Member Highlights

Nancy Kelley

Nancy was born to Bill and Louise Heinz-erling in Miller SD the youngest of four sib-lings. She attended grade school in a one room schoolhouse and graduated from Miller High School. She went to Northern State Teachers College for two years, got her two-year certificate and began teaching school in Rapid City. She married Warren Fanger in Miller.

The couple moved to Mitchell where she continued her education and received her BA from Dakota Wesleyan. Later on she returned to Northern State University for graduate work for her Reading Spe-cialist Endorsement. Nancy and Warren had two daughters. Joanie (Allan) Aman lives in St. Michael, Minnesota. She is a registered nurse and a case manager for Medico Insurance Company. Joanie and Allan have two children, Alex who is in college and Shelby who is 14. The youngest daughter is Lana Fanger who lives in Minneapolis and is a project manager for various corporations. One cherished memory is when Nancy and Lana went to San Antonio to witness Joanie’s nursing graduation ceremony. After moving to Huron, Nancy taught in various area schools, finding the winter commuting challenging. Among others, she taught in Iroquois School and also at a Colony School near Tulare. She recently wrote a Reminiscent Teacher Essay for the SD Retired Teachers’ Association highlighting her teaching years. She has lived in or near Huron for forty three years. Being raised in a country church near Miller, Nancy began sing-ing duets with her mother when she was ten years old and has been singing ever since. Wherever she has lived she has been with a community chorus or church choir. She is also fond of playing the piano. Nancy is a twenty-five year cancer survivor. As all her siblings and two of their spouses have passed away from cancer, she is es-pecially close to her nieces and nephews. She oftentimes travels to Rapid City to visit them. She also enjoys going to Minneapolis to visit her family, relishing time with her grandchildren. Being in our church choir, belonging to the Retired Teachers As-sociation, writing and reading are all interests of Nancy’s. She also enjoys attending Bible study. She has also agreed to be on the committee for funerals in First Church.

Pastor’s Pen

Want to go deeper in the Christian life?

Psalm 42:7 says, “Deep calls to deep,”

yet superficiality is one curse of our age.

Do you desire that your life be deepened

by the life of God transforming yours?

Growth in the spiritual life is grace. That

is, we cannot simply “try harder” and ex-

pect to become more Christ-like, Spirit-

filled, or God-glorifying. In fact, to do so

would be an example of works-righteousness! We are given new birth

by God’s grace and we are nourished in this new life not by works,

but by God’s grace. Paul says, “…those who receive the abundance of

grace and the free gift of righteousness shall reign in life through the

one man Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17). So does that mean we must

simply sit on our hands and wait for God to come and transform us?

No. We are called neither to depend on human works nor to sit idle!

God has given us “spiritual disciplines” as a means of opening our

lives to transforming grace.

The Apostle Paul writes, “If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap

corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap

eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is

right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up” (Galatians

6:8-9). Notice the metaphor Paul uses! The spiritual life is a lot like

farming or gardening! For instance, a farmer cannot make the crop

grow, but that doesn’t mean he does nothing. On the contrary, a

farmer does all he can to provide the right conditions for normal

growth. He ploughs the ground and plants the seed. He waters the

plants and removes competition. And then up comes the crop! So it is

in our lives. God has given us “spiritual disciplines” like prayer, fast-

ing, scripture-reading, service, worship, and celebration that open our

lives to his grace that we might grow deep. Over the next few months

we’ll be exploring these disciplines in the Pastor’s Pen and I pray

you’ll join me in seeking God’s transforming grace.

Grace & peace,

Pastor Andrew

e·van·ge·lism [ih-van-juh-liz-uhm]

noun

1. the preaching or promulgation of the gospel; the work of an evangelist.

2. missionary zeal, purpose, or activity.

LifeLight Communications, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Evangelistic Procla-

mation Organization. We view ourselves as missionaries, and base our work

from Acts 1:8, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon

you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria,

and to the end of the earth.” We exist to proclaim the Gospel through music

and the message.

LifeLight’s founding principle is to offer all festivals FREE of admission so that

ALL may come and ALL may hear the Gospel message. The LifeLight South

Dakota Festival, while the most visible area, is one of three areas of Life-

Light’s ministry: Festivals, Missions and Outreach. Yet LifeLight is ONE minis-

try with ONE mission, “Taking the Church outside the walls, bringing

Light into the darkness with the life-changing message of the Gospel of

Jesus Christ.”

In everything we do, we must answer one question, “How is the Gospel

going to be presented?” This is our common denominator, plain and simple.
