From the Editor
Welcome to the September
Newsletter. First of all I would like
to thank, on behalf of the village,
Karen Brown for her 10 years’ of
editorship of this Newsletter;
various editors have come and gone
but Karen has been the mainstay.
Thank you Karen.
Secondly, I am happy to say that we
will have two new editors joining the
newsletter team, Richard Williams
and Gina Ferrari.
The Summer months seem to be
slipping away all too quickly, at least
this Summer has seen the BBQ exit
the shed but as yet still unused!
Not so my neighbours who have made
full use of their BBQs in the sunny
weather.
Looking at the Diary the next two
months seem to be filled with a
variety of events from Harvest
Fairs, Food Fayres, Choirs, Cream

Healthwatch Cambridgeshire is your local health and care champion. There are lots of important conversations happening at the moment about the future of our local health and care services. It is our job to make sure you are listened to when decisions are made. We are there to ask questions on your behalf. Some of the conversations we’ve been involved in recently include:
• Hinchingbrooke Hospital merger
• Care at Addenbrookes and the Rosie
• The future of older people’s health care and adult community services
• Children and Young people’s mental health
• Crisis mental health care
• NHS 111 and out of hours GP care
We have also published Thriving, our report into children and young people's mental health. We wrote Thriving to help make sure children and young people are listened to by local commissioners and providers. They are using it to help redesign children and adolescents’ mental health services. Talk to us. We need know how health and care is working in Cambridgeshire for you and the people who are important to you. We will listen to your experiences and share them with the people who make decisions about local services, without identifying you. We also provide an Information Service and can help you find out about:
• health and social care services near to you
• what to do if you have a concern or complaint
• organisations that can give you help or advice
We are always happy to talk to local groups and attend events, so please do invite us. Contact us www.healthwatchcambridgeshire.co.uk or call 01480 420628.

The “Mordens Community First Response Group”; hopefully NOT coming
to you soon! What is a “community first response (CFR) group” and who runs it? I hear yourself saying. A CFR group is run by local volunteers who are trained by the ambulance service (East of England Ambulance Service in our case) to attend emergency calls in the area where they live or work. Their aim is to reach a potential life threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives on scene. The volunteer’s role is to help stabilise the patient and, in doing so, keep the patient alive until the
arrival of the more highly skilled ambulance crew, who are trained to undertake further life saving
techniques. When a 999 call is made to the Ambulance service, the call is prioritised to establish if it
is suitable to send a Community First Responder to the call. Once this has been established, the
nearest available responder group is notified by the provided telephone to alert them to a call within
their area. An ambulance will always be mobilised to every call that the responder group attends. A
responder will attend Category A 'immediately life – threatening' calls. These calls can include:
• cardiac arrest • diabetic emergency • unconscious patient
• beathing difficulties • seizures
Being in the local community, the average time to reach the patient should not normally exceed 3-4
minutes, depending on location.
The volunteer will stay on the scene until a full hand-over has been given to the ambulance crew. The Mordens group, of which I am one, have had thorough training by the East of England
Ambulance Service, which will continue on a regular basis. Although we are now trained and ready to
go, we are currently raising the funding to purchase the full medical kit, as well as the ongoing
running costs once we go live. The initial setup per kit is circa £2000. As I write in the middle of June,
in the last 3 weeks, we have received very generous donations from local businesses and individuals
to take us over the £1000 mark. The Ambulance Service has kindly loaned us part of the kit until we
have raised the full amount, so in effect, allowing us to become operational at the end of June. Our
12 month ambition is to raise sufficient funds for 2 full kits, thus providing a more efficient and timely
service.
The group is being run by Wayne Cox and currently has the following volunteers:
• Nick Badger & Sean Comerford from Steeple Morden
• Wayne Cox, Kate Cox and Lynn Pestall from Guilden Morden If you would like to find out more about the group, or indeed be interested in making a donation or sponsorship, we would love to hear from you. Please contact either myself, Nick Badger on (01763) 852191, 07860 537114 or mail [email protected] or indeed Wayne on (01763) 853206, 07795 823376 or mail [email protected] Many thanks for taking the time to read this article, I hope you found it of interest.
