Computer Upgrades at West Leeming
Work concluded last week on the implementation of an updated computer system, Standard Operating Environment v 4.5. This system which is gradually being installed across all Department schools in WA has a number of significant advantages for staff and from the viewpoint of technical support. Thank you for your patience and understanding during the time that we were off-line. There may still be a few teething problems to sort out over the coming days before we are running as normal.
Welcome to new staff at West Leeming. Mrs Jennifer Jones has replaced Robyne Williams on the front desk. Jennifer will be with us until the end of this year. We also welcome Mrs Kylee Ginn, who has been appointed temporarily - and will be assisting in a number of different classes.
It’s always a pleasure to hear of our students’ achievements. Last week Emma Kempson of S1 proudly displayed her winning medal in the Girls Under 9 Senshinkan Karate Championships awarded by the WA Karate League. I must also apologise to Joshua Lai for omitting his name from the list of Year 4 Runners Up at the recent swimming carnival. A successful sporting weekend was had by Quintelle Kenworthy-Groen for her PB in javelin (25.72m) at the State Little Athletics Competition and a win in the Tennis West pennants competiton also last weekend.
Parents are reminded about the potential for loss and damage to children’s precious items when they are brought to school. We discourage bringing such things as toys and cards as they can be a source of disagreement!
A reminder that Mr Doust is currently on sick leave and will not return to work until the start of next term. Mr Os-borne will be Acting Principal for the next two and a half weeks as I return to the position of Deputy Principal. Ms Anne Foster will maintain the Deputy Principal position, with Mrs Wendy Ellis teaching in Year 6, S3.
Words of Wisdom
I was talking to one of our parents last week about the pros and cons of homework. These thoughts make interesting reading.
There is evidence for and against children doing homework and there are many variables which factor into the effec-tiveness of homework. Homework is however a good opportunity for parents to gain insight into what their child is learning at school. Your child is more likely to feel that homework is important if you let them know that you value seeing what they are learning. You can demonstrate this by allocating a small amount of time to give your undivided attention to helping them begin homework tasks. It is important to minimise distractions and it may also help to offer a snack and a working environment close by where you can monitor internet use and be ready to help if needed.

Congratulations Mrs Miles!
The Leeming Netball Club would like to congratulate Jan Miles for being awarded a WA Voluntary Ser-
vice Award for her long term dedication, 26 years in total, to the Leeming Netball Club. The Leeming
Netball Club commenced in 1990, when a group of dedicated and motivated parents recognised that the
growing area of Leeming Bullcreek required a Netball Club. Jan Miles was one of these dedicated par-
ents. Although she worked tirelessly, among many others, to get the Club off the ground, Jan did not join
the Leeming Netball Club Committee until 1998 as the Uniform Officer. She has now been a Committee
member for 18 years straight. For 7 of these she has held the role of President, where she used her
knowledge and passion to guide the Club she help found.
Jan was the first Leeming Netball Club member to achieve Life Membership status, which she did in
1999, the same year she won Club Person of the Year.
It is not just the Leeming Netball Club that Jan has volunteered her time for. She has also been an active
member of West Leeming Primary School, Leeming Senior High and Leeming Community for many years.
More recently she has become a proactive member of the Fremantle Netball Association where she has
held the position on the Committee for 5 years and specifically the Position of Competition Coordinator
for the last couple.
Thank you Jan your work has been greatly appreciated.
Replacement Stationery Items
After discussion, the Maths’ Committee decided to take a practical ap-proach in endeavouring to improve our students’ money handling skills. From next week (Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8.30 am until 8.50 am) Year 6 students will be selling basic stationery items near the library.
Children will be encouraged to count out the money they need to pur-chase the item/s and say whether or not they need change. Parents, of course, are allowed to be present to also help their child if necessary.
Please note that we will not have a large amount of change, so please send as close as possible to the correct money.
The Stationery Shop is available for all students, regardless of their
proficiency with money.
