Volume 13, Issue 15 Friday, September 28, 2018 Dear School Family,
Welcome to the end of
Term 3! We’ve finished
off the final day with
Year 8, 9 and 10 Year
Level excursions to the
Ice Arena, Mega Courts
and the Beach House.
These events provide a great opportunity
for students to strengthen their bond as a
Year Level, and perhaps try something
they haven’t done before. Early next term
you will see some highlights from each
excursion.
Recently our two Head Prefects, Theresa
Aleppilly Biju and Luke Perrina, visited
Government House. The Governor hosted
a reception for senior secondary students,
as an opportunity for him to meet young
South Australians, and for the students to
visit Government House.
We also had a number of senior students
who had the opportunity to attend the
annual South Australian Prayer Breakfast
at the Adelaide Convention Centre, on
Thursday 20th September. It was an early
morning for them, leaving our campus at
6am, but a fantastic experience for them
to be able to attend such an event.
In the last newsletter I mentioned some
staff who are finishing with us at the end
of the year. I am pleased to announce that
Miss Laurie Rundle will be our new
Assistant Principal Student Development
from the beginning of 2019. Laurie has
been on staff with us for 6 years, has been
Year 8 Coordinator for 2 years, and
replaced Mr Hudson previously during his
Long Service Leave. Mrs Jessica Anthony
will be taking on the position of English
Coordinator, whilst maintaining her current
role as Coordinator of our Learning Hub.
Congratulations to both of these staff on
their appointments.
As we break for the holidays, we pray
God’s blessing on all of our families, and
particularly for our Year 12s who will need
to continue working through the holidays,
ready to finish classes at the end of Week
2 next term.

From Mr Marcel Rijken, who is
currently on the Cambodia Mis-
sions trip with Felicity Fanto, Han-
nah Alderman and Aurelia Czudek
(all in Year 11):
I write this piece from the village
region of Takeo in Cambodia. It is
surrounded by beautiful rice pad-
dies that give the illusion of an
idyllic life. The truth is very far from
this as rural Cambodia is very
poor. In this village is The Greater
Hope School, which has 700 stu-
dents. They are bringing the truth of the gospel and education. The quality of
what they provide contrasts sharply to the government schools. The locals
all really want their children in the Jesus school as they call it.
The last time I joined the trip was in 2012 and it is incredible to see the devel-
opment, but still overwhelmed by the great need. What I am most moved by
as we visit and work with the different ministries is the growth of Cambodians
helping Cambodians. It is an incredible encouragement to see the sacrifice
made by these locals to help their people. The path to a better future is
through education and to really tackle corruption. We would see the need for
a real move of God. The students have been exceptional throwing themselves wholeheartedly into every experience and
embracing what the trip is really about.
This is the 12th trip to Cambodia for Temple, and we have developed great worthwhile relationships over this time. I look
forward to continuing to grow these valuable relationships as we take teams each year.
Crochet Club The Crochet Club has been running for the past two terms with the help of Miss
Barton, Mrs Pavljuk and Mrs Saler. Meeting once a week in the Learning Hub,
the Crochet Club created a space for students and staff to learn new skills or
refine old ones. Beginners were taught some basics, and most students found
they wanted to keep crocheting at home.
My aim for the Crochet Club was to teach students to crochet and to produce as
many blankets as possible to donate to the Animal Welfare League. Thanks to
the Crochet Club and especially Mrs Pavljuk and Mrs Saler we exceeded expec-
tations.
On the 7th of September, Crochet Club members and students interested in ani-
mals or the AWL were invited to attend a special lunch time event. Maddie, an
AWL Representative visited our school, with her lovely rescue dog Lulu.
Maddie spoke to us about the role of the AWL and the importance of micro-
chipping and desexing. She told us that “the AWL care for over 12,000 animals
annually and last year adopted out 4,018 pets. Of the animals that enter into our
care only 2% are microchipped and of that only 33 % can be re-homed with their
owners due to incorrect microchip details.”
The AWL had just ran out of blankets for the animals, so it was amazing that we
could supply them with just under 90 small blanket squares that will be used to line pet baskets.
If you are interested in volunteering, donating or adopting a pet visit awl.org.au for more information!

This year, we have the amazing opportunity to partner with Operation Christmas Child
again! Last year we were so generous as a school and we would love to continue bless-
ing those in need.
For those that don’t know, Opera-
tion Christmas Child is a project
of Samaritan’s Purse. It partners
with schools and churches in
developing nations to reach out
to children by providing gift-filled
shoeboxes and bringing the
Good News of Jesus Christ. Op-
eration Christmas Child is an
opportunity to share Jesus’ love
and to bless a child through a
simple, gift-filled shoebox.
This is a great opportunity to be
involved and be generous. We
will be collecting the packed box-
es on Friday Week 2, Term 4.
Alice This year’s musical was educationally challenging for everyone involved, and at the same time, it was an incredibly re-
warding experience. Students rose to the challenges of learning complex choreography, harmonies, characterisation, team
work, building resilience, new skills, and for many, a new found confidence in themselves. I couldn’t have been prouder or
more honoured to work with our team of staff, volunteers, and beautiful students as they engaged in this project. Some of
the things students said they learned about themselves…
“I learnt that I can make friends. I didn’t know I could make new friends that easily.”
“I have confidence I didn’t have before.”
“I learnt that I can memorise things, and that I talked negatively about myself, but now I have a different attitude. When I
think I can’t do something, I now want to try, instead of telling myself I can’t do it.”
“I learnt that I can extend myself and be myself around other people instead of hiding in the corner.”
“I learnt that with confidence I can achieve something.”
Engagement in the Arts changes who we are. The Arts develop us as people. It’s simply a joy to see students trying new
things, and developing relationships with those they may not have ever engaged with before this process. Well done to
EVERYONE involved!

Year 9 Camp During Week 6, we took our Year 9s on a 4-day camp to Douglas Scrub Campsite, which is situated just outside of McLar-
en Vale. They were split into 6 teams (Agnew Army, Green Machines, Yeeaahh Deboys, The Walking Dents, Bananas in
Pyjamas & Burf’s Smurfs) and were engaged in various outdoor activities, many of which the majority of students were
undertaking for the first time. The camp comprises of a 1 ½ day bushwalk, where the students are required to carry all of
their supplies including a tent, Trangia (camp stove), food, water, clothes and sleeping bag and camp overnight in the for-
est; a half day surfing; half day kayaking down at Noarlunga; a billy cart building and racing session; and a mountain bik-
ing session. Such activities pushed many outside their comfort zones, but we couldn’t be prouder of the way they tackled
each challenge head on. There were no complaints and the students really bonded through the experience, lifting each
other up when it was needed.
I would also like to thank the amazing staff that gave up their homes, families and comforts to come and spend time with
us. Mr. Agnew, Mrs. Dadd, Miss Papanicolas, Mr. Pana, Mr. Burfield and Mr. Pitman (who no longer works at Temple but
arranged to come anyway, what a legend), thank you so much. Not only would it be impossible for me to run everything on
my own, but the love and encouragement that you have given to our students is invaluable and I’m sure they will treasure
the time you gave for years to come.
We saw some incredible growth in our students across the camp and I assure you there are plenty of incredible leaders
and team players within this group. The future of Temple Paralowie is looking very bright.
Thank you all for being so amazing!!!

Excursion to Kaladari Industries Design and Technology students have formed an exciting partnership with Kaladari Industries. In Term 3, students designed
components for the Unmanned Vehicle Engineering (UVE) Challenge and Concept 2 Creation (C2C) Project using industry
standard software in preparation for manufacture at the factory. Students were then able to attend the factory and watch
their components being made using metal laser cutting, CNC bending and powder coating processes.

Year 8/9 SACSA Soccer On Thursday of Week 8, the Year 8/9 boys
competed at the SACSA Soccer tourna-
ment at West Beach. The boys played
great football all day and were undefeated
in the group stage. A Semi-Final versing
Mile End saw them come out on top, win-
ning 1-0 and progressing to the Grand Fi-
nal against Endeavour College. Unfortu-
nately the boys came up short in the final,
losing 1-0 in a tight contest. It was a great
day of competition and our 8/9 boys should
be very proud of their achievements.

Staff/Student Netball On Monday of week 10, we held our annual
staff-student Netball game. Coming off a win
last year, staff were keen to retain their title
over the Year 12s. There was a lot of pride on
the line, so the stakes were high for both stu-
dents and staff. The students got out to a quick
lead in the first quarter, which they were able
to hold for most of the game. Throughout the
second and third quarter the staff were able to
make a comeback, levelling the score and
gaining a small lead. The final quarter saw a
strong performance from the Year 12s, scoring
some unanswered goals, which eventuated in
their win. Congratulations to the students on
their win! A big thankyou to Sports Captains
Astrid and Nathan for organising the student team, and to Brooke Fleming and Chelsea Joy for Umpiring.

NUT AWARENESS This is a reminder that the school has chosen to become a "Nut Aware" school.
This awareness has been implemented because there is an increased number
of students at our school who have severe peanut/nut allergies. These students cannot be exposed to nuts in ANY form, as this will
trigger an anaphylac c reac on ‐‐ that is a reac on requiring an immediate injec on of adrenalin, ambulancea endance and hos‐
pitaliza on.
This has very serious consequences for our students and in their best interests,
we ask that care is taken with all peanut/nuts and food containing nuts within theschool. The Canteen/Home Ec. has also under‐
taken the change. The school
acknowledges that due to food processing prac ces, it is imprac cal to eliminatenuts or nut products en rely from an environ‐
ment where there is food. Thus"Nut Aware" School.
PARENTS AND FRIENDS
As parents, a vibrant school community is important to us. Being involved in the Parents and Friends group not only
gives us the opportunity to be actively engaged in supporting events and initiatives, but provides a wonderful
avenue through which to get to know and work alongside other parents. Together we make a difference in the life of
the school.
If you would like to join us, an invitation is extended to all interested parents and friends to join us at any of the
Parents and Friends meetings held through the year.
If you have any questions, agenda items or suggestions for the Parents & Friends, please email Susanna Fanto -
