School Improvement Plan
The school has made excellent progress in meeting the goals of
the School Improvement Plan 2018 in the areas of Student
Support, Curriculum and Community of Learners. As a result of
the excellent work by staff our students are benefiting through a
settled, positive and productive learning environment.
National Literacy and Numeracy Testing (NAPLAN)
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 all participated in testing during
Term 2 with the results being sent to the school recently. These
will be sent home with students this week.
Overall, our results were extremely positive with each year level
making great improvements since their previous test which was
held two years ago. Cressy also performed favourably when
compared with similar schools.
Individual students received a range of scores with a number of
students achieving in the top 10% with one score of 100%.
I was very pleased, during the testing week, to see students trying
hard, taking the tests seriously and doing their best.
The school treats this test as one piece of information on one
day which we use, together with other data collected, to help us
to plan for the learning of each individual student.
Student Activities
Students have been involved in many activities throughout the
term including winter sport in Years 5-6 and 7-10. Participation
rates have been high and I was privileged to see the netball and
indoor soccer finals where Cressy Years 7-10 teams performed
with distinction to both finish in the runner-up position. I was
impressed by all the girls but particularly Lily McGee, who scored
some great goals under pressure, and Chloe Fellows whose
determination and persistence pushed the indoor soccer final
into extra time.
Thank you to Mrs Rachel Oliver and Mrs Elle Stokes for
coordinating our involvement in the rosters, to staff for their
work in guiding students and to parents/carers for their support
of the program.
Increased Funding
Last week we were fortunate to find out that the school had
received extra funding from the Tasmanian Government to
support our farm and associated learning program. Details will
become clearer as the year progresses.
Staffing Information
Mrs Elle Stokes will be going on maternity leave at the end of this
week with her classes taken by Mr Brett Fryett and Mr Emil Fadel
for the remainder of this term and the beginning of Term 4. We
wish Mrs Stokes well for the birth of her baby.
Mrs Kim Exton is continuing in her role at ECIS until the end of
Term 3 2019 and we are pleased that Mrs Sallie Burr will
continue in the school office.
I am equally pleased that Mrs Daisy Stephens has had her term
extended as Assistant Principal which is now confirmed until the
end of 2020.
Cressy Bowls Club
We are having an Open Day on Sunday September 23!
Come along and support the Cressy Bowls Club and find out
about the game of bowls.
Mark Shelton, local MP, will be at the greens.
Australian Drought Appeal
On Friday September 14, students are
encouraged to dress up as a farmer to support
the drought appeal.
There will be a bbq available on the day for students to purchase
sausages or vege burgers for $2 each, where all proceeds will go
towards the farmers.
Students are not required to donate any money, as the school
will make a monetary donation on their behalf.
These are not CDHS activities
Year 7-10 Student Option Choices 2019
Current students in Year 6-9 (including feeder primary schools)
have now received their final option selection forms for 2019.
These forms need to be returned to school by Friday 21st
September .
Behind the classroom door …….
Secondary - Class 10B
While some students are already counting down the weeks until the
Celebration Dinner, it is still business as usual in the classroom.
In English we are undertaking a documentary study of the film
Blackfish. Some students will investigate the differences between
persuasion and propaganda to determine which category this film
falls under, whereas other students will explore the issue of animal
captivity and its place in modern society.
In History we have begun studying the American Civil Rights
Movement of the 1950/60s and in Maths we continue to persevere
with trigonometry.
We’ve just commenced our physics unit in Science and have started
this by experimenting with speed and comparing our sprint starts
with Usain Bolt!
Bring on exams in the last week of term!
Primary - Class 5/6
Students in 5/6 Allen have been working hard this term to complete the annual Cows Create Careers program offered by Dairy Aus-
tralia.
The class was split into 6 groups, and each group was responsible for caring for a calf for a period of three weeks at our school farm.
All groups were given the opportunity to feed the calves, perform health checks and record data to graph their growth and changes
over the three week period that the calves were with us.
In addition to this, each group chose a research topic focussing on an aspect of the dairy industry in Australia, and have been working
very hard to construct a model that demonstrates what they have learnt about that topic.
These models, along with some very detailed information that the students are working on, will be submitted to Dairy Australia at the
end of September for judging.
We will find out at a celebration day in November how we have performed against a range of schools from across Northern Tasmania.
Year 9 Science Week Excursion -
student report
On Tuesday August 14, both the Year 9 classes
went on a field trip to the museum to participate in
the Science Week activities.
After we arrived we went straight to the see the
‘Crazy Scientist Show’. He did lots of crazy
experiments such as putting people in a giant bubble
and blowing toilet paper over the whole audience.
Then both classes went to see the spider exhibit.
For some it was a creepy experience and for others
it was fascinating. Next was the planetarium, where
we learnt more about black holes and star
constellations.
Lunch and a free explore of the Phenomena Factory
was next on the agenda.
Before heading home, there was time to explore the
World War One exhibition, as well as the
taxidermy animals and dinosaur bones.
The day finished with hands on activities related to
some of the change makers in the Science field.

Year 2/3 explore 3D!
On Monday September 10, students in 2/3 Greig/Tyrrell were learning about three-dimensional (3D) shapes
during their Mathematics lesson!
Students rotated around stations to explore different concepts related to 3D shapes. In pairs, students were
constructing a variety of 2D nets and ultimately folding them into 3D models. They were also building life-sized
3D shapes in teams of 4, as well as, using inquiry skills to research the shape properties.
Students were working away busily and hands-on, asking questions and discussing concepts amongst themselves.
The activities guided students to unfold a huge range of information about 3D shapes, including their names,
nets, and amount of faces, edges and vertices!
Illawarra Skipping Performance
“The Illawarra Jumping Jacks”, who are students from Illawarra Primary School in Hobart, visited our students in Prep to Year 4 last
Friday afternoon!
We were lucky enough to watch a brilliant display of tricky skipping skills put on by the students. Some of the awesome skipping tricks
included were the ‘double under’, ‘grapevine’ and a crowd favourite, the ‘can can’.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the performance and are keen to continue practicing their own skipping skills in preparation for our
Jump Rope for Heart, Jump Off Day at the end of term!
A big thank you to the students and teachers from Illawarra Primary School!
