Heads of School

I am delighted to announce the following as Heads of School for the next academic year:

Head Girl – Katherine Savage Head Boy – Edward Bradnam

It is a great honour for Katherine and Edward. I have no doubt they will be excellent ambassadors for the school and will continue to be exemplary role models to the younger children. My con-gratulations to them both.

National Champions!

The Athletics season finished in spectacular fashion on Tuesday at the National Prep Schools Fi-nals, with Charlotte Hull achieving Bronze in the High Jump, Olivia Williams becoming National Champion winning Gold in the 800 metres, and then our Year 6 Relay team of Arabella Ruddle, Charlotte Hull, Georgia Coker-Agar and Imogen Lott winning Gold themselves to become National Champions. This is an absolutely brilliant achievement – congratulations to them all.

Summer Concert

The Summer Concert was a lovely event and a very fitting way to end the musical year. The standard of playing and singing was extremely high indeed and it was an absolute pleasure to see 13 of our different music ensembles performing. A huge thank you and well done to the children and, of course, to Miss Morrell, Mrs Fountain and the Peripatetic team.

Nigel Townsend

The news of Nigel’s tragic passing conveyed in the newsletter last week has elicited an over-whelming response, with so many of you contacting me to say how sorry you were to hear of Nigel’s death and to pass on condolences to his close friends and family. A number of you, as former Spratton pupils yourselves, have asked for details of funeral arrangements. There will be a private cremation, but an open ‘Celebration of his Life’ Service at 2pm on Wednesday 18th July at Guilsborough Church.

Leavers

I will of course say more at Speech Day tomorrow, but I want to thank and congratulate all of our leavers, whether in Year 8 or the younger years, for everything they have contributed to Spratton Hall over the years. I do hope they stay in touch and come back to visit in the years to come. We will miss them all very much.

End of Term

What an incredible few weeks we have enjoyed! The splendid weather has contributed to the many special events and activities that the children have enjoyed. I congratulate and thank all the pupils for their hard work, enthusiasm and successes throughout the year.

Speech Day tomorrow should be a very special occasion. Just to remind you our Guest of Honour is Mr Simon Parker, who is a journalist, filmmaker and travel writer, whom I know will give inspir-ing words to the children.

I wish you all a very happy summer.

Leamington Spa Music Festival On Saturday 30th June, Rohan Bheemappa, Ashwin Ramani and Paulo Cinquini-Steel took part in The Leamington Spa Music Festival, adjudicated by international-ly acclaimed guitarist, Marcus Noble. Ashwin was awarded first place against tough competition with a Distinction, winning both a medal and a trophy. Rohan and Paolo both took part in the Grade 2-3 class, again against very tough competi-tion. Paolo was awarded a Merit and was just out of the top three places. Rohan was awarded 1st place with an Outstanding, winning both a medal and the trophy.

I was delighted to hear that Archie Parker-Jones also took part in the festival play-ing the piano in two classes. Archie won 1st place in the ‘Disney Class’ playing the Imperial March. An excellent achievement.

Summer Serenade Concert What a wonderful evening of musical entertainment. We were treated to a wide range of different styles of music from all of our musical ensembles. It was lovely to see so many pupils taking part, from those just starting their musical career to those more ex-perienced. Congratulations to everybody who took part, you worked very hard in re-hearsals and should be proud of the standard of music achieved. For some, this was their last concert at Spratton and I would like to wish all those who are leaving the very best for the future.

Music Lessons Music lessons are available on a wide variety of orchestral instruments as well as piano, drums, singing and music theory. If you would like your child to have a music lesson, please complete an ‘Instrumental Lesson Request Form’ which you can collect from the school office.

Thank you The Music Department would like to thank pupils and parents for their commitment, support and encouragement this year. We look for-ward to further success next year!

School Diary for July

Life in Year 8 - Outward Bound in Wales

Defenders—Russia World Cup 2018

Chapter 14 has been published and the suspense is building. Not only about

the continuation of England in the World Cup competition, but also whether

Seth will be in time to rescue Nadiya, who is being held captive in a tomb in the

Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul? An exciting climax is looming.

In response to the question, how many further daily chapters will be written?

Tom Palmer has replied: ‘The main story comes to a denouement on Friday. But

then there will be a vote asking what children (and teachers!) want for the last

week of the story.’ In order to read the rest of the story pupils will need to

access the remaining chapters from home by visiting: Literacy Trust

These chapters will be available on the students’ drive

next term, if they can wait that long!

I think there will be many questions to ask the author

about this book, when he visits the school in Novem-

ber.

What a whirlwind of emotions this week has

been – the giddy excitement of the imminent

summer holidays, mixed with the butterflies

of anticipation linked to moving on, and for

some, a tinge of sadness at saying goodbye to

Pre-Prep.

Year 2 delivered a brilliant and heart-warming assembly on Monday, reflecting on their

time in school, right from their early days in Reception – my goodness, how they have

grown, not just in height, but in their abilities, skills and confidence too. As a parting gift,

to commemorate their time in Pre-Prep, SHSPA have kindly given each child a copy of the

latest, newly released, David Walliams book, which I am sure they will thoroughly enjoy

dipping into over the summer.

Sadly, with the end of term upon us, it is not just our Year 2 children who are moving on,

as we also say our goodbyes to two members of Pre-Prep staff. Mrs Fleming-Jones, the

Registrar and our Pre-Prep Admin Assistant, is relocating to Wales, in a very exciting new

venture for her family, whilst Mrs Goodwin bids her farewells to focus on being a mum-

my to her two young children. Both Mrs Fleming-Jones and Mrs Goodwin will be greatly

missed by children and staff alike, and we wish them all the very best for the future.

Also this week, we hosted a Nursery Managers’ and Keyworkers’ Tea. Thinking ahead to

September and to the essential planning and preparation needed to meet the needs of

our new Reception children, it was both a fascinating and productive information sharing

afternoon. In addition to sampling Mr Sharpe’s cakes, our guests were absolutely thrilled

to be taken on a tour of Pre-Prep, where they were able to say a fond hello to lots of fa-

miliar and smiling faces that they had once cared for.

As I write, the children and staff are busy preparing for one of the most special and ex-

citing events of the Pre-Prep calendar – our Pre-Prep Speech Day and Prize Giving. Re-

flecting on the learning journeys that the children take, as each academic year passes,

never fails to overwhelm and delight me. Children have the most extraordinary capaci-

ties to discover, learn and explore and I know I speak for all of the Pre-Prep staff when I

say how immensely proud of them we are. With laughter, smiles, songs and maybe a few

happy tears, this afternoon is all about celebrating the progress and achievement of eve-

ry one of our children.

Finally, as another year reaches its completion, a huge thank you to you as parents for

your ongoing support and, from all of the staff in Pre-Prep, we wish you a wonderfully

happy, relaxing and fun-filled Summer. We look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Fiona Sanchez
