1 Newsletter of the Southern Africa Province – September 2012, No 12 Our Lady of the Angels – Poor Claire Monastry, Lusaka Map of Africa made by Joseph Mulenga, Bobo-Dioulasso “The 2010 Chapter was very happy with the increase in vocations to the Society. It looked upon this as a sign of divine grace as well as a responsibility.” (CA pg 54) Our 69 candidates from the Southern Africa Province are surely not an exception in this joyful grace. This edition of the Motomoto Echo presents these candidates and their different levels of formation. I invite you to take note of the SAP Prayer for Vocations which has helped us to spiritually support these candidates. The 19 stagiaires in the SAP are yet another source of joy because through their pastoral experience this province is concretely making its contribution to that responsibility of formation. The increase in vocations also comes as an invitation to further improve our pre-formation selection. I would like to thank the four Sectors of the province for the great work which is going on in this ministry. Our October meeting in Mozambique will help us to find the best way to collaborate with Lechaptois Formation House, Balaka, and to address the question of limited space at the formation house. For now we can only ask the good Lord to guide those aspirants that we could not admit into our formation system this year. All initial and ongoing formation programs are called to incorporate integral formation, Justice Peace and Integrity of Creation; and Encounter and Dialogue. The launch of the 125 th Anniversary of the Anti-Slavery Campaign of Cardinal Lavigerie comes an opportune moment for everybody in formation to embrace this integration. Indeed all the confreres and candidates are invited within our communities and local churches, to restore freedom, honour and the sacred bonds of family (Lavigerie). I would like to congratulate all the confreres that were ordained priests this year in Zambia, DRC, Burkina Faso and India. Many congratulations also to our new confrere Deacons in Nairobi. Welcome to the Lavigerie family of brothers that want to liberate and empower the African world. In this edition you will also find a presentation of the new Provincial Council which will steer the SAP in the coming three years. Let us all collaborate with them for the glory of God. I wish you a relaxed and informed reading. Editorial Christopher Chileshe

“I am a man, and nothing human is foreign to me. I am a man, and injustice towards others revolts my heart. I am a man, and oppression offends my nature. I am a man and what I would like people to do is to restore to me, freedom, honour and the sacred bonds of family, I want to restore to the sons and daughters of this unhappy race, family, honour and freedom.”

(Lavigerie, Chiesa del Gesù, Rome, 23rd December 1888).

Dear sisters, dear brothers,

Greetings of joy and peace to all of you who form part of the Lavigerie family: The Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa, the Missionaries of Africa, and the associate members, novices, postulants, candidates, friends and benefactors of both Institutes. (…)

This year of celebration will be officially opened at the Church of Gesù in Rome on the 11th November 2012, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a missionary bishop much admired by Cardinal Lavigerie. The closing ceremony will be held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on the 8th September 2013. (…)

The 8th September is the feast of the Birth of Our Lady and also of the birth of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa in 1869. To celebrate a birth is to celebrate new life. We do not want this celebration to be just another commemoration with just a passing effect on our lives. For the Missionaries of Africa, the closing celebration will coincide with the 2013 Plenary Council that will take place in Ouagadougou. (…)

May this celebration be one of thanksgiving for the new life that was brought forth through Cardinal Lavigerie’s antislavery campaign! May this commemoration bring to birth new efforts to eradicate today’s forms of slavery! May the actions we take together with other likeminded people lead us to a world where the dignity of everyone is respected! May we hasten the day when God’s universal love for the Earth and for the whole Cosmos becomes a lived reality for everyone!

Congratulation to Claude Boucher for the publication of a life time research on gule wamkulu entitled “When Animals Sing and Spirits Dance” Available at Kungoni Centre of Culture and Art, Mua, Malawi at the cost of 50 $ US. Below: new gule wamkulu character presented at the Cultural Festival of Kungoni on 4th August to illustrate the Anti-slavery Campaign. Picture from William Turnbull.

When Animals Sing and Spirits Dance is an introduction to the diversity and drama that is the gule wamkulu, the “great dance”, of the Chewa people of Malawi. Covering 200 characters bedecked in mask and costume or woven structure, the book reveals not only the physical variety or the characters but also analyses their songs, dances and often codified messages that are delivered through word and action. The gule wamkulu was declared a masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005. This book is a worthy entrée to the majesty, spectacle and spirituality that is the great dance.

Greetings from CEBU, from the Philippines. May the new PC be blessed! Collaborate and be the source of inspiration for the SAP Province! You are our leaders; the three years represent a wide camp to exercise the vision and mission of the M.Afr and the SAP Prov. In Management we say: Leaders are inspirational and do transform! Inspirational Motivation: The foundation of transformational leadership is the promotion of consistent vision, mission, and a set of values to the members. Their vision is so compelling that they know what they want from every interaction. Transformational leaders guide followers by providing them with a sense of meaning and challenge. They work enthusiastically and optimistically to foster the spirit of teamwork and commitment! Good luck! John Itaru,M.Afr

Dear All, Two years and nine months after the tragic event the case is finally over. You will recall the actual murderer confessed and was sentenced to an effective 18 years. His four accomplices were found guilty in April on the lesser charge of culpable homicide (murder without the intention to kill), breaking and entry and in possession of a stolen gun. Yesterday (13th August) was sentencing and it took all day. I was called to the stand as a State witness and ask to speak about the life of Louis and the plans he had for Diepsloot.

Louis Blondel

I was asked if I forgive them and I explained that there is a time for forgiveness but this is not the time. Justice must come first. I also said that the family would first have to be consulted about forgiveness as it is there right to forgive or not to forgive. I did say that a lenient custodial sentence would be sufficient.

The Judge spoke glowingly about Louis and the work he did and the work he wanted to do precisely to help young men like the accused. He said the family were most generous in not taking Louis's money out of SA and for allowing the building of a Centre in Diepsloot in honour of Louis to go ahead.

The two who were 19 and 20 at the time of the murder received a 12 year sentence suspended for two years for culpable homicide, 6 years for breaking and entry and 3 for having a stolen gun; all sentences to run concurrently. The two who were 16 at the time of the murder received a 12 year sentence suspended for four years for culpable homicide, 6 years for breaking and entry and 3 for having a stolen gun; all sentences to run concurrently. They have already served 2 years and 9 months.

That brings the case to an end. Seán O’Leary

Pedro Perez passed away in Spain on the 14th August at the age of 83. Below is his brief life’s journey:

1955 Vicaire Murraça, Mozambique, 1956 Gorongoza, 1961 Charré, 1964 Chemba, Beira, 1964 Manga, 1971 Expulsion from Mozambique, 1972 CELA Lilongwe, Malawi, 1972 Salima, 1975 Likuni, 1978 Namitete, 1984 Nkhotakota, 1986 Nsipe, Dedza, 1991 Tsangano, Dedza, 1994 Nsipe, 1997 Nazaré Centre, Beira, Mozambique, 2000 Inhamizua.

On Saturday, 18 August 2012, three confreres from Kasama, Antoon Oostveen, Henk van der Steen and Paul Johnston, travelled from Kasama to Mbala to join the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary (SSHJM) as they celebrated 50 years of presence in Mbala.

The relationship between the Missionaries of Africa and the SSHJM started with Bishop Adolf Fürstenberg, M.Afr., who invited the sisters to come to take charge of the hospital in Mbala. They came and were instrumental in helping to develop the hospital. After a number of years, and, seeing the needs of the people around them, the sisters began to branch out to other areas. They became involved in the building of schools and the education of the deaf. They worked at developing social outreach programmes within the area that would involve the community and help the community to deal with their own problems. They run a centre for orphans and have opened up various community development programmes dealing with issues such as HIV/AIDS and other social aspects of the life of the people. They provide opportunities for deprived children to attend school. These programmes continue today and, through such programmes the sisters have touched the lives of a large number of people living in Mbala. Each of these programmes is community-based and the larger community is involved as a way of taking responsibility for their own lives and the lives of those within the community. Today, a number of sisters continue this tradition and continue to look at how they can continue to help the community to help themselves.

The SSHJM came to Mbala 50 years ago. The work they have carried out is a sign of inspiration to us all. As Missionaries of Africa, we should rejoice that we, through Bishop Fürstenberg, played a role in their presence in Mbala.

As the theme of the day, which is also the charism from their founder, stated: Only two things matter: Jesus Christ and the Poor. These are not just words, but a way of life for the SSHJM. 50 years ago, they started something wonderful and we pray that, with God’s blessing, they will continue for another 50 years or more to provide an example for all to see.
