Education in the OLSH Tradition: Faith-Filled, Reverence Relationships, Pursue Excellence, Touch the Hearts of Others

Dear Family and Friends of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College,

Last week we had the opportunity to officially launch our Issoudun year level. This of course is a new direction for the College as we offer a program to our students who are traditionally referred to as Year 9. From this 75th anniversary year and moving forward we will now have the Issoudun year level. Our students in this year level have already embarked on engaging pursuits in classroom learning including a revised delivery of subjects. The College is committed to this project. It is so strongly aligned to the desires of our Futures Direction, College Vision and Strategic Plan. It will take the College into a pathway that it has never before ventured. The newness of the project - it is like nothing that OLSH Bentleigh has ever imagined yet alone embarked upon – is the spark that could ignite a wave of optimism for our girls in their learning and in their lives.

Year 12 Retreat

Sr. Megan Donohue fdnsc Assistant Principal Faith and Mission

Faith and Mission

Our final retreat as a year level enabled us to relax, take risks, strengthen our connections with one another and create memories which we will hold forever.

Amanda Weerappah

Year 12 retreat was a wonderful experience that enabled our year level to connect with each other and reflect on our lives. It was a lovely way to begin the difficult year ahead, with words of wisdom from our teachers and peace in our hearts. We couldn't have asked for a better retreat.

Myths about Study Last week our Year 11 students were lucky to have Lily from Elevate Education present a session on study skills during one of their study periods. They found the session inspiring and motivating. Over the years I have attended many such sessions, and have compiled the following list of Myths - what is and is not effective ways to revise and study. Students have their own theories; so do teachers. Here are some hints for an effective study regime:

1. If you don’t have homework you have nothing to study. This is incorrect, even when you have no assignments; you should revise work each day and read ahead and around to prepare for the next topic.

2. Spending time at your desk in front of your books is study. No, not if you are only making lists, shuffling papers, sharpening pencils, gazing into space or otherwise getting ready.

3. You can study quite well in bed. This is not true. Your body is too relaxed to absorb anything well. 4. Everyone studies in the same way. Not true. Everyone has a different learning style. Find yours and use it! Some like to

see things, others to hear, others to draw etc. 5. The best way to study is to write out notes or highlight important sections. This is a very inefficient way of studying.

Success comes from comprehension, not memorisation. You have to understand ideas. This means building something new in your brain. The way to find out if you can ‘construct’ an idea is to re-create it in a different form, by explaining it aloud.

6. It’s better to study for long hours. No, it’s more efficient if you study for about 50 minutes, and then take a break for 5-10 minutes. If you’re spending too many hours studying, you probably need help to be more efficient.

7. Listening to music is good to help you study .This is not true for most people as they become distracted by a good tune or are unable to concentrate when the music is loud or discordant. Listening to Baroque music like Mozart often does improve learning.

8. Teachers know when you don’t understand something. No, they do not if you don’t tell them! Teachers can make ideas clearer, explain things in a different way, or help you with further suggestions IF YOU ASK.

9. You can prepare quite well for tests and exams by staying up to study the night before. This is a very bad practice. You will not have time to develop a clear understanding so very little of what you learn will be retained or really understood. Also you will be tired and not at your best for your test.

10. Being positive improves study outcomes. True! Say to yourself "I can remember this" and you will do much better

Year 7 Camp There’s no doubt that this experience provided all Year 7s with an opportunity to make new friends, to make connections with others, and to work together. It was a privilege to experience this time with the girls; what a talented group we certainly have! Our Year 7s should be proud of themselves for making the most of this opportunity, for pushing themselves, and for taking risks. Thank you to Ms Bullen (Year 7 Coordinator) and her team for providing this opportunity for the girls.

Student Leaders The Student Leaders and each year level are in the process of organising a number of activities for the College Community that will help to raise awareness and funds for Caritas and our overseas missions. All money raised by the students during this time will be divided between Caritas and Bakhita Village in South Africa. Both students and staff saw firsthand, when they visited last year, the challenges faced by the girls in South Africa who have been left orphaned.

Some of our Fundraising efforts for the Lenten Appeal

Hot Cross Buns Bakers Delight Bentleigh will be supplying the school with Hot Cross Buns. For every 6 pack ordered, $2.50 will be donated to our OLSH Family in Bakhita Village and Caritas. Please fill in the form attached to this email and return it to the school with the correct money. Orders close on Wednesday, 20 March and buns will be delivered to the College on Wednesday, 27 March.

Wearing the College Blazer Parents and students are reminded that when wearing the College jumper travelling to and from school that the College blazer must be worn at all times.

Issoudun

Who loves you baby? On Friday, 22 February, Liz North, OLSH school captain in 2000, and founder of The Self Centre, came in to talk to Issoudun girls about her inspiring story growing up with a physical disability, and how to build self-confidence. Her story about dealing with spina bifida throughout her life was extremely captivating and taught us that everyone goes through the same struggles, however that doesn’t make anyone less different than yourself. Some of her tips on how to build your self-esteem included stop comparing yourself to others, have fun, forget about the past and look into the future, and never lose faith in yourself. She was easy to relate to as she, herself, was a student at OLSH, and she is a true example that OLSH girls can do anything!

Staff Professional Learning at OLSH

The Wednesday afternoon Professional Learning sessions at OLSH have enabled staff to:

• be briefed on students with particular needs; • develop skills in eLearning, such as using Windows 8; • learn about the latest numeracy program in the College 'Getting Ready in Numeracy' (GRIN); • work in Faculty groups on a variety of course planning and development of tasks, and • continue to develop curriculum for the Issoudun program, both at Bentleigh and for the Hartzer

Residential experience. Many staff have also had the opportunity to attend external professional learning sessions, including: Physics Conference - attended by Suzy Pask & Phil Carmody on 15 February It was vital to attend the annual Physics conference at Monash Clayton as this year there is no mid-year exam, and only one end of year exam being assessed at Year 12. One of the main agenda items was the National Curriculum and the areas of Physics which are vital when preparing students for university. The keynote address was given by Professor Stuart Wyith from Melbourne University. He spoke about ‘The First Galaxies’. His initial love of astrophysics stemmed from his secondary school Physics classes. Prof Wyith spoke with passion about the expanding universe, galaxies, visits to international telescopes and he shared many beautiful images of our universe created from individual data recordings. OLSH Year 11 Physics students are exploring Astrophysics currently in their classwork, recently learning that we are all children of 'star dust'. VATE VCE English Conference - attended by Kristie Bertschik on 18 February One session was on the text ‘Brooklyn’, which the Year 12s will be studying next term. This presentation offered new insights into the text that had not considered in initial musings. It will be valuable sharing this different perspective with the students and to provide them with the opportunity to ruminate over the various readings of the text in order to come to their own understanding. VOTES ATIP Documentation Forum - attended by Robyn Rayment and Carolyn Graffeo on 18 February The VET activities were focussed on reviewing documentation procedures, submission timelines for both February and November and arrangements for support visits. Any changes to training packages, delivery, procedure or documentation was highlighted and discussed. It was also an opportunity to catch up with the OLSH VOTES support person and arrange the first visit and discuss the documentation required.

Science News

In Year 8 Science this term we are learning about scientific data and research methods. 8 Blue conducted an experiment called Elephant Toothpaste, which we all really enjoyed. We mixed hydrogen peroxide with iodide, dish washing soap and multiple food colourings in a glass which created a chemical reaction. It exploded into the air, forming a colourful foam-like toothpaste shape. The foam-bubbles are created when the hydrogen peroxide is mixed with the dish soap allowing bubbles to form. It was very exciting – an enjoyable way to learn about how to conduct an experiment safely in the Science Lab. Thanks again to Mrs Newbold, our wonderful lab manager. Celeste Caltabiano 8 Blue

MUSIC DANCE DRAMA

VCE DRAMA WORKSHOP Our VCE Drama students attended a fabulous workshop last week to assist them in the development of their ensemble performances, a major assessment task in their Unit 1 Drama studies. The girls joined the Education Ensemble Team at The Malthouse for a day of exploring non-naturalism and how it can be manipulated to create group devised drama. This valuable workshop focussed on theatrical conventions and dramatic elements, allowing students to observe, direct and finally create an ensemble performance. Our girls participated with great enthusiasm and commitment; and they are already devising their own ensembles, using techniques that were learnt at the workshop. ‘Loud at Lunchtime’ Concert Talented singer/songwriter Natasha Duarte will be performing at the College at lunchtime on Tuesday, 12 March. We are delighted to give our girls the opportunity to see an up and coming young performer. “Apart from her extraordinary talent as a singer and the depth of her songwriting, what impresses me most about Natasha is her unbridled enthusiasm when it comes to performing. Natasha wins her audiences over every time. Her motivation and love of music is infectious. I am looking forward to helping give her the chance to be heard and expand her ever-growing audiences further. I believe that Natasha has something very special and the ability and talent to sustain a very long and successful career.” Glenn Wheatley, Manager

Drum Demonstration Our talented Percussion teacher, Mr Magesh Magesh, will be performing in the College Hall on Monday, 18 March at lunchtime. Again, this as another wonderful opportunity for our girls to experience a professional performer in action.
