    NEWSLETTER: September 2015October 2015

    The EMK Center continues to brings a series of events that are entertaining, motivational,

    informative, and beneficial to our patrons and members. This month, we saw a widely covered

    calligraphy training, followed by an exhibition, successful closure and launch of two of our grant

    funded projects, and also renewed participation in EducationUSA activities as Spring deadlineapproaches for admissions. Next month, we shall cross another milestone when we inaugurate the

    EMK MakerLab, a state of the art creative hi-tech laboratory catering to the young creative

    minds. Tentatively scheduled to be inaugurated on the7th of November, the lab is a model that will

    give a boost the young tech community and we do hope that this model will be replicated in

    educational institutions, research facilities, in the creative audio-visual community, and in the private

    sector.

    Tasleema Alam is an artist, designer, and educator who is known for her dynamic experimental work

    in Islamic and Oriental art, with a special interest in illumination. A week long exhibition wasorganized by the EMK Center with a selection her works on Islamic art works displaying localmaterials and artisanship showcasing Islamic geometry, illumination and Islamic calligraphy. Theexhibition was open for all from September 9 through September 22, 2015. She also conducted athree-day workshop titled Patterns of Alhambra at EMK Center from September 15 to September17, 2015.

    It's Humanity Foundation held aworkshop at EMK Center on September19, 2015. The foundation works for thedevelopment of leadership, socialchange and volunteerism. Motivationalspeaker Mr. G. Sumdany Don presentedthe keynote at the workshop. He briefedthe participants and encouraged themfor a social change, through leadershipand volunteerism. A total of 65participants took part at the program.

    EMK Happy Hour: A Journey of Beats

    EMK Happy Hour featured talented Tabla player Mir Naqibul Islam on September 19, 2015 at theCenter. He is a regular performer in the classical music arena of Bangladesh, both as a soloist and anaccompanist. Though trained in purely traditional style, he is open minded to work in any genre ofmusic and love to incorporate those flavors in his playing. Currently he is a music teacher atChhayanaut Sangeet Vidyatan with an equally active freelancing career. He was accompanied byTamnia Islam on Harmonium and Asit Biswas on Eshraj. A total of 130 participants were present atthe program.

    A two-day IELTS workshop took place at the center on September 29 and 30, 2015. The sessionincluded general discussion on the four IELTS topics and troubleshooting problematic criteria. Theinstructor provided students some helpful tips for taking exam. The workshop also engaged thestudents in group discussions, debates and brainstorming. Finally, he took feedback from the studentand worked out a few mock tests. A total of 37 participants took part in the workshop.

    Skype Video Conference: Marywood University

    Senior Director of University Admissionsat Marywood University joined EMKCenters EducationUSA students in aSkype conference on September 22,2015. He presented the university

    searching process and answeredadmission related queries from thestudents. A total of 25 participants tookpart in the program.

    IELTS Workshop

    Press Conference: Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for

    South Asia

    Assistant U.S. Trade Representative(USTR) for South Asia Michael J.Delaney held a press conference forBangladeshi media presenting the GSPAction Plan for Bangladesh onSeptember 23, 2015. The USTR isresponsible for development of tradewith the countries comprising SouthAsia. He discussed U.S. governmentsinterest to work with Bangladesh torealize its full potential. A total of 80participants took attended the program.

    Global Shapers is a group of young

    individuals, aims to bring positive changes

    in community and foster social inclusion.

    The Dhaka Hub arranged a program at theEMK Center for theirProject Odommo at

    the center on October 3, 2015. The project

    aims to reduce the social exclusion that

    disabled individuals face from schools,

    workplace and communities. A total of 23

    participants took part in the program.

    An inauguration program for the new committee of

    Volunteer for Bangladesh (VBD) was arranged at the EMK

    Center on October 1, 2015. The program included talks by

    VBD founder

    Korvi Rakshand and other team members, certificate giving

    ceremony to the old board and welcoming ceremony for thenew committee members. A total of 40 participants took

    part in the session.

    The second workshop of Lab 2 Market was organized at the EMK Center on September 29, 2015. Lab 2Market is an incubating initiative to assist researchers, technologists and innovators to take theirproducts to the right consumers.

    The workshop covered business evaluation and market assessment for new innovations. The speakerof the event was Solaiman Shukhon, Head of Business, Aamra Smart Solutions. A total of 32

    participants took part in the workshop. The Lab 2 Market series has been funded through a grant oftheEMK Center.

    Launching of Pujee

    Light Castle Partners launched, Pujee a social platform fund raising for the early stage businessventures at EMK Center on October 3, 2015. The project is an EMK Small Grant 2015 fundedprogram. The event entailed connection between interpreters and startup speakers spoke aboutprocess of effective fund raising and the Pujee platform was discussed in details. A total of 75participants took part in the program.

    As a continuous process of several workshops onresearch commercialization under the Lab 2 Marketprogram, a workshop was held at EMK Center onOctober 8, 2015.The subject matter of the workshop was intellectualproperty and licensing of product. which participantshad invested or created and ready forcommercialization. The workshop informed theparticipants with the legal procedures ofcommercialization of a product. A total of 26participants took part in the program.

    EducationUSA organized aSouth Asia Fall Tour at EMK Center on October 6, 2015. Representativesfrom 13 U.S. colleges and universities were present at the program. They shared valuableinformation on programs to study, the application process, scholarship opportunities, and campuslife. The participating universities were Baker University, California State University, East Bay,Colorado State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Grand Valley State University, MurrayState University, Old Dominion University, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Savannah College of Artand Design, St. Ambrose University, University of Bridgeport, Valparaiso University and WichitaState University. A total of 280 participants attended the program.

    EducationUSA South Asia Fall Tour

    On the heels of an academic conferenceon prosecuting Transnational OrganizedCrime, U.S. Department of JusticeResident Legal Advisers Jack Lammers

    and Terry Kinney held a session onmoney laundering with the top lawstudents of Daffodil InternationalUniversity at the EMK Center. A total of14 participants were present at thesession held on October 15. 2015.

    U.S. Department Of Justice held a session on

    LinkUp is a Gender Equality, HIV, andYouth Leadership network. LinkUporganized a meeting of youths at EMKCenter advocating their projects atEMK Center on October 14, 2015. Atotal of 10 participants took part inthe program held at EMK spaceKotha.

    English Speaking Club, a regular program to practice English language was held at EMK Center onthe dates September 21 and October 05, 2015. The Club is a group of students and professionals,who are willing to improve their English. The club regularly holds speaking session for the Englishspeaking skill development of its members. The sessions include introduction speeches from thenew members, vocabulary practice session and other interactive English language skill developmentsegments.

    University of Nevada: Student Activities to Build Life

    Experience

    Kawsar Khan, a representative from theUniversity of Nevada visited EMK Centerand delivered a presentation for students

    on October 14, 2015. His presentationincluded university experience at USUniversities from a number ofperspectives. A total of 27 participantstook part in the program held at the EMKspace Golpo.

    Youth School for Social Entrepreneur

    The Youth School for Social Entrepreneur

    announced their plans for holding differentevents at EMK Center on October 12, 2015.The youth based non-profit organization isworking on the development of skill andpotential of Bangladeshi youths. A total of 65participants took part in the program at theEMK space Adda.

    EducationUSA organized a MOOC session on a course from University of Berkley and facilitateddiscussion in the classroom at EMK Center on September 19, October 3, 10 and 17, 2015.

    MOOC Class: Academic Writing

    Activity A at the EMK Center welcomes all studentswho are interested in pursuing their higher education tothe United States. The program is held regularly twice aweek at the Center conducted by EducationUSA advisorSausan Rahmatullah. Activity A informs students how toapply to US universities. The presenter gave a specialtalk on Scholarships. She talked about how to writepersonal statements, how to prepare bank statements,and transcripts. At least 10-20 students took part indifferent programs through the dates September 15,20, 29, and October 04, 11 and 13, 2015.

    EducationUSA

    EducationUSA at the EMK Center welcomes all students who are interested in pursuing their highereducation to the United States. Supported by the U.S. Department of State, EducationUSA guidesstudents through a 5 step program, leading to acceptance in an American university/college. ActivityA and Activity B are held regularly at the center, conducted by our Resident Student Adviser, and onevery Thursday an English Speaking Club session also takes place. Schedules are published regularlyon our Facebook page.
