APRIL 2012
Dear Crestwood Families,
Our parent night for children entering kindergarten in the fall will be on Thursday, April 12th at 6:00, in our cafeteria.
The evening will begin with a presentation from our kindergarten teachers, as well as the school nurse. The PTO will
again invite parents to join and participate in our school community. Parents will have the opportunity to complete un-
finished paperwork, as well as tour the building.
We hope you can join us on Friday, April 27th for our 8th annual Earth Day celebration hosted by the Outdoor Educa-
tion Committee. This wonderful afterschool event has many activities for the families. The PTO will be assisting and
volunteering at the various stations set up on the primary and intermediate campus. Please see the attached flyer to sign
up for this event.

On Monday, March 5th Right to Read Week was kicked off by 3 special visitors, The Cat
in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2. They went to each classroom and gave the students
Dr. Seuss bookmarks. The students also received Dr. Seuss reading stickers. Each
teacher chose a Dr. Seuss book and decorated the classroom doors. The students had
a great time touring the building and looking at all the door decorations.
The “reading bubble” was set up in the cafeteria. Classes were able to go to the bubble
for either silent reading or to be read to by their teacher. There were baskets of Dr.
Seuss books for the students to enjoy. Our kindergarten students helped with the morn-
ing announcements by reading our Dr. Seuss book quotes and facts. Each class submit-
ted an answer for the book quote. A name was drawn each day and the “winning” class
received either Dr. Seuss pencils or pencil top erasers.
We were privileged to have over 60 guest readers
visit our school this week and read to the classes.
Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, community
members, retired teachers, and staff members
were among the readers. We are very apprecia-
tive of all the guest readers.

The preschool enrichment program is going very well. We have had 5 sessions and have covered these areas of math: patterns, measurement, shapes such as cylinders and cones and numbers beyond 10. We will be finishing up with graphs and money lessons in the next few weeks. Mrs. Marlow hopes to continue the enrichment program next year for
the four year old group.

Kindergarten students are working on beginning sounds, letters, sight
words and beginning to read!
They are writing and working on spaces and writing the letters correct-ly. The math topics have been measurement, capacity and graphing. They have learned about needs and wants in Social Studies as well.
Earth Science was the topic for this month in Science.
The first graders have been working on creating various art projects for the sensory bubble
of “Antarctica and Northeast Ohio.” Students are using the ipads as an intervention piece in
both math and reading skills. In social studies, the “Flat Stanley’s” are arriving from all over
the United States! Students are having a lot of fun learning about maps and states. Stu-
dents will be reading non-fiction books about animals and writing research papers.

The second graders are busy learning about the Earth and Space. They have been observ-ing and filling out a moon journal at home for the last 16 days to record the changes. The unit will be completed by learning about the constellations. In math the second graders have been working on measurement both metric and standard units of measure for length and capacity. All second grade students have just completed two weeks of the Iowa and
CogAT tests.

Crestwood Primary School had over 200 people visit our Science and Technology Night on Tuesday, March 20th. The night was a collaborative project between Hiram College students and Crestwood Primary Teachers. Each teacher created an interactive activity using ipads, Mobi’s, Animoto, and Smartboards to showcase our use of technology to teach math and science. Mrs. Calapa and Ms. Viers built a giant science bubble called: Antarctic/Northeast Ohio Science Sensory Bubble which was a comparison of the two habitats. Each second grader researched an animal and created a model to display in the sensory bubble. Dr. Lee, the professor from Miami University, presented with Natalie Harr about the culmination of the Antarctica Adventure. Professor Roxanne Sorrick was instrumental in making this evening a success.

Our Brownie Troop 732 also collected 600 pounds of food, clothing and toiletries for Safer Futures. Thank you for all the support!!

Spring is here and that always brings “SPRING FEVER!” We have more
playground accidents, insects, and allergies! Here are some helpful tips to help your
child:
1. Make sure your child has sturdy shoes to wear on the playground each day. Gym
shoes and sandals with a back are the best. Leave flip-flops, slip-on sandals, and
heels for weekend activities.
2. Even though it may seem warm, make sure your child brings a light jacket or
sweatshirt to school each day. Temperatures can change during the day.
3. If your child has a bee sting allergy, make sure we have emergency medication at
school. Medication forms are available on the school website.
4. If your child takes seasonal allergy medication, give it every day even if there are
no allergy symptoms. The medication helps control the symptoms, but not the
actual allergy.
5. Tell your child to stay away from berries and mushrooms that are on bushes or in
the grass. These can be harmful if ingested.
We always can use lightly used sweatpants and gym shorts in the clinic. Please think
of us when getting rid of outgrown clothing.
Thanks your support of school health.

RIGHT TO READ WEEK
In second grade, students in Mrs. Grebb’s class have been learning about measuring. They have used
rulers, meter sticks, yardsticks and containers to determine capacity and length of objects. Mrs.
McCoy brought in her glass container collection. We learned how milk used to be delivered to houses
in glass jars. Mrs. McCoy even had a glass jar called a “Jill”. We then had fun exploring and discover-
ing how many cups are in a pint, how many pints are in a quart, how many quarts are in a gallon, and
we found out how much a “Jill” holds!
Mrs. Marlow’s morning preschool class read
Hop on Pop and then practiced their hopping
skills by hopping on the pops.
Pictured above is Memphis English from Mrs.
Marlow’s afternoon preschool class. They read
The Foot Book, took pictures of their feet and
covered them, & then tried to guess whose feet
were whose!
