Update on Revalidation and Appraisal from the General Medical Council

The GMC is getting ready to introduce revalidation across the UK from early

December 2012. They want the majority of licensed doctors to revalidate by end

March 2016.

In Scotland, 20% of doctors will be invited to revalidate in year 1 with 40% in

years 2 and 3 respectively. Boards have started to write to those doctors in their

area who are in the first 20%.

To revalidate, doctors need to have a regular appraisal that is based on the GMC

core guidance, Good Medical Practice and covers the whole of their practice:http://www.gmc-uk.org/Good_Medical_Practice_2012___Draft_for_consultation.pdf_45081179.pdf

Doctors will also need to collect supporting information for their appraisal and

revalidation, one core element of which is CPD:http://www.gmc-uk.org/Supporting_information.pdf_42293176.pdf

The Scottish Online Appraisal Resource (SOAR) has introduced its new online

appraisal forms in line with Good Medical Practice and revalidation:http://www.scottishappraisal.scot.nhs.uk/

For regular updates on revalidation progress please see GMC website link: www.gmc-uk.org

INTER-PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Pharmacy

The Partnership and NES Pharmacy have been piloting inter-professional

workshops in 2012. A Maintaining Mindful Prescribing Workshop in March was

attended by GPs and Pharmacists throughout the West of Scotland. Attendees

found discussing clinical topics with other health professionals a very useful

learning experience and suggested there was value in delivering more

workshops in this way.

Following this successful pilot, the Partnership has allowed a small number of

pharmacists to attend their workshops. Similarly, NES Pharmacy is now allowing

five GPs to attend a select number of their educational workshops with the aim of

encouraging GPs and Pharmacists to learn together around a number of clinical

subjects.

Five places are available to GPs on each of the following clinical workshops:
