The Pastor’s Corner
Submitted by Leonard Markham
The Bible says in I Chronicles 16:12, “Remember the wonders He has done, His miracles, and the judg-ments He pronounced…” What is a miracle? That gets real confusing to people sometimes. Let me give you a simple definition. A miracle is an event in which the only explanation is God. A miracle is when God gets involved. So when a baby is born, that’s a miracle. The only explanation for that is God. When someone finds hope, that’s a miracle. When a guy mutes Sports Center to listen to his wife…miracle! The only explanation is God; would you agree with that, ladies? A miracle! To be more serious, when a dead relationship is brought back to life, that’s a miracle. God does miracles every day. Yeah, we’ve got tough lives. Things don’t always go right. We all have struggles and trials to go through, but God says don’t just think about the struggles, remember the miracles. You need to hold on to them to live the kind of life I want you to live in this world where it’s not so easy to live sometimes. We’re not in heaven yet, so you’ve got to remember the miracles while you’re on this earth. They’ll get you through. They’ll give you the strength you need. Why does God do miracles? Why does God do these kinds of things? To show off? No. God doesn’t have to show off. He doesn’t need us to be impressed with Him to feel better about Himself. Aren’t you glad about that? God doesn’t have to show off. The reason that God does miracles is to show us His character. He does miracles to show us what He’s like. Deuteronomy 7:9, “Remember that the Lord is the only God and that He is faithful.” That’s one of the things miracles remind us—that He is faithful. He is a God that we can depend on. We have about 42 years of miracles around here at Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church. I have to tell you, and I speak for all our Pastors, staff, and leadership, the greatest miracle to us is not how God led us to pay cash for the 10.2 acres of property the new church facility occupies. It is not even the amount of money given to the building campaign and the budget. It is not the complete renovation of the Peavine Road property with 8,000 square feet of additional space to be used for education purposes and other kinds of meetings. The greatest miracles in the 42-year history of this fellowship are the lives that have been changed because of the power of the Gospel to change a person’s life. Every one of these miracles shows God’s faithfulness. For us, the greatest miracle is seeing a life that has been changed by Christ’s love. If God has changed your life, that is His greatest miracle. Only God can do that. Only where God shows up can that happen. The last year we had 38 people baptized and 39 other people join our church. Just recently, for three consecutive Sunday nights, new Christians were baptized. This last Sunday, August 18, four new people joined our church to worship God and serve Christ with us. And, God brought us little Megan Smith, which is another miracle. Remember, Sunday, August 18, we had 79 children in Sunday School from Nursery to the 12th grade in high school. We had 33 Youth from the 7th – 12th grades. We had 236 in Sunday School and 378 in worship. Every one of these numbers represents a person who is a miracle. God is changing our lives one by one by one. That is the greatest miracle of all. We have many people who are coming to First Baptist Church. The miracle to us is not about how many people come to church; the miracle is that every individual who comes, God is working to change each life. I look at the Sunday Night classes and rooms filled with people wanting to grow in their Christian faith. The other Sunday night we had 125 adults in Discipleship classes, not counting the children and youth. We have had 18 and 19 each Sunday night in the Lap 1 class. We will be starting a new cycle of classes on September 22nd, and we would love for you to attend one of these classes. For the first time, we are offering Lap 4, and Gary Kaufman will be teaching the class. What miracle has God worked in your life? You know that God did it. If you have the time, write me a note and tell me about this miracle God has brought to your life. Thank you for your love, prayer and support to my life. You have carried me and encouraged me during some difficult days. I love each of you, and I am honored to serve with you at First Baptist Church.

The Campaign Commitment Team… His Vision… Our Mission...
Blue Line = $22,880.00 Monthly Campaign Commitment
A Message from the Stewardship/Finance Committee…
The electric and gas costs for both of our buildings continue to be much higher than budgeted.
Through the first eight bills for 2013 we will have exceeded the 12 month budget by $13,890. An
energy audit has taken place and we are reviewing their report and recommendations. Soon the
parking lot lights will go off late in the evening and only the lights that shine on the building will
remain on which will help. We need everyone’s help to conserve energy where ever possible and
to only spend what is absolutely necessary. Thank you for your help in this matter. Randy Ander-
sen 335-0265
How Great is our God...our building fund continues to grow. Our giving in July was $15,554.00 which
brings our total to date to $761,397.41. It is amazing how our commitment to this campaign continues.
If we can meet the minimum monthly goal of $22,881.00 (or surpass this amount) we can achieve over
$1,000,000.00 for God's church home in Fairfield Glade. We are in our third and final year of our com-
mitment to God's new church and are still going strong. Please continue to pray and give thanks to God
during the last 9 months of our commitment. The graph below shows our giving over the past 6
months. Let's keep those bars going up as we continue in our faithful giving. We know with all of us
working and praying together we will be able to accomplish His Vision...Our Mission. We are giving from
the heart for God's glory. Your commitment team members are Roger & Janie Fleming, Joe & Christina
Boggio, Bob & Deb Carlson and Randy & Annette Johnson.
A Thank you…
Nancy and I would like to express to you, our church family, our deepest gratitude and thanks for all of you expressions of concern during my surgery and two hospital stays. Your prayers, calls and cards were so uplifting and made some difficult days easier to bear. All the glory belongs to the Lord for his blessings and answered prayers lifted up by you. May the Lord bless each one of you. Jim Settles

Have You Marked Your Calendar for the Annual Church Picnic?????
Have you marked your calendar?? Our Annual Church Picnic will be on Sunday, September 15 from 1-5:30PM at Cumberland Mountain State Park, Pavilion 1. Once you enter the park, just follow the signs and balloons to the exact location.
We’re looking for a great turnout. Games are being planned for all ages! Come prepared to have a good time. Please note, tennis (including all equipment) will be available. However, if you want to play tennis, NO open-toed shoes permitted!
We’ll eat at 1PM. Chicken, beverage, and table service will be provided. Bring a covered dish that will serve 12-15 people. It’s always wonderful to sample all the goodies that are being shared.
Once our bellies are full, be prepared to be “wowed” by a local Gospel group, followed by more fun and games. It will be a wonderful time to interact with all ages and become better acquainted with someone (older or younger)! We’ll wrap up the day with a devotional by Pastor Leonard.
There are sign-up sheets in the lobby. Please enter your name, the number that will attend, and the dish you are planning to share. We don’t want anyone to go hungry and we need to plan ac-cordingly! Furthermore, if you need a ride, be sure to sign up for transportation on our church bus.

Hodges Ministry... Submitted by Pat Harris
We just got back from the August trip. Nine volunteers went, and we carried with us
over 30 boxes of Bibles, Sunday School books, and other Christian literature. If you weren’t there, you missed a wonderful opportunity to serve the Lord.
God has blessed us in so many ways, so what would it hurt you to give Him three days of service back? We only have two more trips scheduled for this year.
We leave the church at 7:00 AM on a Thursday, traveling together on the church bus to Decatur, AL. We work a half day on Thursday, all day on Friday and then a half day on
Saturday, returning to FFG by 5:00PM. We share Christian fellowship while working for the Lord and following His com-mand to spread the “Good News” to all nations.
Our next trip is scheduled for October 24,25, and 26. Sign up sheet is on the sign up table across from the library. The last trip of the year will be December 12, 13 and 14.
For more information call Pat Harris 707-0539.

Samaritan's Purse: Operation Christmas Child
It's that time of year to starting think about collecting items to fill shoe boxes that will be forwarded to Franklin Graham's Op-eration Christmas Child. The shoe boxes are then shipped to different parts of the world with a gospel message for children.
Samaritan's Purse will be providing shoe boxes this year, but feel free to use your own shoe boxes. Shoe boxes and labels will be available around the middle of September.
We will be collecting them October 16th-November 15th. So start early. Let's make this a big success for the children.
Remember Nov 15th is the dead line. Mary Box & Pam Freeman
From the Evangelism/Outreach Team …
Make new friends, keep the old - one is silver, the other is gold. Joining with the First Impressions team to welcome our guests, we are inviting anyone who would be interested in visiting those who have visited our church, to attend a brief training meeting on Thursday, September 5, at 4:30 p.m. in the conference room. The procedure we want to ensue is: someone visits our church on a
given Sunday. A couple would then deliver a goody bag with church information on that Sunday afternoon between 2:30 and 5 p.m. We have been doing this for several weeks with very good results. Unfortunately we have a limited number of volunteers. If you’d like to be a part of this very worthwhile ministry, come to this meeting where there will be some procedural training. We will create a rotation system, hopefully resulting where no one couple will be going out too often. You do not have to be a couple. We
will pair you up. Join us and be blessed. Any questions, call John Allan at (615) 838-1449 cell phone or 287-0350 home.
Memory Loss Care Group Mark you calendars for September 12th; 11:00 AM for the first meeting of the Memory Loss Care Group. This Care Group is being formed to help those who are facing memory loss and coping with various forms of dementia. Meetings will be held monthly at First Baptist Church, Room 157.
Amanda Barlow, area director of Alzheimer’s Tennessee will be facilitating the September 12th and October 3rd meetings. Helpful infor-mation will be provided as well as question and answer time. Opportunity will be given to share information and provide support whether a caregiver or someone with early memory loss.
Under the umbrella of dementia there are 70 different aspects or diseases affecting the brain. So if you are concerned about a loved one, neighbor or friend who maybe affected by memory loss, join us or invite that friend or neighbor who could benefit from this group.
If you have questions please contact Margaret Brant 931-484-9747 or e-mail [email protected]

PRESCHOOL DEPARTMENT Submitted by Joan Brining
It was an exciting day Sunday, August 18, for six of our Preschool Sunday School children. The children – (from left) Skyler Harville, Eli Davenport, Allie Botbyl, Jayden Faalafua, Tate Seiber, and Caleb Powers (no photo) – were promoted from the Kindergarten Sunday School Class to Grade 1. Each child was presented a Promotion Certificate and a large NIV Bible imprinted with his/her name. This is the largest Kindergarten class to promote to Grade 1. For the past several months, Bill Putnam has been teaching the Kindergarten children the books of the Bible to help prepare them for Grade 1. The children have matured and grown in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Pre-school Teaching Staff is so proud of them; we will pray for their continued spiritual growth.

September Book Review:
Submitted by Joyce Gover
First, I would like to thank those who bring to my attention books that they feel would benefit the congregation. The Hole in our Gospel, written by Richard Stearns, President of World Vision, and published in 2010 by Thomas Nelson, was recommended by Bonnie Peterson and is in fact such a book! Dr. Bob Pierce, the founder of World Vision, the largest relief organization in the history of the world, once penned these words. “Let my heart be broken with the things that break the heart of God.” This should be the prayer of each one of us as Christ’s followers.
Kay Warren, from Saddleback Church, accurately states that Rich has passionately and persuasively directed this book at Christians in the Western world who are all too often self-absorbed and blind to the desperate plight of those in need not only of the gospel but of the very essentials of life.
The “hole” to which he refers is the relative lack by Christians in general in using their time, talents, and resources to help the needy, espe-cially those in third world countries. He identifies what he feels is a sense of detachment and concern on our part, associated with an unwillingness to “get involved”.
Rich’s personal journey itself also challenges us. Born in relative poverty, and the product of a broken home, he determined to be finan-cially successful. After graduation from Cornell University, he quickly moved up the corporate ladder to wind up as CEO of Lenox, maker of high end table-ware. But God invaded his comfortable life and changed his priorities.
The book is replete with stories of transformed lives and living conditions and the ordinary people God used to bring these about. Also included are some startling statistics; e.g., “the total amount of money given to all Protestant mission agencies around the world in
2009 was $5 billion dollars. By contrast, in the same year, Americans spent $705 billion on entertainment and $65 billion on jewelry. At the end of the book, Rich provides a number of suggestions to help us get involved, not only in World Vision, but in other ministries and
organizations whose emphasis is helping the poor. This may include such items as providing clean water, health care, and education. I pray that through this book, our hearts will be softened, our vision enlarged, our resolve to make a difference strengthened, and our
purse strings loosened.

Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity Needs Assessment
Needs in the Restore- We are in need of cashiers, pricers and sorters (for incoming donations), loaders/movers to help
load furniture (for customer purchases in the Restore) and Drivers/helpers to pick-up donations in the community ( Habi-tat has their own closed boxed truck for use. A special license in not needed to operate)
Construction - Now that we have started building, we are in need of builders at the construction site. Construction experi-
ence is not necessary.
Need for Homeowner Classes- Our Habitat homeowners are required to do a minimum of 50 hours of self-improvement hours before the completion and close date of their home. We offer classes of self-improvement such as mortgage
classes, good neighbor, financial counseling and home maintenance. There is a large need to expand the classes and knowledge offered to our new homeowners. We need volunteers and curriculum for the following classes: (these are just
some ideas. The goal is to break the cycle of poverty.) Wills, Homeowner Insurance, Marriage, Employment Skills, Nutri-
tion (how to eat healthy on a budget), Budget, Home Safety.
Committee Needs
Fundraising Committee-- Habitat for Humanity has usually 3 fundraisers every year to bring awareness to the community
about the need for decent, safe housing We need energetic people on the committee that can help plan and put together
fundraisers. New ideas for successful fundraisers are always needed.
Family Selection Committee- This committee reviews homeowner applications, interviews perspective homeowners, con-ducts a home visit and recommends homeowners to the Board of Director for approval.
Church Relations Committee- The goal of this committee is to establish relationships with local churches to support the
growth of Habitat for Humanity. Our goal is to educate the community about the need for adequate and affordable hous-ing and to ensure that habitat for Humanity is living out the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We are also in need of a bookkeeper for monthly reconciliation.
