Year 8 Charity Programme One of the areas of Spratton Hall of which I am most proud is the charity work our children do throughout the school, culminating in our Year 8 children adopting charities for the year, raising both funds and awareness for them. This year, each of the Year 8 forms has chosen a charity to support throughout the year:

8R—British Heart Foundation 8E—CLIC Sargent (a leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families) 8W—Alzheimer's Society

I know the children will do excellent work, both in and out of school, for those charities.

We were also delighted to welcome Tanya from the Hope Centre who attended our assembly this morning to talk to the children about the excellent work that the Hope Centre does for vulnerable and homeless people in Northampton. It was so good for the children to hear directly what their Harvest produce will go towards.

House Competition Although the children have already been busy earning and achieving pluses for their good work, kind deeds and behaviour, the first of the special House competition events takes place next week, with the Senior English Competition on Tuesday morning – the best of luck to all competitors.

Year 7 in Edale I have heard excellent reports of how Year 7 have got on in Edale this week. Equestrian

The equestrian team went to the NSEA qualifying event at Keysoe and put forward another new combination team of Daniel Gibbard, Emilia Beers, Alice Mackaness, Rebecca Eales and Willow Docker.

There was both a showjumping qualifier and an arena eventing one, the latter being a combination of cross country and show-jumping.

The team gave a really good account of themselves, as this was the most challenging course to date for the team. All jumped really well, with Daniel jumping clear in all his classes .

Team results were a very commendable 2nd in both events, qualifying for the Open National Schools Championships in Oc-tober and the Inter Schools Arena Eventing Championships.

There were some excellent individual results across the board with Class 1 being a clean sweep for Spratton as we took 1st-5th places with a win for Willow.

Also qualifying individually for the championships in their re-spective classes were Willow, Rebecca and Daniel.

These results are especially exciting as three children were on new ponies, so an excellent first outing.

Oakham Music Day – 3rd October

A letter has been sent out to all the Year 6 Choir members about the Oakham Music Day. Please return the reply slip as soon as possible.

Cancelled Club

There will not be a School Choir practice on Tuesday 3rd October due to the Oakham Music Day.

Terminating Music Lessons

If you wish to cancel your child’s individual instrumental les-sons, please be aware that notice must be received in writing, by the half term preceding the termination of lessons.

ABRSM Exam Certificates – Summer Term

It has been brought to my attention that there was a spelling error on the certificates printed by the ABRSM last term. In-stead of it reading ‘Spratton Hall’ it does in fact read ‘Ypratton Hall’. The ABRSM will reprint the certificates, however to do this, they need to have the original certificate back. Should you wish for your certificate to be reprinted, please can you return the original to me by Friday 29th September. I will then send them back to the ABRSM to be reprinted.

The book Fair will be visiting us on Friday 22nd until

Wednesday 27th September, which is a day earlier than

published in our school calendar. It will be open for par-

ents (with or without their children) to visit today from

4.00—5.20 pm. A letter has been sent home for you to

indicate if your child can

choose a book which

will be added to your

school account (no cash

please).

Closing Date: 13th October 2018

Harvest Collection Once again, we are collecting donations for the Hope Centre in Northampton. Earlier this term, a group of 15 Year 8 pupils visited the Centre to experience, first-hand, how they help the most vulner-able in our community. Tanya, from the Hope Centre, also visited the school to help us understand the vital part our donations will play in helping support their clients. We ask each year group to fo-cus on a specific foodstuff/item and to bring in as we approach our harvest service.

Year 3 Cereals (all) Year 4 Tinned items (soup, beans, fruit, rice pudding etc.) Year 5 Toiletries (toothpaste, soap, shampoo etc.) Year 6 Beverages (tea, coffee, long-life milk, juice etc.) Years 7 & 8 A standalone meal (e.g. pasta, sauce and veg)

Spratton always gives generously at this time. Our food ensures the Hope Centre can continue to help and support those most in need. Please help make a difference again.

Thank you.

Head Lice - Send them Packing! I am sorry to say that a large number of cases of head lice have been detected in school once again. Please could you take the time to check your child’s hair and treat accordingly. If your child is found to have head lice, it is important to treat your child before he/she re-turns to school. Please begin treatment as soon as possible. It is most uncomfortable for your child and they do get distracted from their work and play when they are constantly scratching and complaining of an itchy scalp. Head lice are small, six-legged wingless insects about the size of a pin-head when fully grown and grey/brown in col-our. Head lice cannot jump or fly but spread by head-to-head contact.

Lice hang on tight to the hair, usually close to the scalp where there is warmth, food and shelter from detection. They feed by biting and sucking blood from their host and a female louse will lay eggs in sacs known as ‘nits’. Lice hatch within 7–10 days and take another 6–14 days to become fully grown and capable of reproduction. A head louse infection is annoying and uncomfortable but it is not harmful or dangerous.

A regular weekly check by wet-combing is rec-ommended. Lice can be treated easily with vari-ous products from the chemist.

Many thanks for your cooperation.

Thank you—Matron

With the earthy scent of damp leaves beginning to fill the morning air and our eyes becoming ever more alert for shiny conkers, our thoughts are turning to our Harvest Festival celebrations in school. Within our Pre-Prep Assemblies over the coming weeks, we will be thinking not only about the types of foods presently being harvested, but also about how we can share what we have with those who are less fortunate than we are. With this special message in mind, Pre-Prep, along with the Prep School, are gathering together a wonderful donation of items to send to the Hope Centre in Northampton, a charity which provides nutritious and affordable meals for the homeless. Donations can be taken straight to the Hunter Hall or handed to your child’s class teacher. Thank you, in advance, for your support of this worthy cause.

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed a trek up to the outdoor classroom this week where, foraging around for the first Autumn treasures of the season, they set about creating beautiful and imaginative pieces of envi-ronmental land art, as inspired by the artist Andy Goldsworthy. Clutching armfuls of golden leaves, twigs, seed pods and pine cones, they assembled some stunning patterns and designs. Please do go to the website gallery to admire them.

Assemblies are such a special and uplifting part of the Pre-Prep day. Bound by a wonderful sense of belonging, we gather together to share positive and encouraging thoughts which guide our everyday choices, and to learn more about the world in which we live. Our Year Group Assemblies, led by the children, are very proud occasions, which, as many of you are already aware, take place in the Hunter Hall in front of a large audience of parents, family and friends. As they are not in the school calendar, I have included the upcoming dates of these assemblies on this page, so that you can make a note of them in your diaries.

The Pre-Prep Parent/Teacher Consultation Evenings, which are due to take place shortly, provide par-ents with a wonderful opportunity to discuss how well their child has settled into new routines, and en-gage in valuable discussions with the class teacher. By now, all parents should have received their ‘On-line Appointment Booking’ letters via email, which gives details on how to use our computerised book-ing system. It is important to note that appointments can only be made on-line up until 11.00 am on Tuesday 5th October. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher, who will be more than happy to help, should you experience any technical difficulties. If arriving after 5.45 pm on the longer Parent/Teacher Consultation Evening, please do come to the middle area, where I will be serving drinks and refreshments to welcome you.

Finally, on Tuesday Pre-Prep took part in a whole school cake sale in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. With a mouth-watering selection of iced cupcakes, cookies and chocolate filled brownies to choose from, the children thoroughly enjoyed donating their 50p in exchange for an extra playtime treat!
