From The Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
Crew from USS Emory S. Land visits Golden Bay Primary School
Golden Bay Primary School welcomed the opportunity to host service personnel from the United States
warship USS Emory S. Land, currently docked at HMAS Stirling Naval Base in Rockingham.
The crew members visited classrooms and provided an interesting insight in to their experiences aboard their
ship while serving their country. Golden Bay Primary School students prepared interesting questions to ask
the crew members and were really engaged while listening to their responses. Equally, the crew worked with
students in class activities designed specifically for their visit.
The school hosted an afternoon tea, with Australian Defence Force families from the school invited to attend.
This was a great opportunity for parents serving in our national forces to meet with their U.S. counterparts
and share experiences. Such visits foster Australian and U.S. relations.
A highlight of the day was a tabloid sports activity at the end of the visit. Golden Bay Primary School students
in year 4, 5 & 6 participated in a variety of sporting rotations alongside the U.S. Navy personnel. There was
plenty of friendly competition and the crew members and students were able to ‘join forces’ in five teams as
they moved around the tabloid stations (see photographs in this edition).
The students gained new insights by talking with the crew members about their experiences serving in the
U.S. Navy. The tabloid sports provided a fun-filled conclusion to a truly wonderful learning opportunity for our
Golden Bay Primary School young learners.
Parent Communication Protocol
The School Board met on 19 September. Minutes of School Board meetings can be found on our website.

Future Focused Learning
This term in Year 3 we have been focusing on the essential question ‘If trees could speak, what would their global story be?’ Our integrated unit focused strongly on the global concept of sustainability and explored the topic of deforestation. To understand this more, our students from Room 3.2 explain…
Deforestation is when people cut down trees. The problem is people are cutting down too many trees and animals homes are being destroyed. – April
Deforestation is people cutting down trees. Also, clearing land for towns, houses and parks. Deforestation is really serious because it is wrecking the environment. – Logan
Sadly, people are cutting down trees for money and furniture. The biggest reason people are cutting down trees is for land. – Shaun
There will be no oxygen if we cut down all of the trees. – Matilda
The Amazon rainforest is burning down right now and no one is doing anything about it! – Tahnee
If trees were gone we wouldn’t exist, they are important! – Skarlette
Through research, discussions and learning experiences, students identified that in our school paper waste is the biggest contributor to deforestation. Working in small groups, each group identified their teams ‘dream’, ranging from making people more aware of how much paper they use, reducing the amount of photocopying, paper free days and recycling paper more often. Check out some of our exciting projects that we are going to implement in our school!
Save Paper, Save Our Trees
Every time a class does not use paper for the day, they place a leaf on our school tree. The more leaves on the trees, the less paper our school is using. Come check it out located in the school library!
Let’s Recycle!
We hope to encourage the classes in Block 3 recycle and reuse paper more often by placing scrap paper inside one of our funky recycling bins.
Paper Wastage Competition
We are setting up a contest to see which block has the least amount of photocopying waste. This is a weekly contest and the block with the least amount of paper wastage will receive the prize of a school plant to care for.
We have really enjoyed learning about deforestation and the impact we are having on our environment, both locally and globally. Trees can’t speak, so we are hoping through our projects we can help them by educating others and encouraging everyone to be more aware of their impact on the environment.

School Banking day is Friday
Remember, Friday is School Banking day between 8:20 — 8:40am in
the undercover area. Students should bring in their weekly deposit to
the undercover area.
For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollar
mites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive
School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular saving habits.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers contribu-
tion of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based
on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
If your child has lost their book they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note and
on the next banking day we will issue them with a replacement.
Thank you for supporting the school banking program at Golden Bay Primary School. We would also like to
thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co—coordinators and process our
banking every week.
