, you can install 225/50R16 tires with noproblem. This is a very common upgrade and fits the wheelswell. The plus size maintains the correct overall diameterand load requirements. With this change, you’ll gain aboutan inch in tire width.

E46 (most 1999-2005 BMW 323i, 325i, 328i, 330i models):

• With the Original Equipment size of 205/55R16, you canuse the plus size of 225/50R16.

• Owners with the O.E. size of 225/45R17 you can plus sizeto either 235/40R17 or 235/45R17. With the 235/45R17 size,it's a fit in a vast majority of cases and typically only rubs on a lowered vehicle or a car with worn suspension components.

• For the Original Equipment size of 225/40R18, the plus sizeof 235/40R18 will work. This is also a case where the plus sizefits in the vast majority of cases and typically only rubs on alowered vehicle or a car with worn suspension components.

Large diameter wheels and wide, low profile tires go together and show up everywhere from America’s newcar showrooms to its roads, tracks and trails. So whether

n Saturday, October 18th, we held a TRSS at Brownsburg High School to help younger drivers learncar control skills and improve situational awareness inan attempt to lower vehicle fatality rates for the 16 —19year old age bracket. Indiana was ranked #1 in the countrylast year for teen death rates. To help get us off that list,we hosted 26 kids on a chilly Saturday morning.

The morning began with an emergency braking exercisethat served as a “wake-up” drill. The point was to show the drivers that the day will be fun as well as educational. In addition to a wet skid pad we had a slalom, emergency lane change, braking while turning, and a figure eight area. Each exercise had a specific purpose. We also taught students how to handle an abrupt lane change and how to feel the vehicle’s weight transfer and maintain its balance.

In addition to car control techniques, studentslearned some often overlooked basics like how to properly sit in the car seat. Also, skills that will better prepare them to feel a skid when it happens and properly react. We alsodeployed an air bag with a bottle of water on top of it to demonstrate the power

behind the charge. This demonstrated why you shouldnot cross your arm under the steering wheel or sit inthe passenger seat with your feet on the dash board.

This event would not have been possible without thehelp of over 40 volunteers, Brownsburg High School, and the Town of Brownsburg’s support! Fox 59’s JillianDeam was in attendance and shot some nice video that can be seen here:http://fox59.com/2014/10/19/teen-drivers-get-a-hands-on-lesson-in-safety/.

Figures, — I

students had a great time.
