DIARY DATES

Friday 26.6.2020 Last day of Term 2. Monday 13.7.2020 First day of Term 3.

On behalf of the Emerson School Council, staff, past and present students and the wider community, I would like to congratulate our Principal, Mr John Mooney, who was recently awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Since becoming Principal of Emerson School in 1998, Mr Mooney and all the staff have encouraged our children to become all they can be and more – often surprising themselves in what they can achieve and learn during their years at Emerson. Mr Mooney and the staff unite to make learning fun and believe that every child deserves a curriculum that challenges them to give things a try, help each other and enjoy a brighter future. Our children enjoy coming to school and, with the staff, have shown remarkable resilience over the past few months, adapting to remote learning the Emerson way during COVID-19 restrictions. The school curriculum has grown markedly over the last few years with the introduction of the VCAL program. Mr Mooney has been at the forefront ensuring that our graduate students have the opportunity to gain their Learner’s Permit, participate in apprenticeships and continue their education through enrolment at TAFE.

Mr Mooney continually strives for our children to be the best they can be. He encourages and supports staff and is always available to all the families of Emerson students. As they say, “…. It takes a village to raise a child …”, and Emerson School is an amazing village. We are optimistic, under Mr Mooney’s guidance, students and staff will achieve the long awaited upgrade to the Heatherton Road Junior/Senior Campus. I am sure great things will continue to unfold at Emerson School. Mr Mooney is a quiet achiever and, after 50 years’ service to the Department of Education and Training in Victoria, this OAM award is well deserved and something not only Mr Mooney, but the whole school community, should be very proud of. Well done Mr Mooney. HEATHER NORMAN

We will be studying the value, Steadfastness, for the next fortnight. Steadfast people are purposeful in their actions. They stick to something regardless of any obstacles that may get in their way. Mr Mooney is a very good example of someone who demonstrates steadfastness. Mr Mooney has lobbied the Education Department for many years to provide the Emerson students and staff with better facilities in which to learn. Due to his steadfastness and determination, we obtained the old Greenslopes school site in 2010. He then spent the next few years planning and financing a complete overhaul and rebuild. I remember the excitement of the Middle School students and staff when they first stepped foot into their brand-new classrooms. They were mesmerized by their amazing surroundings. It is still a first-class educational setting today. However, Mr Mooney is still not finished. He is currently on a journey to build an even better facility on our Heatherton Road site. It has been a long and sometimes frustrating period, but Mr Mooney will never give up fighting for better conditions for our students and staff because he knows they deserve only the best. Mr Mooney was recognized for all his hard work this week when he received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours’ List for service to education and to professional organisations. It was well deserved and we are all very proud of him and grateful for his limitless passion and hard work. Many Emersonians, both past and present, have benefitted from Mr Mooney’s steadfastness over the past 22 years. We all wish him our heartiest congratulations as we look forward to his next project. Introducing JSK

Junior School is excited to announce that our new class JSK is now up and running. Mr Nathan Dennis has been busy setting up the classroom and developing the JSK program. Nathan has been an ES staff member at Emerson School for 7 years. He has recently completed his Bachelor of Education (Primary) and we feel very lucky that he chose Emerson School as his first classroom teaching position. Presently, there are 4 students in JSK – Anthony, Eh-Nay, Thomas and Yunus. We look forward to welcoming new students as the year progresses. As you can see from the photos below, they have all settled into their new classroom beautifully and are enjoying working with their new teacher and specialist staff.
