Principal’s Message Today we are entering the final week of Term Two. Hasn’t the year flown by so far. We are currently in the process of finalising Semester One student reports, and anticipate that these will be distributed on Thursday 25 June. These reports are a synopsis of the achievements and efforts of each individual student throughout the first half of this year. Having read through each one, I would say that there will be some very proud parents, as well as those who will want to offer encouragement and guidance for Semester Two. I would encourage any parents or carers who have any concerns about, or require clarification of any aspect of the student report, to make an appointment with their child’s teacher. Over the holiday period, a new electronic LED sign will be installed. I would like to thank Jody Smith, our P&C president, for her work in securing a funding grant to supply the sign and the rest of the P&C body for their efforts in matching the school’s contribution for its installation. The sign will be a valuable addition to our communication tools, and has the capacity to be programmed remotely, allowing information to be communicated in real time from anywhere. I would like to take the opportunity to recognise and congratulate two groups who have worked hard throughout this term. The first is the Wallacia Public School Dance Group. Throughout the term, these students have worked hard to learn a dance that we hoped would be accepted to perform later in the year at the Blue Mountains Nepean Dance Festival. I am very happy to announce that the students performed extremely well at the audition, and have been accepted into this year’s festival. Well done, dance group. The second group is our school debating team. This is the first year that Wallacia Public School has entered the Sydney Debating Challenge. Our team lost their first debate, however, quickly learnt from the experience and subsequently comprehensively won the next two. I would like to congratulate them on their efforts. Regarding progress on an Out of School Hours Service (OHSC) at Wallacia Public School, a Tender Selection Panel has made a decision on a service provider and advised our State Office of the decision. We are now waiting on State Office to review our decision and sign off on it. Once this happens, the successful organisation will be notified and the process of setting up our OHSC will get underway. I apologise again that this process has taken longer than expected, however, I feel that we are really close now to having this service operational. Term Treat Day will occur on Thursday 25 June for those students who earned a Principal’s Award during the term (see list overleaf). Congratulations to all of these students who have demonstrated ‘Safe’, ‘Respectful’ and appropriate ‘Learning’ behaviours consistently throughout the term. Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all of our families and students a safe and restful winter break. School will resume on Tuesday 14 July. Congratulations Term Treat Students

WELL DONE!

P&C Report We had a fantastic time at our AMF Bowling night and our bowling Champions were Nigel Smith and Mitchell Smith. I would like to thank Arnall Trophies for supplying the trophy. It was a very successful evening. Thank you to everyone who came! We are planning to do it again next year as it is a great social night. Some photos follow later in this newsletter. We have raised nearly $1500 from our Wacky Walkathon, thank you so much for your support. The three children who raised the most money from each class were Jett Gonzalez, Nathan Whibley and Desiree Robinson. There are still a few outstanding payments, so if you could return these before the end of term it would be very much appreciated. Last week we sent home a letter about the possibility of having some family portraits taken at school. If you are interested please return your slip, as we need 10 families for this fundraiser to proceed. Don’t forget our Bunning’s BBQ is on Sunday the 9th of August and we will need as many helpers as possible. It’s a great fundraiser and all the money raised will go back towards our children’s education and needs. I hope you enjoy the school holidays. Jody Smith

Class 5/6 news

We said farewell to Miss Gilbert who composed a great farewell video for our class to watch. We shared cupcakes, and talked about the great experiences we enjoyed like winning the coin race and making our own bushranger style WANTED posters.

The gold rush game is heating up with miners being robbed by bushrangers and tensions building towards building a fort to keep out the Goldfields police. Miners have banded together to buy shops and are using their strength in numbers to weather unexpected events like flooding and a goanna stealing the miners’ food.

On the Monday 15th June our debating team, Desiree, Silvana, Erin and Filipe, travelled to Macquarie Fields and represented the negative team for the topic ‘Saturday Sport should be compulsory for all Primary School children’. The team spoke in a school hall to approximately 150 students in a school with over 800 students. Our team was victorious and sang ‘We are the Champions’ on the drive back in Miss Huggins’ car.

Year 5 have joined Year 6 in creating a Dream Book which is about what their goals are and what they want to do in the future.

We had another successful meeting of a new Homework Club where 5/6 students can meet and help each other with their Maths homework.

We have been enjoying using the Lego robotics with Mr. Davies. We have made some robots already. We are having a lot of fun. Most of the class have finished.

5/6 reporters - Lachlan Smith, Lauren Preston, Ethan Merchant and Liam Ison.

Choir news

The choir travelled to Jamison Public School for its first rehearsal with all the other schools in the Penrith Valley Combined Choirs Group. It was fantastic to be coached by Mrs T as she likes to be called. We found out that our performance will be on the night of Tuesday 4th August and tickets will go on sale from Joan Sutherland performing Arts Centre Penrith on 20th July. We will provide more information to parents as the dates get closer because tickets tend to sell out really quickly. It was nice to see some friends from other schools and get together in the playground for a quick catch up.

Get involved in the School Banking program. You can get involved in the School Banking program by opening a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account at any Commonwealth Bank branch, over the phone on 13 2221, or via NetBank if you are an existing customer with NetBank access. Remember to take in identification for you and your child (driver’s licence and birth certificate). You will receive a Dollarmites wallet and deposit book that your child will use to participate in the program. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a max of $10 per individual deposit).

Thank you for supporting our school and helping to teach your child the benefits of saving regularly! Please note there will be no school banking next Friday 26 June.
