Newsletter Term 2 Week 6 Wednesday 6th June 2018 Notes from Mr Sands: Tēnā rā koutou, Hello to everyone. You may be aware of the nationwide crisis in recruiting and retaining teachers. While there are many more children coming into the school system, there are not enough new teachers being trained. Urgent and significant changes are needed to ensure that the teaching profession can attract the people it needs and to ensure class sizes do not start to increase. On Tuesday 26th June, the teachers from this school will be attending a NZEI Te Riu Roa paid union meeting regarding the Kua Tae Te Wā - It’s Time campaign. The campaign aims to free teachers to teach and principals to lead, by getting the additional support and staff that schools need. The meetings will allow our teachers to discuss how the Ministry of Education has responded to changes that the union is seeking. Our teaching staff are members of NZEI and legally entitled to attend this meeting. The teachers will be leaving school on Tuesday 26th June, to attend their paid union meeting which starts at 2pm. I strongly encourage parents to make arrangements to pick their child(ren) up from school by 1.00pm on Tuesday 26th June. If you are unable to pick your children up then, please advise us so that your children can be supervised until 2.50p.m. I appreciate that this creates some inconvenience for families. However, I encourage you to support your teachers as they strive to achieve the changes which will safeguard quality education for all children and ensure we make teaching an attractive profession for graduates. Anyone who may need help with arrangements should contact the office. A warm welcome to Amanda, Kaitlan, and Olivia Harvey who started at Midhirst School today. We have Ash Bellamy, Eli Toma, Jessica and Sophie Paterson starting in the next 7 days. With the number of junior children in Kāhui class we will be looking at transitioning our year 3 students into Panitahi. This means our year 5 students in Panitahi will be moving into Kaitake class. All the Year 3 students will be in Panitahi and all the year 5 students will be in Kaitake. Jones Cup has been set for the 25th June. We have 2 netball and 2 rugby teams (1 intermediate and 1 senior). We still need managers for the rugby teams. The rugby teams will be practicing each day during lunchtime. Due to the weather those playing will need a change of clothes and a mouthguard. If they don’t they will not practice. This week I am meeting with other principals to look into the possibility of having Technology - Hard Materials at Stratford High School in 2019. This will be a 1 term session as the rest of the year we will deliver technology for our students at Midhirst School. This Friday we have Jacqui Sharp working with our teachers with Digital Technologies. This is to improve the writing achievement in our school. The annual debating dates have been set for 3rd July at the High School. This year there is a change of venue due to the number of students participating. Are there any community members interested in finding out more about the role of the BOT (Board of Trustees)? If so we have a training evening on Tuesday 12th June 4.30 p.m. - 6.30p.m. in the school library. Please come along and have a listen and join in with discussions. We have Paula Cull a representative from NZSTA (New Zealand School Trustees Association). We will also have a few nibbles. Aku mihi rā ... Newsletter Term 2 Week 6 Wednesday 6th June 2018

Notes from Mr Sands:

Tēnā rā koutou, Hello to everyone.

News from the Classrooms Kāhui:

Kia Ora everyone! We hope that you have all had a wonderful Queens Birthday weekend. This week Julie will be away Tuesday and Wednesday and so we will have Donna Taunt in on Tuesday and Kim Chadwick in on Wednesday. This week we welcome 4 new students to Kāhui Class- Jessica, Sophie, Olivia and Eli. We hope that you love being a part of Midhirst School and Kāhui Class! Over the next few weeks Kāhui Class will be using our creativity and imagination skills to create our own imaginary worlds. We will be writing about our imaginary worlds and creating an item for our class pet day art. We can't wait to see what our students create! Congratulations to our assembly award winners last week - Mikyla, Nevaeh, Jack, Paige and Harper V for making a great start in Kāhui Class and Maleki and Lochlyn for amazing progress in their reading and writing. Have a lovely week everyone!

Julie Anderson and Caitlyn Moratti

Panitahi: Kia ora everyone, I hope you have all had a wonderful long weekend! Panitahi class would like to welcome Kaitlin Harvey who started in our class on

Tuesday. Kaitlin has made a great start and I am very proud of how helpful and friendly everyone has been towards her. The virtue we are working on in Panitahi at the moment is Tolerance. This is about using our “ignoring muscles” when others are not making the best choices and managing our reactions to each other so that we are using kindness, forgiveness and patience with each other. We are continuing our Topic focus of Mounga Taranaki over the next few weeks and students are starting to write a self directed information report based on the research they did at Puke Ariki. The retelling of the legend of Mounga Taranaki narratives will be going up onto our class website soon, check it out: https://sites.google.com/midhirst.school.nz/team-panitahi/home

Many Thanks, Wendy McKenna

Kaitake: We hope everyone had a really great long weekend. Many Kaitake students did and have returned to school super tired and

yawning constantly. Last Friday nine students from our class went to S.P.S. and competed in the non-competitive part of a Rippa Rugby competition. All nine thoroughly enjoyed the event and were happy to get into the semi-finals. Kaitake Class liked having mufti day on Friday especially not having to wear their school uniform. They thought the cupcakes were divine. Everyone enjoyed having Mrs Taunt and completing their observation drawing of some recycling objects and writing acrostic poem relating to their drawing.

Students of the week: Jade Bright for overcoming obstacles in her learning path and Blayke for time management and self directed learning. Written by Kaitake Class Students and Wendy McGregor

Paritutu: Congratulations seniors, Week 5 was amazing! Thank you to all parents that helped make our second York Road Loop Track walk

successful. Thank you to those parents/whānau who came to our Assembly last week, the students and I love sharing what we have been learning with you. Parents please support your child, they need to complete their Home Learning every night Monday to Thursday to avoid falling too far behind in their learning. All tasks are started in class and students know how to complete them, many Year 7’s are not achieving as they could and sadly have to make up the work in their lunchtimes. Your support and assistance would be greatly appreciated. Each group for Technology has organised what items they will need to bring to turn our ‘Food to Plate’ unit into a reality. Group 2 needs to bring their food items by 12 June and cooking utensils etc by 13 June in preparation for cooking on Thursday 14 June. Group 1 needs to bring their food items by 26 June and cooking utensils etc by 27 June in preparation for cooking on Thursday 28 June. Have a fantastic week. Colleen Tett
