Reading

(Dog)

Tell students that animals sometimes serve as inspiration to writers.

Start by showing the students some poems

Explain that a poem is a rhymed speech.

Poems have literary terms like similes and metaphors.

Let students know that you will be reading aloud several short poems that were in-

spired by animals. Have students listen for descriptive details as teacher reads.

Explain that good readers ask and answer questions as they read to help them better

understand and remember the ideas in the text.

When reading haiku, they may ask, “What is the subject of this poem? What does the

poet want me to know about this subject?”

Encourage students to go back into the text for evidence as they talk about the crea-

tive ways that the poets portray animals. Ask students to explain how the poets de-

scribe the different animals and their traits in the poems.

Explain to students that similes and metaphors are two types of figurative language.

A simile is a comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as. The room was as hot as an oven is an example of a simile.

A metaphor is the comparison of two unlike things without the use of like or as. The grass was a green carpet is an example of a metaphor.
