Westlawn Public School Newsletter Term 2 Week 10 3rd July 2018 Strive to Achieve North Street, Grafton. 2460 6642 7466 [email protected] It has been a wonderful term of educational opportunities for our students. We have seen children excel in sporting teams, as individual sportspersons, in public speaking, in academic pursuits, as leaders and in many other ways. We are very proud of our students, who rise to the occasion and are exemplary role models and ambassadors for our school. Thank you to our teachers who make these experiences become a reality for the students. Thank you to the parents who have supported students in these activities. We send our appreciation to all parents who have helped in the canteen, classrooms, Book Club, student banking, the P&C fundraising or in any other way. It has been a busy and rewarding term and I wish our staff and students a happy and safe break to recharge their batteries before they return for second semester. Students return to school on Tuesday 24 July. Westlawn Athletics Carnival Due to the inclement weather over the weekend, we were not able to hold our Athletics Carnival yesterday. The ground was too wet for students to compete safely. Our Athletics Carnival is now scheduled to go ahead next term on 25 July. Volunteers are needed for the barbecue and canteen at the carnival. We would love to see some new faces even if you can only help for half an hour. Many hands make light work. Please complete the tear-off at the end of the Newsletter or phone the office if you can help. Even an hour on the day would give someone else a break. Parent Information Meeting for Kinder 2019 Last week we held our information evening for prospective Kindergarten parents in 2019. We had a wonderful group of parents attend. Thank you to Caryn Dunstan for speaking as a current Kindergarten parent and to our school captains, Jimmy Ford and Bree Hunter for speaking from a student perspective about our wonderful school. Lamington Drive The Lamington Drive was a great success thanks to the support of our school community and to the efforts of the coordinator, Karen Jefferies. Karen was assisted on the delivery day by many wonderful volunteers. NAIDOC Week Activities This week we are celebrating NAIDOC Week. Yesterday Mrs Gough took two of our Year 2 SRC representatives, Gracie Oxenbridge and James Davison to the official school opening at Grafton Public School. We were also very proud of Jye Cone, another Westlawn Year 2 student who was invited to deliver the Acknowledgement of Country at the beginning of the ceremony. Message from the Principal

Today we held our NAIDOC Week assembly as part of our school celebrations of NAIDOC Week. Thank you to the family and community members who attended. Tomorrow Year 5 will go to McKittrick Park to join with Year 5 students from the other primary schools: Grafton, South Grafton and Gillwinga, to learn Aboriginal games under the tuition of students from South Grafton High School. South Grafton High and Grafton High School provides the bus transport and a sausage sandwich and drink for all students attending. We thank the high schools for this opportunity for all children to have fun together and make friends across the Grafton Community of Schools. The Year 6 students will be leading the children in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 in Indigenous games at school on this day. Year 6 will use their leadership skills in managing the groups of younger children. Children in Years 3 and 4 will take part in a variety of cultural activities to learn about Aboriginal dance, art and music. On Thursday, Westlawn is hosting the NAIDOC Public Speaking Competition for the Grafton Community of Schools. Parents are welcome to attend. Students from Grafton, South Grafton, Gillwinga, South Grafton High and Grafton High have been selected to represent their schools. Our representatives will be: Stage 3 Individual - Oneil Brown, Stage 2 Individual - Cara Lomas, Stage 3 Group - Marliiya Laurie, Grace Milligan, Alice Hughes and Nate Laurie, Stage 2 Group – Sophie Johnson, Nate Barrett, Mason Cone and Tylah Radin

Reminders Infants Disco The Infants Disco will be on Friday 6 July, the last day of term. Please ensure your child wears closed in shoes and clothing with sleeves. The theme is ‘Bright Colours’. School Photos We have had many enquiries regarding the School Photos which were taken in March. They are usually returned to school from the photographer by the end of Term 2. There has been a slight delay and they will be back to us late next term.

SRC Citizenship Award

The SRC present a weekly Citizenship Award at our primary assembly. Each week we meet to discuss what

encouraging things we have seen happening in our playground and classrooms. The SRC look for behaviours that

are helpful, demonstrate our school rules or an act that shows a

student as a positive role model for others. We then nominate children

we have seen displaying these behaviours. Last week the SRC focussed

on finding children demonstrating fairness towards others.

The students who were nominated by SRC representatives were- Bodhi

Henwood, Jaxon Rediger, Lachlan Clark, Jason Parkes and Luna Timmins

We all voted. The award winner has been seen and heard…being fair

playing handball, standing up for what is right and including others in

games. This week’s Citizenship Award winner is Luna Timmins.

Congratulations Luna!

Over the coming weeks, the SRC are looking for students being helpful around our school.
