4 Legged STAR Partners Needed!STAR partners with horses & ponies varying in shapes, sizes, ages & breeds. As our herd ages we need additional fit, healthy and sound horses. Go to www.rideatstar.org/horse-donation.html for horse criteria and consider leasing or donating your horse. Our current needs are: *Beginner safe off-lead horse. 15 – 16 hand range. *Draft or draft/cross horse. Preferably under 17 years and 17 hands. *Pony, 12 – 13.3 hands. Lead line friendly, off lead potential.

Quiet temperament, excellent ground manners and strong backs are imperative. Must be sound to walk & trot. Chronic conditions are considered on individual basis. Non-gaited horses preferred as we have fulfilled our needs with gaited stock.

Additionally, good homes are needed for our retired STAR equine partners. Call Jennifer Burkhardt or email [email protected].

STARBook Sale AMAZING!

During the Horse Show STAR held a gently used book sale which was a great suc-cess!

New and gen-tly used books were gener-ously donated and placed in the STAR great

room. During lunch, or between classes everyone had an opportu-nity to shop.

Many thanks to all who brought and bought books!

Annual STAR Horse Show! Many thanks to our sponsors and volunteers in making the 2018 STAR Horse Show a success! A lot of prep goes into making the horses sparkle and the barn shine. STAR staff and volunteers ROCK! The Monroe County Vaulting Club showcased kids of all ages vaulting on “B”, the Percheron mare. Judges Rita Dunn and Sonja Cowsert evaluated 47 STAR participants in obstacles, dressage and equitation classes. We thank Food City-Lenoir City, Food City-Loudon, Family Brands, Aaron’s Rental, LCUB and Ingles-Lenoir City for donating food and drinks. STAR riders proved to be very capable and we are proud of their accomplish-ments! Thank you to STAR Board and Akima Club members for handing out ribbons.

Did you know?An average volunteer logs 2500 steps per lesson? With all that walking STAR Volunteers could grow healthier hearts, strengthen immune systems and improve sensory stimulation* when they volunteer at STAR! Call Julia Cronin or [email protected] *www.healthinfocus.net

Blake M. started riding at STAR in 2006 when he was 5 years old and continued riding through the 2017 Spring Session. He was born with spina bifida which has always affected his walking and balance. After a year hiatus due to some seri-ous health issues, Blake started back at STAR this summer. One major change for Blake was going from using a walker to needing a wheelchair. Additionally he now had limited use of his left arm and hand. Blake said that his main reason for wanting to ride again is that he missed being with the horses. He also wanted to

Back in the Saddle Again! Blake M.

work on his balance and core strength (horseback riding really works these two areas). In the four months since he has been back, Blake’s confidence has increased and his balance has improved. He participated in our horse show in August and rode in the advance walk only where he was required to ride patterns such as a figure eight, circles and weaving cones with him steering his horse; all of which he did with just his right hand. It is great to see our partici-pant’s working so hard on their personal goals and achieving them. We are glad to have Blake back in the saddle at STAR and with a smile on his face.

Need a loving retirement home for dear Brunka, one of STAR’s Icelandic horses. She will require a dry lot or minimal grass due to sensitivity. Otherwise Brunka is a pretty easy keeper.

Please call Jennifer Burkhardt at the STAR office for details. 865-988-4711

Brunka ready for retirement

Sanya Stewart, STAR Director of Services and Lead Instructor is driv-ing the effort to reach out to memory care, assisted living facilities and schools. Clarity Pointe, Concordia Kindred, Dogwood Elementary, Northshore Assisted Living, Life Care Center of Blount County and Williamsburg Villa are just some of the facilities who understand what joy and connection Honey, Flash, Bentley and Hodie bring to their resi-dents or students. Of course, none of this happens without the help of our STAR Volunteers such as Nancy Sterling, Betsy Luther, Elaine Wagner, Gail Taylor, Peggy Pemberton and Margaret Hollow and oth-ers who bring our Minis to the community!

Book aSTAR Field Trip!

Did you know schools, homeschool groups, senior cen-ters, and other small groups can take a field trip to the STAR barn? For a small fee, groups can come to learn about all things horse. No horseback riding is involved in this type of experience, but there is much that can be learned from the ground!

Groups from West Park Baptist Church and Lenoir City Christian Academy enjoyed spending time with the horses this summer. Participants groomed, prac-ticed on Bucky the equicizer, lead the minis and learned about horses. Contact STAR for more details!
