Giles Junior School “Achieving excellence through Leadership” Newsletter Summer Term Friday 19th July 2019 Giles Junior School News We are here … nearly the end of term. The last two weeks is always packed with fun events, shows, discos, merit awards and the long awaited reward session on the bouncy castle. It has certainly been busy, but still I have taken a moment to reflect on the journey these amazing children have made this year. Having recently met the “new” year 3 children, I observed how proud the “new” year 4 children were when they sat up smartly in assembly. I could literally see their chests puff out with pride and it was noticeable what excellent role models they will be next year. It goes without saying that my eyes are already filling up at the thought of Year 6 leaving. It is always a mixture of emotion. We take comfort in the fact they will able to lead themselves and use their 7 Habits to help them with the transition to secondary school. During our merit assemblies, where we recognize specific achievements for the term, it came to my attention that we had one student who had achieved an amazing feat. Medwin Mathews has 100% attendance for a full 4 years. I will be quizzing him on his top tips, clearly he is sharpening his saw as illness has not hampered his school career! As we approach the final few days of school we will be sending home some work with children (to add to a growing box you have in your loft/cupboard no doubt!). If you could send your child in with a carrier bag it would be helpful. We do not send home every book, as we keep a portion of work should we need to show how much amazing progress these children have made, so your cupboard shouldn’t be too full! An update on Mrs Davies is that she has begun her treatment, three-weekly cycles of chemotherapy. She remains positive and no doubt will visit the school at some point in the not so distant future, but not before the end of term unfortunately. We will send your regards. Mrs Racher - Acting Headteacher Magic Breakfast Due to Mrs Mackenzie’s hard work, Giles has been invited to take part in a National Programme (funded by the sugar tax!) where they fund “free” breakfast for every child. We are going to adopt the “grab and go” model. So watch this space for some staff and year 6 breakfast leaders who will be handing out bagels on the playground before registration! More details to follow! New Staff Further to the letter naming new teachers to our team we do have some sad news that Mrs Conroy will be leaving us at the end of term. She is very sad to leave us, as we are sad to see her go but due to a sudden change in circumstance she can longer commit to teaching at this time. 3 Sweden will be still led by Mrs Jones, joined by Mr Richardson who will teach Wednesday-Friday. Also it might be useful to mention I will be confusing matters in September by a change in name! I will become Miss Whitby, as I revert to my maiden name. The children are picking it up quickly—but I am failing to look up when they say my “new” name. Hopefully we will all get used to it soon!

Giles Junior School News

We are here … nearly the end of term. We take comfort in the fact they will able to lead themselves and use their 7 Habits to help them with the transition to secondary school.

Medwin Mathews has 100% attendance for a full 4 years. I will be quizzing him on his top tips, clearly he is sharpening his saw as illness has not hampered his school career!

Mrs Racher - Acting Headteacher

Magic Breakfast

Due to Mrs Mackenzie’s hard work, Giles has been invited to take part in a National Programme (funded by the sugar tax!) where they fund “free” breakfast for every child. We are going to adopt the “grab and go” model. So watch this space for some staff and year 6 breakfast leaders who will be handing out bagels on the playground before registration! More details to follow!

New Staff

Further to the letter naming new teachers to our team we do have some sad news that Mrs Conroy will be leaving us at the end of term.

I will become

Miss Whitby, as I revert to my maiden name. The children are picking it up quickly—but I am failing to look up when they say my “new” name. Hopefully we will all get used to it soon!

“Rock Bottom” Year 5&6 Production

Year 5 & 6 absolutely blew the roof off with their performance of “Rock Bottom” this week. Keeping the end in mind at all times, they showed what hard work and dedication can achieve. We were left amazed by their singing, acting and hilarious jokes. With synergy that we are all very impressed by, well done everyone!

Celebrating Pupil Success

Many congratulations to Holly in Year 5 who has been selected to perform in the Three Counties Youth Ballet, at the Hertford Theatre, in August.

Good luck for your performances!

Clubs for September - Autumn Term 2019

No messages will be sent about Mr Mendes Sports Clubs, you will only be notified if the club is over-subscribed.

DIY SOS Knowing what a great community we have of hard

working parents we wanted to see if anyone has access to a digger which we could use to make some improvements to our field. If you are able to help with this please contact

the school office.
