College Photo Day this year is on Thursday 2 May. On Thursday of

this week, all students received an ordering envelope detailing the process for

you to order your child’s photos. Please read the information on the envelope

clearly, especially the different ways in which you can order photos. If you

have more than one child at the College and would like them to have a sibling

photo, you will need to obtain a separate ordering envelope from the College

office. Students who are absent on 2 May will have an opportunity to have

their photo taken on Tuesday 7 May.

Description of the Artwork - Title: Hands of Mercy

Collective Year 10 painting

This collective Year 10 painting focuses on the

individual interpretation of what mercy is, when

mercy may be needed and how an act of mercy

can be expressed. In order to connect the panels,

students chose a hand gesture that is often

associated with mercy and acts of kindness as their

subject matter. Whilst all panels depict the same

gesture, students depicted their own connections

and associations with mercy.

5 TERM 1 - WEEK 7 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

PARENT EVENINGGUEST SPEAKER - PAUL DILLONTHURSDAY 4 APRIL, 7PM VALDOCCO CENTRE (COLLEGE HALL)

TOPIC: ‘Risk taking’: Why do teens do the things they do? What can parents do to keep them as safe as possible?

Adolescence is a risky time. As a teen matures and becomes more independent, they experience dramatic hormonal changes, increasing social and peer pressure and have greater access to alcohol and other drugs. This presentation will briefly examine the history of ‘teenagers’, rebellion and the different ‘temptations’ that have existed over time. Using the latest research on the developing brain, it will also discuss why adolescence is a period of ‘risk-taking’ and the reasons why young people make the decisions they do during this time. Sleepovers, parties and gatherings provide teens with valuable opportunities to develop important socializing skills but are not ‘risk-free’.

The presentation will also provide some practical strategies and tips for parents considering allowing their teen to attend such an event to help ensure they are as safe as possible.

All parents from both St John Bosco College and St John Bosco Primary School are welcome to this invaluable Parent Evening.

HOSTING JAPANESE STUDENTSSt John Bosco College will be hosting Japanese students from 31 July - 7 August 2019.

On Tuesday 26 March, students in Years 7 and 9 will participate in a short online practice Naplan test. The results of this test will not be recorded or collected, however the test will offer students and staff the opportunity to practise how to access and answer questions for the Naplan online tests in May.

Year 9 students will undertake the practice test during Period 3 and Year 7 during period 4 in the Valdocco Centre (College Hall). The test will consist of practice questions based on reading, numeracy and language conventions. Mr Kennedy and the College Internet Support Officers have checked with most students over the last few days to ensure the locked down browser, required to access the test, is installed on each student's computer. Mr Kennedy has sent an email with these instructions on 10 March to Years 7 and 9 parents and students.

Students should ensure they bring:

• their laptop - fully charged with the locked down browser installed

• their charging cable, as a back up in case of battery failure

• a working set of wired headphones or ear buds

• a book to read if they finish early

CONSIDERING STUDYING

MEDICINE OR DENTISTRY?

Some universities in Australia (including the

University of NSW and University of Western Sydney)

require students considering courses in medicine and

dentistry to complete the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) as part of their admissions process.

The test helps universities to select applicants with

the most appropriate abilities and professional

behaviours required for new doctors and dentists

to be successful in their clinical careers. It is used in

collaboration with other admissions processes such

as interviews and academic qualifications.

The UCAT ANZ is a computer-based test

delivered in Pearson VUE test centres

throughout Australia, New Zealand and at some

overseas locations.

Please note that some pathways to medicine /

dentistry / clinical sciences will not require the UCAT.

For some applicants a different test may be required.

For details candidates should refer to the websites of

the universities to which they intend to apply.

The UCAT ANZ test is available to any candidate

whose educational level at the time of sitting the test

is their final year of secondary schooling, or higher.

Registrations for UCAT are now open and close 17 May 2019.

For more information on UCAT and participating

universities visit:

Year 11 Geography Excursion - Garie Beach

On Wednesday 20 March the Year 11 geography classes experienced an excursion to Garie Beach in order to develop a more in depth understanding of the topic we are currently studying: coasts and the impacts that affect the coasts. At the beginning of the day all Year 11 Geography students gathered to board a bus and head to Garie Beach within the National Park.

Upon arrival we were given time to prepare ourselves for what would be an interesting experience. A brief introduction to the learning experiences of the day was provided by our two park rangers Sue and Martin before we began exploring the coastal environment. A short walk was taken to the rock platform, picking up any plastic along the way. Once reaching the platform we were given time to analyse and discover the organisms that inhabited the rock pools. We were then separated into two mixed groups to determine the abiotic features both behind and in front of the sand dune features. Additionally, the separate groups examined and tried catching microorganisms while the remaining group inspected the landforms in the distance, and the differentiating species of the

region. Both groups were granted the opportunity to participate in all activities establishing an understanding of the coastal environment and the interactions of the four spheres.

We then returned to the primary meeting point, to eat lunch and regather our energy, before continuing theory work regarding the natural processes of waves and their impact, and the effects of human activity on the Garie Beach area.

This concluded our insightful and enjoyable excursion to Garie Beach, and definitely broadened our understanding of the coastal environment. We would like to thank Sue and Martin for guiding us throughout the day, and give special thanks to Mrs Babic and Mr Salabay for leading us and aiding in our learning on an exciting day.

9 TERM 1 - WEEK 7 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

YEAR 9 ISTEM: WORKING COLLABORATIVELY TO SOLVE PROBLEMSiSTEM is a Stage 5 elective subject that aims to

integrate the practical skills and knowledge of

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

to solve real-world problems. The subject

encourages students to work collaboratively to

develop creative solutions to these problems using a

structured process of research and experimentation.

Students in Year 9 iSTEM have been developing

these collaboration skills by working in groups to

design and construct a scaled model of a bridge that

could span vehicle and pedestrian access

across Loftus station to alleviate traffic at

Sutherland station. The process of finding a solution

to this problem involved developing structured

experiments and recording findings, working with

balsa wood to construct a model and performing

calculations based on scale.

The class will be looking forward to extending their

collaboration and problem-solving skills as they

embark on developing a cardboard robotic arm

with movements based on the science of hydraulics.

They will be experimenting with using laser cutting

technologies during this process.

The homophones that teachers and students are focusing on in weeks 7 and 8 are where, we’re and wear.

Where is used to ask a question that is related to location or giving directions to a location.

Where are you going? I know where you live.

We’re is a contraction of we are.

We’re (we are) flying to New York tomorrow.

Wear refers to clothing, accessories or equipment on or carried on your body.

You need to wear a tie to the wedding.

OR refers to something being excessively used.

Tyres eventually wear out.

(NOTE: Where is often incorrectly written as were. Were is a verb and the past tense of are,

e.g. We were happy.)
