On May 13 and 14 the South Mountain District Spring Camporee was held at the Lower Milford Twp. Fire Department #1 facilities. Over 80 Scouts
and Scouters from Troops 306, 329, 334, 362, and 364 attended the Camporee.
The theme of the camporee was Fire Safety. The event was organized by Troop 334 and Troop 306. The Fire Department members reviewed the Fire Safety Merit Badge requirements with the Scouts and Terry Miller a Fire Safety merit badge counselor was able to sign off on the
completed requirements. The boys had a excellent chance for a close up view of the firefighting equipment.

Troop 334’s Historic Hike CampoutsIn April, Troop 334 completed their fifth Historic Hike Campout. This year the Troop, chartered with Chestnut Hill Church in Lower Milford Township, traveled to Valley Forge National Historical Park. Previous years brought them to Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park, Antietam National Battlefield, and twice to Gettysburg National Military Park. According to Troop 334’s Historic Hike organizer, Phil Moreira, “Our spring Historic Hike is one of our most popular trips of the year because it combines camping, hiking, American history, monuments, battlefields, re-enactors, and of course fun.”
Each of these National Parks has a designated BSA hiking trail varying in length from 10-15 miles. For example, the Gettysburg trail includes a Billy Yank 10 mile trail, plus a Johnny Reb 4 mile trail. There is also an accompanying booklet with information about places along each hike for the boys to learn. The Troop was lucky enough to encounter battlefield re-enactors along the trail on each of their trips. Upon completion of all the requirements, each boy received a medal or patch.
The Troop camped at nearby campgrounds for the Gettysburg and Valley Forge trips. They were able to camp directly on the Antietam National Battlefield’s site for the Antietam and Harper’s Ferry trips.
Some of Troop 334’s highlights from the Historic Hike Campouts include hiking 1200 vertical feet for a stunning view of Harper’s Ferry and the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, having lunch on the rocks at Devil’s Den in Gettysburg, and running across the field towards the High Water Mark at the end of the Billy Yank hike to imagine what Pickett’s charge might have been like.

For over 10 years Troop and Pack 306, sponsored by St. Anne’s parish, have placed United States flags on the graves of veterans buried in Holy Savior cemetery. This May over thirty Scouts, Cubs, and their family members placed the flags on the graves. This year they were joined by 9 members of the Nam Knights of America motorcycle club. This was an excellent activity for the Scouts and Cubs resulting in about 100 hours of community service hours.
