From your Chairman, Patrick Scully. I start this Winter Newsletter by remembering our late President Mr. George Rutherford. George was the heart of the Benidoleig and District Branch, and we will all miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his family at this time. Juana is now home in Benidoleig with her son Grahame, and we will be meeting up with them soon. On Friday 10 January, I attended the RBL Annual General Meeting Conference, District North held in Alicante as a Branch Delegate, and was accompanied by Mr Peter Tomlin Branch Vice Chairman and Mr Ron Clements Branch Member as guests..I would like to thank them both for their company and support. District Chairman, Mr Chris Wyatt, who stood down from his position as District Chairman, gave the exhortation, and in remembering, our late President George was thought of. The new Chairman of District North in Spain is now Mr Nigel Hails. Guest Speakers at the Conference were the District North President Mr Paul Rodwell.(British Consul for Spain), and Mr Bob Gamble OBE, Assistant Director of Membership and Armed Forces Engagement. We were given the following information: POPPY APPEAL. The 2012/2013 Poppy Appeal raised the sum of 172.972.85€ marginally higher than the previous year The Chair thanked all Branch Poppy Appeal organisers, members, family and friends of the RBL for their hard work and generous donations. WELFARE. There has been a significant change in the procedure regarding Welfare Help. You would have been informed by our Secretary Derek that there will be no contact between client and Branch. However there are two direct telephone lines (FREE) for enquiries. They are:- Ms Donna Wilson, County Welfare Officer, telephone 676451780 or Ms Pam Twissell-Cross, District Welfare Co-ordinator on 902109356. These new procedures not only ensure standardisation throughout the District, but also mean that the recording and dissemination of cases and information will be centralised and simplified. I have been assured that no call will be unanswered . The lines are open from 08.00-16.00hrs. Monday to Friday. At our Members Meeting, Tuesday February 11 th at 11am the guest speaker will be Ms Pam Twissell-Cross. This meeting is NOT TO BE MISSED!! COMMITTEE One of the responsibilities of the Committee is to elect a new President. At the last Committee Meeting it was unanimously agreed that we offer the Honorary Position to Ron Clements. Having given time for respect to George, Ron will be inaugurated at our next Committee Meeting on Jan.15th 2014. We know that George would have approved of his successor. Also in this Newsletter we are pleased to introduce 3 new Committee Members. Peter Tomlin, Vice Chairman; Peter Smith, Recruitment and Retention Officer; and last, but not least Pat Wardrop, Committee Member. Well,, it’s roll up sleeves time again, and I know that with your help and support another successful year is ahead of us. All the very best wishes for 2014. Good luck, and good health to all. In closing I would like to share with you a letter I have received from George Rutherford’s family. Patrick. Chairman. . Hearing that Patrick was preparing the Newsletter, I wanted to take the opportunity of writing to you all following my father's death last December. He spoke often to us about his Legion friends, also his legion of friends! No puns like George's puns so I'll stop now. The kindness, support and friendship shown to my parents throughout their involvement with the British Legion has been wonderful, but especially during these last few difficult months, knowing that their friends have supported them has been a huge source of comfort to me. I thank you all very much. I understand from Patrick that many of you have made enquiries about holding an event in memory of my father. Sadly, at the moment, my mother is unable to think about this. She is now back home in Benidoleig, which was her wish, but it is obviously very strange and upsetting for her to be on her own after73 years if marriage. They were a devoted couple and I hope that as time passes she will find solace in the fact they had so many happy years together. Again, I thank you all, but I must respect my mother's wishes. Patrick has been very understanding about this dilemma, despite the flack he has received and the heartache it has caused. I trust you will appreciate the difficult position he has been in. Will see how my mother progresses - perhaps we will be able to arrange an event at a later date. George had a wonderful time when he presented the George Rutherford Trophy at the golf tournament only a short time before he died. A stretch limo, good friends, and a trophy in his honour all put a twinkle in his eyes! What a day for him. With my very best wishes to everyone, for a happy and peaceful New Year and also from his grandchildren and great grandchildren. From Grahame Rutherford BENIDOLEIG & DISTRICT WINTER 2014 NEWSLETTER

NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS

We would like to welcome new Committee Members to serve on Your Committee from 2013 – 2014.

PETER TOMLIN – VICE CHAIRMAN

Peter completed his National Service in the Royal Navy and returned to engineering in what is now British Telecom.

He has served as an Area Board Member with responsibilities for Management Services and prior to his voluntary retirement was

a Project Executive Engineer with responsibilities for the introduction of computerising Customer Services throughout the UK.

Moving to Spain eleven years ago has enabled Peter to resurrect his keen interest in photography, cycling and motorcycling.

During this period he was a member and Vice Chairman of the Jalon and Orba Lions, and for three years he was their Treasurer.

Now Vice Chairman and Trustee of the Royal British Legion Benidoleig and District Branch, Peter said, “This will give me the

opportunity to use my skills and experience, alongside other members of the Committee, to raise the profile and increase the

Funds of the RBL.”

PETER SMITH – RECRUITMENT OFFICER

To donate prizes please contact me on 966 408 165 or any Committee Member to arrange collection. Many thanks.

Peter Tomlin Social Events Organizer

Peter moved to Spain with his wife, Judy in 2001. They have been keen

supporters of the Branch at social events before taking membership. Prior

to this Peter worked for British Gas in a variety of posts in Engineering,

Sales & Marketing . He retired as Area Director in their Business Division

in 2000. He holds a BSc. and is a CEng. He was also a keen cricketer

representing Yorkshire and the English Schools and played as a professional

in the Yorkshire leagues. He currently works part time as operations

manager for a small construction business in Orba. Interests are travel and

fishing as time permits!

Peter says “ Having enjoyed the social side of the Branch since moving to Spain and seen the workload it takes to run the

Branch, I feel it’s time to put something back in to help continue it’s growth and success by joining the Committee. We

have some new Committee members this year and I’ve offered to look after Recruitment. Our Branch has a healthy

membership of around 120 but I’d like to help maintain and increase this plus our contribution to TRBL. Please help by

bringing your friends to our social events and encouraging them to join us!”

EVENTS WE HAVE HELD DURING THE AUTUMN

A VARIETY PERFORMANCE OF ROYAL QUALITY FOR THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

REMEMBRANCE SERVICE. 10TH NOVEMBER, THE SANTORIUM SAN FRANCISCO DE BORJA FONTILLES,

Careline Theatre, presented an exceptional performance on Thursday 17th

October with their production of Old Time Music Hall – Those Good Old

Days and donated the proceeds from the first night performance, A

fabulous audience joined with the cast to sing along to tunes of yesteryear.

The costumes were amazing and the professional acting guaranteed the

evening went with a swing. Although every act was of such high quality it

was difficult to pick one particular act but by a unanimous straw poll the

highlight of the evening was Candida Wright with her production of

‘Popsy Whopsy’. Candy’s timing was impeccable and the audience was

crying with delight. Fantastic entertainment. The audience showed their

appreciation throughout the evening which made for a great atmosphere

and 1500 euros was raised for the Poppy Appeal.

POPPY APPEAL LAUNCH

On Tuesday 15th October at 7pm we hosted our Poppy Appeal launch at El Cid. This is the first time our Branch

has held an official Launch and we ‘did it in style’

We obtained sponsorship from Dorothy Scully to provide a buffet to launch our main fund raising event of the year

and for Members and guests to enjoy the evening. The Mayor of Benidoleig was invited but was unable to stay for

the evening due to family illness. He did however wish us a successful evening. Some of our Sponsors also

attended and have been most generous in helping to make our Branch a success.

After the Exhortation, Patrick talked about why we were fundraising. Welfare is at the heart of everything we do

and with our service personnel returning from Afghanistan, this has meant that our returning veterans, the people

we support, are often a lot younger that people realise. Working with the M.O.D. and Help for Heroes, the Legion

has committed £28 million pounds over the next 19 years to help run Personnel Recovery Centres across the UK.

These centres will help seriously wounded, injured and sick young men and women recover their physical and

mental strength so they can either return to duty or make the transition to civilian life. A quarter of those being

helped by the Legion are under the age of 44. The Legion pays out £1.7 million PER WEEK supporting the

Armed Forces community. Much of this money is raised through the annual Poppy Appeal.

In 2012 the Legion raised £140.5 million, including a record breaking £42.8 for the Poppy Appeal. Here in Spain

we raised 171,376.88€ across 18 Branches. This money is used primarily in Spain to help serving and ex service

personnel and their families who are in need. Any surplus is sent to the Benevolent Fund in the UK. From our

Branch we raised 10,235.24€ and sent a total of 13,500€ to the Poppy Appeal. The balance coming from surplus

monies in our account. With your help we made this year a record fundraising year.

The Legion ensures that those who gave their lives for our freedom are never forgotten. This is why we are

all proud of our Charity. WEAR YOUR POPPY WITH PRIDE

At the end of the evening many Members and some sponsors took Poppy Boxes to fundraise.

The timing of the service at 11.30am was to coordinate with the Minute Silence in the

UK. Rev. Declan presided and Father Beneyto joined us as usual to read the Gospel.

David Cannon played the organ music.

The Church was full with RBL Members, friends and guests. Readings were given by

Joan Scully and Josie Creasey and a very thoughtful, interesting and moving Address

was read by Peter Hooker. The Service was very emotional when Mike Summers, the

bugler played The Last Post. Everyone who attended the Remembrance Day Service

were very generous as the collection raised 455.75€ for the Poppy Appeal with 100€

donation to the Church. Unfortunately, Branch President George Rutherford was

unable to attend the service to lay the wreath and Ewan Taylor stood in for George.

After the service many Members met at El Cid for a Sunday carvery lunch with the

opportunity to meet up with fellow Members and friends.

Several Members have asked for a copy of the Address read by Peter Hooker. It is reproduced below:

Remembrance Day Service –Address 2013 read by Peter Hooker

Let me first say that I regard it as a privilege to have been cajoled into giving this address. You will soon learn that this is not

something I do for a living, nor is it something I have much talent for, nor, if I am honest is it something I wanted to do.

The comfort I glean from standing here is that, I at least, have one thing in common with the thousands of members of our Armed

Forces who we are remembering today. I am sure that very few of them wanted to face the horrors and hardships of war, but

they did. And that is why we should, and indeed do, remember them.

I felt it was important to have a ‘theme’ for this short address, rather than work from random jottings, and I decided on the

heading of ‘Four Letter Words’. The expression may be controversial, but PLEASE don’t leave, as I can assure you that there is

nothing inappropriate or offensive in this address. Words such as:- LUST (for Power), HATE, EVIL, probably cover most

of the causes of conflict around the world. And that has been the case for several hundred years, and I have no intention of

dwelling on those. We could probably add GREED, as a major cause as well, but it has too many letters! PAIN, FEAR, are

just two words that sum up the initial results of conflict. But, let’s get positive: If we can’t stop it in the first place, which

should be the preferred option, what can we do about clearing up the mess it leaves behind?

After the 1st World War, (and after every war before then), men and women, mostly very young, returning from conflict, some

severely injured, some mentally scarred, some with no possibility of working, their intended career opportunities ruined, they had

nothing. No! They couldn’t sign on the dole, claim Disability Allowance, or Job Seekers Allowance, etc, etc. The Welfare

State hadn’t arrived yet. They were solely dependent on family and friends and possibly the church, and the one or two small

military based charities, to support them through the rest of their lives. There have been many thousands of them. And that

doesn’t take into account the dependents of the thousands, who didn’t come back, who GAVE their lives.

What they needed most then, and still need now, was:- HELP There are still severely injured members of our Armed Forces

returning from Afghanistan today. Young people who have the rest of their lives to LIVE, and they deserve to live them, and not

just survive. They may NEED HELP for 60 or 70 years!

Those two little 4-Letter Words are so important in all our lives. They need HELP to LIVE. We all need a little bit of HELP

sometimes. But there are some who NEED far more, and for a lot longer. I hope you are keeping count of the 4-Letter Words.

Since we went positive there have been 4!. (GIVE, (or GAVE), NEED, HELP, LIVE, (Not Just Survive).

You have all heard of the Charity ‘HELP For Heroes’, What a good name? It sums up what they do, which is a fantastic job in

raising money to HELP the returning members of our Armed Forces. Here on the Costa Blanca we have our excellent ‘HELP’

Charities that help so many people in their hour of need. Not specifically victims of war, but anyone who needs any type of

HELP. Such a powerful little 4-letter word. But to provide HELP you NEED some GOOD and KIND people who CARE.

They NEED to GIVE their TIME, and their skills. You would also NEED to FIND the resources and money that was so badly

needed, and persuade those people who had those resources to invest in this cause. 4 More 4-Letter Words, GOOD, KIND,

CARE, TIME. Did you get them all? We now have Eight and the sentiments they portray, were an integral part of the

formation of The British Legion.

In 1921, 4 groups of GOOD people, who did CARE, and were prepared to GIVE their TIME, felt there was a big NEED to

SAVE these members of our Armed Forces from a life of pain and poverty. They formed an organization with the sole intention

of providing a better LIFE for the injured and SICK who had returned from the Great War. Two existing charities in 1921,

Comrades of The Great War and The Officers Association merged with two other ex-service organizations to form the

British Legion. And over the next 50 years they built the foundation of the great organization that we see today. In May 1971,

they were granted a Royal Charter, on their 50th

Anniversary, and they then became the Royal British Legion.

A few FACTS about the Legion for those who may not appreciate the scale of the operation.

• Around 9 Million people are eligible for their HELP

• They pay out in excess of £1.3 million every week supporting the Armed Forces Community

• The Legion has pledged to contribute £27 million over the next few years to establish and operate the Battle Back centre

in Lilleshall. It is a high tech rehabilitation centre for seriously injured members of our Armed Services.

• They have recently started a £5 million ‘Be The Boss’ Scheme to help ex service personnel start up small businesses.

They helped 1,000 people in the first year, and nearly 3,000 in the second.

• They have in excess of 360,000 members in the UK and, at present, 4000 in Spain, all helping this great organization

• They work in conjunction WITH many other organizations, including ‘HELP for Heroes’

One more very important little word, ‘WITH’ --- Work WITH each other, don’t fight; you achieve much so more.

There may be some of you who have a negative view of ‘charities’ as a whole, and admittedly some have been challenged in the

media for not giving enough of the money they collect to the cause that they are claiming to support.

Some more FACTS about the Legion.

1 Every cent that goes into the Poppy Appeal boxes, and every cent of personal and commercial donations to the

Poppy Appeal goes to the Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen or their dependants. It is NOT spent on New Furniture for

the Managing Director!

2 All administration costs come from Members Subscriptions, which is one reason we would like more members, and

the other reason is that we are really nice people and we would like you to enjoy the same camaraderie that we

enjoy.

3 All other facets of the organization are very strongly monitored and regulated, as befits an organization that is nearly

100 years old. You can ask our Treasurer!

4 All the money that we raise in Spain is for use in Spain, to support people who qualify here. Last Year €171,000

was raised from the Poppy Appeal, we hope to beat it.

As, we the members, pay for the administration through our subscriptions, it is vital that we ensure that the membership is strong

and growing. For sure, the administration costs are going to keep on growing, as all costs keep growing, and we need to grow

with or ahead of them, if the Legion is going to survive for another 100 years.

Some of you will know that there is a Branch of the Royal British Legion currently based in Benidoleig. We would be pleased

to talk to anyone who is not currently a member, who thinks they may like to give a little of their time and expertise to help this

very worthwhile cause. It is said that the Branches are the Legion’s life blood and we would like the blood in ours to still be

pumping long after some of us have passed on. You would also get to meet the rest of our wonderful members. Please talk to

me or any of the committee after the service, if you have any questions. Or, you can go onto the Website,

There is a lot of work to do. I was in the Jalon market for about an hour yesterday, and I did not notice 1 Poppy. I wasn’t

looking for them, but I did not see one. And remember:- One Volunteer is worth 100 pressed men.

In Conclusion: I hope you will view the much maligned ‘4-Letter Word’ in a different light. There are a couple of others that I

didn’t manage to use in this short address. LOVE and PRAY spring to mind. A substantial amount of these from us all would

certainly help and, with a bit of poetic license, we could also ask for GOD’S LOVE for those members of our returning Armed

Forces who so desperately NEED HELP.

As a reminder of nine of the those key Words, that you may wish to use, and pass on to friend or two,

Please: COME and JOIN the Royal British Legion, you will get a WARM welcome.

And your subscription will help to keep the wheels turning.

GIVE just a little of your TIME and skills and experience

To: Show you CARE and want to HELP those and their dependents who GAVE everything for us to have a better LIFE

This Membership Year Your Branch, with Your Help, has raised and paid to District the sum of

14.426,70€ for the Poppy Appeal

The Committee would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this record amount/

THE GEORGE RUTHERFORD TROPHY, OLIVA NOVA GOLF CLUB 15th

After the trophy presentation Spectrum FM´s John Migan said a few words, reading a few amazing facts stating the incredible
