Term 3 Week 9

NEWSLETTER

We have noticed lots of ladybirds visiting our sunflowers too. Kobe said “That’s good because they will eat the aphids off the leaves and keep the sunflowers healthy.” Taleah noticed that all the ladybirds visiting our sunflowers were yellow like the sunflowers were going to be. Keeleigh hypothesised if this was because they could camouflage with the sunflowers. We are currently researching whether only yellow ladybirds visit sunflowers. The children have been enthusiastically checking the sunflowers each morning and break time and reporting on their progress in class. Why don’t you take a look at our sunflowers in the school garden beds next time you are walking past!

Surf Rescue DayOn Tuesday, 13 and Wednesday 14, September the students will be learning about water safety and beach awareness. On Wednesday, 14 September the students are asked to come to school dressed in their best red and yellow colours with a gold coin donation for Surf Life Saving Australia. The canteen will also have healthy red and yellow food for sale.

Multi Sport Day for Students withDisabilities The NSW Department of Education is offering a sports day for students with disabilities. If you are interested please see the flyer on the notice board outside the front office.

K-1W Sunflower Update – We Have BudsLast term K-1W investigated the science unit “Growing Well”. This term we are putting into practise everything we learnt last term to grow and care for sunflowers from a seed. Our sunflowers have nearly reached the ‘flower’ stage of their development. This week the children were very excited to find that we had buds! We will be looking closely at these buds over the next few days as they grow bigger and gradually unfold to reveal a beautiful yellow sunflower.

Mrs Campbell donated a bunch of sunflowers that she found at the shop so we could see what the flowers would look like when they bloom. We completed observational drawings of the sunflowers and then used these drawings to create a scientific diagram that included the parts of a sunflower and what they need to grow. We have been recording the growth of our sunflowers with photos and are eagerly waiting for the ‘flower’ stage so we can put together a sequence of photos of the life cycle of our sunflowers.

The NSW Department of Education is offering a sports day for

students with disabilities. On the day students will be given the opportunity to

participate in a range of Individual and Team sports. Information will be available on the day, for students

wanting to continue in their new sport. On the Day school staff will receive

Term 3 Week 9

NEWSLETTER Things you can do to help your child: Think about how much time you will need to get a job done and plan enough time to get it done. Have set routines to help get things done on time. Have everything ready before you begin and put things back where they can be found after you finish. Discuss persistence and talk about giving effort and trying hard because the harder you try and the more effort you give the more successful you are likely to be. Talk to your child about being independent and how important it is to try new activities and to speak up even if your classmates think it’s silly or stupid. Do not think badly about yourself for making a mistake.

School Term DatesTerm 3 ends Friday, 23 September. Term 4 resumes Monday, 10 October.

You Can Do It!In the last 5 weeks we have talked about ways of thinking that help students to be successful and happy at school. We have looked at persistence, resilience, getting along, organisation and confidence. We are now looking at the 5 ways of thinking that stop students being happy and successful. They are (feeling very down, worry, procrastination, not paying attention and anger) This week we look at procrastination. This means that, even though you see the disadvantages of delaying, you put off doing tasks and chores because they are frustrating, boring or hard. You give up easily after having started something that is difficult or boring to do and you may rush to finish your work so that you can do fun things.Negative ways of thinking that lead to procrastination include:• I can’t be bothered - thinking that life should

always be fun and exciting and that I can’t stand it when things are frustrating, boring or uncomfortable.

• Having no goals - thinking that it’s pointless to have any goals in life.• Planning time poorly-thinking that it’s pointless to plan my time, thinking that things will some how get done. When approaching a chore or task you think, when is the latest I can start? • Needing to be perfect - thinking that I have to be successful in everything important I do and that it’s horrible when I’m not.• Needing approval - thinking that I need people to approve of what I do and that when they don’t, it’s the worst thing in the world.
