NED at North-A Wonderful Show!
We were very fortunate last Friday to see the NED
performance in our school hall. Seattle born,
presenter, Keith was captivating in his presentation;
rolling out some magnificent magic and yo-yo tricks,
whilst delivering a fantastic message for one and all.
And that message is simple…….
‘To be a champion person you need to:
Never give up
Encourage others
Do your best
If our students, and indeed ourselves, can carry that
simple mantra through life, then the world has got to
be a better place!
As part of the agreement to host the show FREE of
charge, yo-yos will be on sale all this week. They
range in cost from $8 to $20 and the quality is
excellent.
Having not spun a yo-yo for 30 odd years, your
principal amazingly was still able to: walk the dog,
‘round the world and forward pass. Next week, he’s
hoping to ‘rock the baby’.
P&C Meeting-Next Tuesday
The next meeting of the school’s
P&C will be held in the staffroom at
6:30pm, next Tuesday. All welcome!

FROM 3/4H
…. We ran into the tent, screaming. I looked out a
little hatch and I saw someone, or something, in a
black coat. The thing lay on the ground, next to the
blazing fire.
Very descriptive sentence structure from Lucy
Pitt
… Suddenly, we heard a frightening noise. It sounded
like something splashing in the water and yelping.
Troy got his fishing knife out.
Fred said, “if we had a torch, we could see what it
is.”
Troy and I went up to see what it was. It was just a
unicorn stuck in a log on the water.
Some imaginative thinking from Brodie Barlow
…. Next minute, we heard a wild noise.
Willie said, “what was that?”
I said, “it must be a deer.”
We hooked up a spotlight and shone it onto the river.
Wally screamed out loud….. By Ryder Osborne
….. Suddenly, we smelt something weird. It smelt like
a rotten banana. We knew what it was. It was a tip in
the middle of the forest.
It was time to go to bed. When we were in bed we
heard a noise. It was freaky. It sounded like a bear
and a monkey together. It got louder and louder and
louder. Then, a dark shadow appeared on the tent…..
Some nice ideas and use of similes from Reagan
Behsman
…. Will heard a noise. He said that it sounded like
someone with soaked shoes stomping along. We all
went to look behind the bush. Standing there, was
this massive, dark, green giant with a big wooden
club. He ran at us and tried to smash us to pieces.
We ran to the river and jumped in. Luckily, he
couldn’t swim, so he ran off.
Suddenly, this big crab jumped out of the water. It
had two big claws and heaps of tiny claws. It had the
word,MERLWICK, scarred onto its shell…..
Some clever ideas from Max Caruso
WINSTON’S WEIRD DAY
“Yo! Bob! Let’s tell spooky stories,” said Winston.
“But… but…” started Bob.
“Are you scared?” Said Winston.
“I’m fine,” said Bob, looking afraid.
“Once upon a time….” Began Winston, and then he
was interrupted by a screeching noise. It was so
horrific, it sounded like nails scraping on a
chalkboard. Bob jumped.
“What was that?”
“How should I know?” Replied Winston in a whiny
voice.
Winston grabbed the flashlight and walked towards
where the noise was coming from. Bob followed.
Next to the river there was a forest and that was
where the noise came from. Slowly, Bob and Winston
edged towards the forest.
“Ssssss! Grrr! Mmmmm!” There was the noise again.
Winston turned on the flashlight and pointed it at
the creature in front of them. It had blue skin and
green tentacles. It had 8 eyes and rotted teeth.
Before they knew it, Bob and Winston had turned
around and were running for the river.
Wait! The creature began running in the opposite
direction.
“Winston! Wake up!” Said a voice.
At that instant, Winston woke up and realised it was
a dream.
“Winston! You will be late for soccer!” Said his mum.
Winston got out of bed and went off to soccer.
When he got there, he saw something out of the
corner of his eye……… A tentacle!

THIS WEEK’S WRITING BLITZ TASK Students in classes’ 1/2R, 3/4H, 4/5HB and 6S
had the following writing task: You and you friends are having a great time, camping by a river. It’s night and the fire is blazing. Suddenly, a frightening

…..”Ahhhhhhh!” I started screaming.
All of the girls woke up as well, because they had a
nightmare too. I asked them what happened in their
nightmares. They all had the same nightmare as me.
Or, was the nightmare real?...
An amazing coincidence from Peta Thomas
One night, Ben and I went camping at the river and
we heard a noise. It was coming from everywhere
and it was coming towards us. It was getting closer
and closer. Whatever was making the noise was
pushing the trees down.
We saw a green thing. It looked weird…..
Bad luck for Ben and the writer,Wally Hughes
….. “Oh no!” Said Mollie. “It’s even closer now!”
“Boo!” Said my little sister Skylan. “I have been
trying to scare you.”
I got really cranky and chased my sister into a chook
shed, because she is so scared of chickens…
An interesting development from Tahlia Johnstone
…. Suddenly they heard a strange noise coming from
the tent.
“What’s that noise, Andy?” Asked Terry.
“I don’t know,” Terry replied.
“Are you scared, Terry?” Asked Andy.
“Who me?”…..
A good combination of speech and descriptions
from Mollie Maher
FROM 1/2R
I was camping with my mum and dad, and my sisters
and brothers. We were at the river and we got to
eat marshmallows. Then, we went to bed.
We heard a noise and it sounded like a wolf.
“Wooooo!”
I finally got back to sleep, but I kept hearing the
howling. I was sick of it. So, I got out of the tent
and when I did the wolf showed his teeth. I ran back
into the tent.
I was so frightened. I was puffing and panting. I was
so scared. Mum said, “what are you doing?”….
Excerpt from Grace Clark
One morning, I woke up in my tent, after a beautiful
night’s sleep. After that, I got dressed in my
camping top. It says, CAMPING, with a little picture
of a fire on it.
I thought camping was getting a little boring, when
all of a sudden it struck me. I should invite my
friends to come and camp with me.
I started to text my friends, but I remembered
that I needed to start the fire before they came
over…
Great start by Samara Watson
I am a caveman and I live in a cave. The cave is dark
because it is night time. I made a fire and the cave
lit up. Then, I could see the whole cave.
I was hunting for a baby triceratops. I heard a
roar…..
Exciting beginning from Max Hillier
Once, in Darwin I heard a snap. I turned on the light
and it was a crocodile and it was snapping. This kept
happening over and over again. I was annoyed so I
went out into the river and punched the crocodile in
the face. It died. Then, we ate it for dinner.
A crocodile tale from Oliver Donaldson
On Friday I was camping with dad, mum, Tom, Emma,
Rory and Harry. When we were asleep Harry said,
“what is that spooky noise?”
We all walked to the river. We saw a saltwater
crocodile. We all screamed our heads off. We ran
away. Its jaws were snapping. It snapped us up a
tree. We stayed up there for nearly 5 hours.
The crocodile climbed up the tree. We flinged him
away and we never saw him again.
By Charlie McCallum
I was camping at night and I heard a noise in a tree.
After that I roasted marshmallows. Then I heard
the noise again.
I got my spear. I went up to the tree and there was
a bear in the tree. I ran to my tent. The bear ripped
the tent…..
An unbearable story from Matthew Pitt
DNPS Newsletter Page 6
One day, Jim, Stephen and I went camping on a
tropical island.
Jim was getting the tent ready. Stephen was getting
some nice fish, and I was getting some wood for the
fire.
At night, we had roasted fish with some veggies.
“This is fun!” I said.
“Yep!” Said Jim and Stephen.
Then, we heard a noise. It sounded like 100 monkeys.
“Let’s go and see that noise!” I said.
“After that we can have marshmallows,” Jim said…..
Great use of speech by Jack Brown
FROM 4/5HB
I’m in the car with my family, driving to camp by the
river. It’s so boring. I’m just listening to my music on
my phone. I got nothing to do. The worst part is, I
have to go with mum and dad, and my psycho
brother, Thomas. I feel totally bummed. I’d rather
be at school than this. And, I suck at school! I just
don’t get maths and spelling.
At last, we get to the campsite. We set up the tent
and campfire, and soon enough, it’s dark.
We have dinner (my brother eats off the floor), and
I get into my sleeping bag that I’ve had since kindie,
and I try to go to sleep.
A few hours later I wake up and check my watch. It’s
12:35. I’m about to doze off when I hear a, CRASH!
BANG! SMASH! I don’t even move. I think it’s a giant
bear, or a tiger. I just lie there, stunned. Then I
move. I need to find out what it was.
I walk out of the tent and onto the sand. I take one
step forward, and then, CRACK!
“Damn!” I mumble. “Stupid stick!”
I keep moving and I walk to the half glowing
campfire. Then, I hear the noises again. I can see
something moving. It’s coming straight for me. I
start running, but it catches up fast. Its tongue is
flashing in the moonlight.
Suddenly, it jumps on me and my face buries in the
sand. I flip over and see my brother on top of me.
He says, “out for a late-night swim?”
By Olivia Manzin
Back in 1972, my friends and I went to a campsite on
the Moodie Islands. It had one airport and a ton of
campsites. There was a massive river that separated
two out of the three islands. The sea separated the
third island.
Later, when my friends and I went to bed we heard a
twig breaking. We looked outside. We saw a
murderer! He started chasing us. We ran as fast as
we could. It was terrifying. He had blood all over
him.
He caught up to us. He grabbed me!....
Excerpt by Luke Moodie
N and I are camping by a river in the White Forest.
We had made a fire and I was sitting on the ground,
gazing at it as it was burning away merrily.
Suddenly it grew colder. I started shivering. I
looked around at N. He had his arms wrapped around
himself.
Then, a scream came from nearby. N jerked his head
up with a jolt.
“Did you hear that, Amy?” He said.
I slowly nodded my head, too scared to speak.
“Sh..should we check it out?” I stammered.
N nodded his head. We stood up and slowly walked
towards the river.
When we got to the river, we heard the scream
again.
“Are you sure about this?” I muttered.
N only shrugged.
Another classy excerpt from Imogen Gray
One night, mum and dad and their daughter Kelly
were going camping. Little did they know that Kelly
had invited some people over, but not to camp with
them. She had invited them to party with her.
No sooner after arriving at the campsite, nightfall
was slipping in. So, mum and dad told Kelly to go to
bed. Kelly didn’t want to. She stayed up until dad and
Mum went to sleep….
An interesting beginning from Shyanne Smith
DNPS Newsletter Page 7
“Arrrgh!”
Sophie and I had just finished setting up camp when
an earsplitting scream filled the night. I whipped my
head around to see what it was. I couldn’t see
anything. I turned back around. Sophie was gone. I
shivered at the thought at what might have
happened to her. What if the wicked lollipop man of
the East had got her?
I knew that Sophie didn’t believe in such nonsense,
nor did she believe in the other evil things from the
south, north or west. Suddenly, the world spun and
everything went black.
I woke up chained to a post. I could see Sophie in
the arms of….. You guessed it!... The evil lollipop man
of the East.
So the story goes, he used to have a candy shop
filled with lollipops, but one day he went to fight for
his home country, Germany in the war, and he was
reported M.I.A. (missing in action). Then, children
started disappearing all over Australia, but only on
the eastern sides of towns. Hence, the story of the
evil lollipop man of the East began to spread. It was
said that there was a secret word to make him stop,
but nobody knew what it was.
I tried to wriggle out of the chains, but I nicked my
thumb on the wooden pole. I looked at my thumb. It
was bleeding. I didn’t like blood. I usually faint at
the sight of it.
Once again, the world went black….
A very creative story excerpt by Kira Dickie
“Hoot! Hoot!” Went the owl in the dark, quiet night.
The tent was swaying in the subtle wind. My friends
and I were cooking sausages on the flaring fire.
Suddenly, SPLASH! Will jumped. And then
everything went silent for a moment.
Sophie, Olivia and Kira whispered all at once, “where
are we?”
I didn’t say anything, but to be honest, I had no idea.
SPLASH! There it was again.
We all flocked to the tent…..
Some superb word use by Elena Mulham
Bang! Bang! That was the sound of my hammer
hitting the wall.
My cousins; Claudia and Eliza, and myself, were
camping out at our old shearer’s hut. We were fixing
it up. We had decided that we would get more work
done on the hut, if we stayed at the hut, instead of
going back to the house all the time. Even though we
know every corner of the hut, it is still quite scary.
There is no electricity. Eliza had tried to patch up
the broken windows, so no insects could get in.
There is only one bed and an old couch with no
pillows, inside the hut. When it got dark we all
jumped into bed. Eliza and I slept on the floor.
I woke up, really needing to go to the toilet. I woke
up Eliza and Claudia, and we all went and did a bushy
near the river. As I was going, I heard an almighty
scream. Quickly, I pulled my pants up, and ran over
to see what had happened…..
A nice set-up from Sophie Murray
One scary night, Bill was having a dream when he was
camping by the river. In the dream, Bill heard a noise
that went, “honkkkkk!”
When he woke up, he heard the sound again, but he
did not know what it was. Bill ran outside his tent
and sat still in his chair, trying to hunt out the
strange and deafening sound. “Over there!” He said.
He walked towards the strange sound.
In the distance he could see a strange thing. As he
got closer to it, it started to look like some sort of
machine.
Bill brushed through the spiky, pointy bushes and
now he could see the strange thing. It was a truck-
lots of truck! They were about to start a big race….
Well written excerpt by Will Bull
I am with my friends in the bush. We are camping
alone. Well, we have each other.
Suddenly, at 2:00 AM in the morning I hear a
scatter in the distance. Izza got up and saw a
shadow of a dog, or maybe a wolf. This was not
surprising; after all, we are in the wild.
Then, I see a black wolf and I faint.
Izza and Sara throw a bucket of water on me. I
wake up suddenly…..
Great start from Chloe Emery
DNPS Newsletter Page 8
…. I sat on the log that dad had moved earlier.
“Aaaahhh!”
What? Where? I wondered anxiously. I ran over the
place where the noise was coming from. It was my
dad. He was in the toilet. He had constipation….
A different take on the frightening noise from
Harry Dudley
.... All of a sudden, there was a whoosh of air. It was
earsplitting. Then, a tree fell down, and standing in
front of them was Big Foot.
They ran for their lives and climbed a tree. But, the
monster started shaking the tree, and Nick fell
out….
Excerpt from Tom Charlton
… They walked out of their 4x4 diesel Toyota and
said directly to my face, “you’re pathetic!”
That night, their car rolled into the river. Don’t ask
me why….
Nice sentence from Jack Gavel
Suddenly, a frightening noise splits the air.
“Aaaahhhh!”
The girls’ hearts popped out and back in. They were
so scared. They both felt as if a worm was trickling
down the legs of their pants…
Some nice use of language by Shae Learmonth
My family and I are on our way to a river called, The
Big One. The only reason we are going there is
because my dad won three nights at The Big One in a
competition. We’re going by bus because my mum and
dad don’t have enough money for a car.
All the way there, my brother kept on saying, “are
we there yet? Are we there yet?” It was so
annoying.
Two hours later, we finally arrived. I started to get
my stuff. I told dad that I’m going for a walk.
When I was walking, I heard a really loud, screaming
noise. I went to get a closer look and when I did I
saw a flower-an orange flower. I went to pick it up…
Interesting start from Charlee Pitt
.... Harry and Bob went across the river to get
firewood. When the fire got low it became very
dark. Harry and Bob took a lot of time. I called out
again, but no one answered.
I heard this noise-a weird noise! It didn’t sound like
an owl, wild birds or even a fox.
Harry and Bob were still not back. I was getting
hungry. We had sausages to cook, but with no light
cooking them was impossible.
I heard the noise again, and again and again…
Angus Knox cooking up a frightening tale
PING! PONG! PING!
“What was that, Ted?” I said in a curious voice.
Ted replied that he was pretty sure it was the pegs
to the tent.
Suddenly, the tent fell down. Then, swish the fire
went out.
Now, we were getting scared. Luckily, we had a lamp
in the tent. So I got it out and turned it on.
Cautiously, I walked out of the tent, leaving Ted
behind.
I saw my little sister’s hair dryer on the ground. I
called out her name, but no-one replied. I looked on
the ground again, and I saw a big, furry shadow. I
screamed and ran.
I scrambled up a tree and tried to stay as still as I
could. The tree rattled.
Then, I saw the shadow again, and it started
climbing up the tree.
I jumped out of the tree and landed on the ’monster’.
I looked down at the figure, and it was my dad.
I yelled and screamed at him. Ted woke up. He was
scared out of his wits when he saw me on top of my
dad.
I looked up and saw the rest of my family laughing
their heads off. I looked back down at dad and he
was in his bear costume.
