Last Newsletter we looked at how Emergenetics can be used to improve customer service, drive sales performance and improve partnership working between organisations. This month we are focussing on that increasingly key word in the world of work: COLLABORATION.

Practical Applications

Collaboration is imperative for better teamwork and a more productive workplace. That much is obvious, but it’s what goes into collaboration that makes the difference between teams who simply get along and teams who perform at a higher level.

The essence of collaboration is an activation of differences, ideas, expertise and perspectives. What we would call a Whole Emergenetics Team. Teamwork in today’s more networked workplace means harnessing differences in a new way, because highly diverse workforces are the new norm. We can all do the following to be more effective collaborators:

1. Be Self-Aware Know how you’re coming

across to those with whom you’re

collaborating. For example if you are a

Conceptual thinker, do you tend to put forth

your big ideas? Harness that, but think

through what other aspects your team may

need to know, like the reasoning behind

your idea (for Analytical thinkers) or whose

help you’ll need to get it done (Structural

thinkers).

2. Be Open Don’t assume that just because you can do something yourself, you should. Think through how others (with different thinking and behavioural preferences) can help you get things done more efficiently.

3. Actions Speak Louder Than Words If you make a commitment, keep it. Trust is absolutely critical to building teamwork skills, but when you’re working with a diverse team, actively seek out how people define a high trust environment. There are also important considerations for L&D Leaders and Trainers in relation to collaboration. As the driving force behind building better teamwork skills and creating stronger organizations, you can:

A. Drive Collaboration in New Ways Traditional classroom training is just the start, but are you re-enforcing the learning via on-demand channels like social, mobile and e-learning? We are about to announce some fascinating new support in this area from Emergenetics, but you can start doing it anyway through the channels available to you.

B. Make Collaboration a Competency You may already have this in place, but have you made the clear connection into tangible, goal-oriented and business objective driven elements that allow employees to see collaboration as a core part of their job?

C. Know Your Employee Base Do you know how Emergenetics-diverse your employees are? Do you have clear ways to ensure employees can really understand where each member of their team are coming from?

Improved Partner Working

If you would like to find out more about supporting collaboration in your team or organisation, please contact Micheline [email protected] Please also let Micheline know if you have other applications for Emergenetics in the workplace, that we could share in

Here is an opportunity to practice your profile interpretation skills and refresh your Emergenetics learning in the process …. Have a look at the profile below and see if you can answer the following questions:

How best might you communicate with this person?

What phrases might connect with this person?

How Expressive should you be when talking to them?

What might they be like as a leader?

Are they likely to be the world’s best organiser of dinner parties?

In this “analytical” section of the newsletter, we provide a short selection of interesting books and articles that inform our knowledge of neuroscience, leadership and team performance. Or simply stretch our thinking! Please let us know if you have discovered any books/articles that we can share within the Emergenetics community.

Books & Articles

After a summer of great sport, we had to include one book

about sport in our review section. Try this one, for a

contrarian view of what makes a great sports person and

another spin on the nature and nurture debate. When

reading it, think about some of the stars of summer – on the

Tour, in the Open, at Glasgow.

The Sports Gene by David Epstein.

Nothing Edited by Jeremy Web.

There is some brain science in here, and whilst the title of this book will appeal to conceptual thinkers, it’s content will be of interest to all.

It is a compilation of articles and contributions from New

Scientist writers on different aspects of nothing. So it is

indeed a book about …. Nothing!

We think Malcolm Gladwell is always good value, and some would argue this is his best yet. As usual, lots of interesting analysis, stories and perspectives, but also a neat little motivator that helps us understand and believe how to take on the big guys. A great holiday book – digestible in one long flight or pool-side session.

David and Goliath

by Malcolm Gladwell.

Paranoia at Work by Naomi Shragai. This article (click here to read it), recently spotted in the FT, is very good, particularly in the way that it touches on many aspects of David Rock’s SCARF model relating to the social brain.

Please let Lucienne know of any great books, magazines or articles you discovered via [email protected], so we can pass them on in future

newsletters

Product News

EMERGENETICS SELECTION PROGRAMME (ESP) Emergenetics Selection Programme (ESP) is a product within the Emergenetics portfolio, specifically designed to assess motivations and aptitudes in a recruitment or assessment centre situation. ESP is based on the same science as Emergenetics Profiles, plus extensive data on key aptitudes and motivations that are relevant considerations when hiring. We publicly launched ESP to the UK market at the recent CIPD Recruitment Conference and had a great response. Candidate assessments can be managed by our UK team (and ESP trained associates) or directly by you, once you have undertaken the one-day training required. The next ESP Training is on 25th September 2014 in Cambridge. You may like to consider this, as a way of broadening your skills and to save your organisation significant money on poor recruitment.

Future Product

STUDENT TEACHER EMERGENETICS PROFILE (STEP) We are very excited about launching STEP into the UK market. It has been a huge success with schools and colleges in the US. We are now planning how to carefully and effectively launch it into the Middle East market, to maximise the benefit it can have in our education sector. STEP is a variant of the normal Emergenetics Profile, designed specifically to help students and teachers work more effectively together. At present we are talking to a number of schools, colleges and education providers to select pilot organisations for the first phase of the launch.

“ I attended the Leadership Development Program co-

delivered by Mr. David Sales and Dr. Antoine Eid back in March 2014 and really enjoyed the experience. This made me recommend the program to 3 of my company’s directors, of which 2 were not on very good terms. They all attended a 1-day Meeting of the Minds workshop delivered by Dr. Eid, where they discovered their and their colleagues thinking and behavioral preferences. What was most surprising to me is that the 2 directors who came to the training on not very good terms, left the workshop as very good friends and their relationship is now stronger than ever before. Their feedback to me was that they enjoyed learning about each other and now understand each other better. It’s all thanks to the Emergenetics Profiling tool and the training from Leapership Consultants. I am now arranging for the whole team of over 20 to take their profiles and get a training with Leapership! – Louai Bissar – Country Manager, Dar Al Dawa
