Last Wednesday 11 November was Remembrance Day. On the 11th November, 1918 at 11am, the First World War came to an end. Much of the war had been fought in dug out trenches across Belgium and France. It is thought that about 9 million soldiers lost their lives and about 27 million were wounded - many of them permanently disabled.

On Remembrance Day ten Issoudun students were lucky enough to attend the Bentleigh RSL for a Remembrance Day Service. We were joined by students from McKinnon Secondary, St Paul’s Primary, Bentleigh Primary and McKinnon Primary.

The ceremony commenced with a speech from the Secretary of the Bentleigh RSL and was followed by the Laying of the Wreaths, where Serena and Cindy laid two wreaths on behalf of OLSH College. Hannah and Sophie recited ‘In Flanders Fields’ and ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’ during the service. All students were then invited to place a poppy at the cenotaph. It was a great opportunity to remember those who have serviced our country and have sacrificed so much.

Following the service we were then invited to a morning tea at the Bentleigh RSL along with others who had attended the service. We were given the opportunity to meet war veterans and their families. We had the chance to speak to a war veteran who had served in World War 2 when he was just 18 years old. Listening to the stories was a great way to become connected to Australia’s history and they were very moving.

We are very thankful to Ms Verna, our Humanities teacher, and the Bentleigh RSL for giving us this opportunity to attend this moving ceremony and meet new people.

VCE classes begin Monday 16 November for Year 12 2015 students

As assessment and examination periods pass for our senior students, the College is transitioning into the next phase of the school

year. For all students studying a Unit 3 & 4 subject in 2015, the KickStart program begins on Monday 16 November.

The classes will be rigorous in all aspects and it is important that you and your daughter note the following:

All teachers will be introducing work for the first outcome/s in each VCE subject, while providing a formal overview of all

work that will be undertaken in Semester 1.

In all subjects, students will be beginning tasks which will contribute to their VCE course requirements.

Attendance for this program is an expectation and will form part of the required attendance record for the VCE.

This time is critical for your daughter in her development of a strong determined approach to her senior studies; in terms of

preparation and readiness for successful VCE completion, this is a crucial part of the process. We would encourage all parents to

ensure that their daughters have an unblemished attendance record for the duration of these programs.

Our Celebration of Excellence Ceremony will be held in the College Hall at 9.30am on Thursday 19 November.

If your daughter is listed to receive an award you would have received an invitation in the mail. Please refer to this invitation

regarding any rehearsal requirements for your daughter.

All students are reminded that complete summer uniform including blazer is to be worn and homeroom will start at 9.00am. Students with PE or Dance on this day will be required to bring their PE uniform with them.

All parents are cordially invited to this important formal celebration of our students’ academic, sporting and community

achievements. Parents of awardees are especially encouraged to attend.

Please RSVP to the College Office on 8520 9200 or [email protected] by 4.00pm on Tuesday 17 November.

The following is a brief explanation of the process used to determine the award recipients for the Consistent Application to Studies, Academic Achievement and Academic Excellence Awards:

For Semester 2, an analysis of the student report data for the whole year (up until the end of October) is generated from the Accelerus reporting software which is used by the College. The top two students in each year level (according to proportion of excellent grades across the year) receive an Academic Excellence Award. The next group (approximately 6 – 7 students) receive an Academic Achievement Award. The Consistent Application to Studies award recipients are determined via an analysis of the Work Habits data, which are an indication of how well a student has applied herself to her work.

The students who achieve the academic awards typically achieve grades between B and A+. It would be rare for a student below the B/B+ range to receive an academic award. Students receiving Consistent Application to Studies achieve ‘Consistently’ or ‘Excellent’ in almost every work habit - this group of students includes the hard workers who do not necessarily get the best grades.

Students are not required at the College on this day.

Congratulations to the following Year 10 students on being elected to the Student Leadership team for 2016. We wish these students every blessing as they take on this role next year.

All Year 7, 8 and Issoudun students will begin the process for student leadership on Monday 16 November. We wish these girls well.

A reminder to all students that the Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 20 November. Attendance is compulsory and a medical certificate will be required if a student is absent on this day. Information and permission for this event was received via Caremonkey. I encourage all parents to ensure that their Caremonkey account has been created. This method will be the only way that the College will now use to inform parents of excursions and incursions. Thank you to all parents that have set up their account and for the positive feedback we have received.

All students are reminded that full school uniform including blazers will be required on the following days:
