Welcome back everyone. I hope you managed to have a refreshing break. What times we live in - floods and cyclones. Our thoughts go to all who have suffered from these devastating events. I recall Martin Overson’s movie, “The Deluge” which told the story of the disastrous floods of 1893. I salute the courage of those who have had to rebuild their lives and others who lent a helping hand when needed. Thank goodness there was fine weather for the Australia Day celebrations. A large number of people enjoyed the free food and entertainment in Bandstand Park. The WMHS was well represented and there were numerous enquiries about local history. Thanks to Jill and the dedicated group of volunteers who put so much effort into making this day a success. The next coach trip is to Tamborine Mountain and it promises to be a very good day. Noela and myself recently spent the day there checking out the venues. Morning tea will be at the Botanic Gardens. I did not know they existed and was pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful setting all managed by volunteers. It would be easy to spend some time there enjoying the scenery and the walks. Our morning will be spent at the Tamborine Mountain Heritage Centre. The local historical group is looking forward to our visit and there should be plenty to see and learn about. Lunch will be at the Bowls Club. It is a pleasant venue with a bar and restaurant. The main course will be beef with vegetables followed by dessert and tea or coffee. Drinks can also be purchased. After Lunch we will visit the Nardoo Lavender Shop. It comprises two huge barns with lavender products, arts and crafts and antiques. The next stop will be “Gallery Walk” where you may spend the rest of the afternoon. For those who have not been there, it is made up a numerous shops selling gourmet food including free tastings of fudge and cheese. There are also a number of cellar doors with free wine tastings. As well, there are Art and Craft and Antique shops. The coach will then take us back to Wynnum to be home by 5pm. Don’t miss out on this trip - it will be one to remember. The WMHS has received a grant from the Brisbane City Council to purchase digital recording equipment for a project entitled “From Slates to Ipads”. The purpose of the project is to record the school experiences of local people. With the closure of four schools in the area at the end of last year, it is important to have a record of past pupils’ stories. If you would like to part of this project, please see myself or one of the committee. Our main speaker at the next meeting will be Dr. Jim Lergessner. Some of you will remember him from the Bribie trip. He has a wide knowledge of the history of Moreton Bay. His talk will be on Archibald Meston, the “Protector of Aborigines” in the Nineteenth Century. It will be a very interesting talk. I hope to see you at the next meeting.

• A query, from a local resident.

In the 1950’s, when I was a young boy, my father brought me fishing to this area. All I remember are the masses of flies AND three scaffolding structures around Hemmant. They were large, built on the open paddocks, on the right-hand side travelling towards Lytton. The three storey buildings were skeletons – no cladding walls. The first was entirely square in outline. The second and third structures both had ornate curved finish on the roofline with a Greek urn mounted high in the centre of each side. There was an article about the structures, either in the “Sunday Mail” or “Truth” at the time. The unfinished buildings eventually disappeared, maybe for the re-alignment of the road. Does anybody remember these structures or know the reason for their existence, or their demolition?

• “Elanora Park”, Wynnum North Student, Cass Gaisford, came to us last year searching for a topic to use in her studies for a Diploma in Conservation and Land Use Management. She chose to study Elanora Park and undertook a field investigation to assist in determining the natural and cultural heritage significance of the area. This week she has forwarded the results of her research, which are available in the Resource Room. Thank you Cass. • In November we had a query from member Fay Sheriff:

“Does anyone know where, in Stratton Terrace, the house called “Wycombe” was located? From the ’Commonwealth Electoral Rolls’ we found that Charles and Emily Sophie Castner lived in “Wycombe”, Stratton Terrace Manly at least from 1922 to 1928. From the ‘Post Office Directories’, we found that there were seven residences in Stratton Terrace on the left hand-side when travelling between Cardigan and Nelson Parades. The Castner family lived in the third house from Cardigan Parade. In the fourth house lived William Gunn, Grocer and in the sixth residence Miss Fiona Voight who ran a store. Today those buildings would have been disappeared and been replaced by newer residences.

• Australia Day 2011

A big thank you to all of our members who came and supported the Society’s display on the foreshore on Australia Day. We gave away lollies to the children and much interest was shown in the local history of the district.

Till next time, Jill Greenhill

WHERE WAS I? November 2010

Church of Christ, on the corner of Berrima Street and St Catherine’s Terrace

The building was said to have been constructed in a day with the voluntary labour of its members. The chapel was opened for services on Sunday 13 December 1925 and dedicated on 24 January 1926, with Pastor A J Fischer conducting the service. A fine spacious hall was added to this chapel in 1930, again erected, through the generosity of church members and with voluntary labour. In October 1949 a Manse was officially opened and the Silver Jubilee of the Church celebrated in December 1950. This year marks the 86th Anniversary of the Church.

The Society has a continuing Project to collect information on persons residing in Wynnum, Manly Lota and District before 1912. In 1912 Wynnum became a town in its own right and there were only a few hundred people residing here at that time. This month we feature The de Lange family.

William de Lange was born on 28 October 1869 in Sheffield, Yorkshire England of Netherland parents, Herman and Gezina (nee Hoogeboom) de Lange. Herman was an ornamental confectioner, and was living in England by 1866. The de Lange family came to Queensland when William was of an early age. Father, Herman ran a confectionery business at Petrie Bight. One of his masterpieces was a model of St Mary’s new Roman Catholic Church at Ipswich, made solely of sugar, which was presented at the opening ceremony of the church on 1 October 1904. (Brisbane Courier 27/09/1904). In 1909 Herman was given a surprise 77th Birthday party at his residence at Petrie Bight. (Brisbane Courier 31/03/1909) Herman died in May 1921, his wife predeceased him in 1906. Son William de Lange was associated with the Moreton regiment in1896 as Pioneer Sergeant of the Queensland Volunteer rifles. He was a member of the Council of the Association of the Sacred Heart in 1905. William joined the employ of the Brisbane City Council in April 1906 as a temporary sub-inspector. In 1907 he sat for and gained the Certificate of Inspector of Nuisances with the local board of the Royal Sanitary Institute of London. Thus began his loyal service to the Brisbane City Council where he was employed as a Health Inspector, from 1910 to 1937.

On 6 April 1910, at St Stephen’s Cathedral, William, as a resident to Leichhardt Street, Brisbane, married Evelyn Dorothy Neighbour, of Alfred Street, Brisbane, youngest daughter of Edward Thomas Neighbour who owned a large boot factory in Brisbane. His associates in the Council gave him “a handsome case of cutlery” on the occasion of his marriage. When they married William and Evelyn moved into the Neighbour’s holiday home at 79 Carlton Terrace, Wynnum.

OUR PIONEERS – The DE LANGE FAMILY

William and Evelyn de Lange 1910 79 Carlton Terrace Wynnum Four sons were born, William (1911), Leo (1915) and twins, Francis and Joseph (1922). There was one dughter, Gezina (1912). Evelyn de Lange (nee Neighbour) was a concert pianist and violinist, and played with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She also belonged to the local Wynnum Philharmonic Society (1918) and was leader of the orchestra. She was a teacher of the violin and piano in Wynnum. William died in 1937, aged 68 and Evelyn Dorothy died in 1956 aged 66 years. Son, Leo Jarlath de Lange attended Mount Carmel Convent and was awarded a prize in 1929 for the highest marks in the scholarship class. He was on the committee of the local Gordon Club in 1940. He married Joyce Schank of Toogoolawah in the crypt of the Holy Name Cathedral on 11 July 1942. Son, Robert was born at St Kilda in 1946. In 1950 Leo and Joyce travelled to Sydney 1950 to compete in the finals of the “Mr and Mrs Australia Quest”. Leo was said to be a detective and was Inspector of Police at Wynnum Police Station from 1974 to 1976. When he retired, he cleared some land and grew olive trees. He died in1989.

SCOPE AWARD 2011 - Congratulations to Ian Kennedy

Member Ian Kennedy with the President of Scope Bandstand Park Australia Day 2011

Ian was born and educated in Brisbane. In his early life he went out west and worked as a jackeroo and after his marriage he and his wife worked on a property near Lightening Ridge. Ian had three children. He and his wife came to Wynnum/ Manly in the 1990s, on retirement, after running a newsagency. Their house, they had purchased from an aunt. Ian’s active life was not at an end. He enrolled in a ‘Support A Reader Course’ and spent many hours as a volunteer assisting the pupils of Wondall Heights State School. Ian joined the local historical society and increased his circle of acquaintances. He volunteered “For Duty” at the Historical Society Resource Room, in the Civic Centre outside Wynnum Library and can be found there every second Wednesday. He has been there since the Resource Room opened in 2003. He chats with visitors and endeavours to offer assistance. Ian is concerned for others and will spontaneously visit anyone in the Society who is not well. He runs errands for people. He ferries people when the need arises, despite his own health now not being the best. The Wynnum Manly Historical Society had no hesitation in recommending Ian as being a community member worthy of recognition.
