Protect Yourself from Scams

Every day, throughout Illinois fall prey to smooth-talking con artists who call them up and tell all kinds of convincing stories to get their money. The Office of the Illinois At-torney General wants you to know that it’s shrewd, not rude, to hang up the phone when a stranger asks you to send them money or give out your personal information.

The following are some common scams perpetrated against seniors.

IRS Scam Calls

Grandparent Scams

Prizes/Sweepstakes/Free Gift Scam

Home Improvement/Doorstep Scam

Charity Scam

Mortgage/Reverse Mortage Scam

Computer Tech Support Scam

Phishing/Spoofing Scam - Friendship/Sweetheart Scam

Bereavement Scam Contact the office for more descriptive information on these scams and other risks not mentioned.

PRECAUTIONS Just Hang Up when getting calls Do not open your door to anyone that you do not know Do not give out any personal information over the phone Do not send money to anyone that you do not know Report any incidences to the police National Do Not Call Registry If you haven’t already done so, consider placing your phone number on it. This will block most unwanted telemarketing calls. Once your number is on the registry, you’ll know that any telemarketer who does call you is probably up to no good. You can register your home phone or cell phone online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236) from the phone number you wish to register

Soliciting Alert

In recent issues, we have notified you of uninvited solicitors. We cannot stress enough the im-

portance of not allowing anyone to gain access to our buildings. In the past few weeks, we have

seen an increase of solicitors on property and more importantly in the buildings. The only way

these individuals can get in is either by someone letting them in or being followed in. Once

again, if you do not have an appointment or are not expecting anyone or if you do not know the

person behind you, DO NOT LET THEM IN THE BUILDING. This is not only for your safety and well being but also for the

other residents. Most importantly under no circumstances should you allow them into your unit.

IDENTITY THEFT

Carry only the ID and credit cards you need.

Don’t give personal information over the phone unless you initiated the call.

Don’t transmit personal information over the Internet unless it is a secure site, and don't reveal personal information in

emails or discussion forums. (secure site have an “s” in the website name. Example https:/xxxxxxxxx

Shred documents containing personal information before discarding.

Order your credit report every year from the three credit reporting agencies. By law you are entitled to one free re-

port a year from each of the agencies. Order your free report by calling 1-877322-8228 (TTY: 1-877-730-4104) or vis-

iting www.annualcreditreport.com.

Maintenance Corner - Just a few reminders

Check furnace filters for efficiency Pour drain cleaner down drains once a month to help in keeping drains clear Don’t forget to put your electronics in the recycling area and your recyclables in the recycle trash bin Be courteous to other residents and return carts right away to their designated areas so others can use them Moving pads—don’t forget to request the moving pads when moving items in and out Remember when moving furniture or boxes they must be brought in through the garages and not the front

door.

Blackberry Mojito Ingredients

5 each fresh blackberries

1 part white rum

6 each mint leaves

1/2 part simple syrup

1 part fresh lime juice

1 part crème de cassis

1 part club soda

FOR GARNISH: 1 sprig mint

1 each fresh blackberry speared with cocktail pick

Preparation 1. In a Collins glass, muddle mint leaves with blackberries

and simple syrup.

2. Add lime juice, rum and crème do cassis and stir to

combine.

1. Fill glass with ice, top with club soda, and stir to

combine.

Beef and Pork Sliders Ingredients 2 oz Butter

1 cup yellow onions thinly sliced

1 teaspoon white pepper

2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided

12 ozs (80/20) ground beef

12 ozs ground pork

1 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 cup equal parts mayonnaise and mustard

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 cup thinly shredded romained hearts

12 slices cheese of choice Directions In a saute pan over high heat, add the butter, onions, white pepper and 1 teaspoon salt, and cook over high heat until the butter has melted. Reduce the heat to medium and finish cooking the onions until slightly browned on the edges, 7 to 8 minutes. Mix the beef, pork, remaining 1 teaspoon salt, and black pep-per in a bowl. Do not over mix or the burger will be too tightly

bound. Portion the meat into 12 (2-ounce) balls, then flatten

the balls into patties about 2 1/2 inches round. Preheat a grill and grill the burgers for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F. Combine the mayonnaise-mustard mixture with the lemon juice and shredded romaine. Top the bottom bun with the dressed lettuce, a burger, some caramelized onions, and cheese of choice. Add the top bun and serve.

Poached Apricot Sundaes

Combine 2 cups dried apricots, 2 cups

water, 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 strip

lemon zest in a baking dish. Cover and

microwave 5 minutes. Let sit 5

minutes, then uncover and let cool.

Spoon over vanilla frozen yogurt and

sprinkle with candied walnuts
