I had to act in a school play when I was about 10 years old. I really didnt want to do it but every- one had to do it so I didnt have a choice. A talent agent came and watched it and later gave me some work. Its funny because I always wanted a movie career, I just didnt think that I would be in the movies.Kristen Stewart Term 3 is frequently referred to as the cultural termat our school. Considering the School Play, Speech & Drama Festival, Speech & Drama Evening, Marimba Band Tour and the combined WJPS and WSPS Love the Musicchoir and marimba evening, it is hardly surprising that cultural activi- ties are regarded as so prominent this term. Adding to this exciting programme is the Annual Athletics Championship, and many sport codes, including football, hockey and softball. This di- verse programme offers every child the opportunity to be involved, either as performer or specta- tor. We are extremely fortunate to have such a full and diverse holistic programme! Term 3 is frequently referred to as the “cultural term” at our school. Considering the School Play, Speech & Drama Festival, Speech & Drama Evening, Marimba Band Tour and the combined WJPS and WSPS “Love the Music” choir and marimba evening, it is hardly surprising that cultural activi-ties are regarded as so prominent this term. Adding to this exciting programme is the Annual Athletics Championship, and many sport codes, including football, hockey and softball. This di-verse programme offers every child the opportunity to be involved, either as performer or specta-tor. We are extremely fortunate to have such a full and diverse holistic programme!

The Principal, Governing Body and Staff of WSPS cordially invite all parents and friends of the school to attend our Annual Interhouse Athletics Day that will be hosted on Wandsbeck Field on Friday, 2 August 2019. The event will start at 09h00 and finish at approximately 12h30. Tea will be served for parents during the interval. Field events take place on Wednesday afternoon, 31 July. Our “A” Marimba Band depart for Johannesburg on Friday to once again compete in the International Marimba Festival, the largest festival of its kind in the world with over 1800 participants from across Africa. The band are excited to be the only school competing in all 5 categories and we are confident that they will once again perform at a level worthy of recognition and be wonderful ambassadors for our school and community. I would like to thank the parents, supporters and sponsors for their contributions in making this tour possible. Special thanks to Mr Swart for his dedication and expertise in preparing the band, and to Mr Oosthuyzen for his meticulous planning and co-ordination of logistics for the tour. Special mention must be made of the historic addition of the staff marimba band to the competition this year. They have been training hard and are looking forward to flying up to Jo-hannesburg on Saturday morning to join in the wonderful marimba experience of the festival.

GOOD LUCK TO OUR MARIMBA BAND AS THEY TOUR TO JOHANNESBURG

SCHOOL PLAY SET TO TAKE US TO BROADWAY

The bookings for the school play will be opened this week. An average night on the streets of Broadway is thrown into disarray by two dim-witted businesspeople intent on shutting down the stages forever. The theatre folk have ONE NIGHT ON BROADWAY to save their beloved theatres in the way they know best – through song and dance! Join us for a night of Broadway’s greatest hits from the past and present. Performances run from 15 to 17 August 2019, all shows starting at 6:30pm. Tickets will be available on Quicket from Friday, 26 July 2019. Limited unreserved seats are available at R45 each. Table seating is R50 for scholars and R95 for adults OR R650 per table of 8. We look forward to seeing the community out in force to sup-port the wonderful talents of our young actors. Keep your eye on the school Facebook page for sneak previews and pictures!

TERM 3 CHARITY OUTREACH PROJECT

This term our charity project is in support of the SPCA. The amazing work done by the staff of the SPCA through the years truly honours the spirit of our school motto as they serve a crucial social need. Donations of items such as dog and cat food, blankets, water bowls and toys will be gratefully accepted. This collection will run from 10 July until 8 August. On behalf of all the furry friends at the SPCA, I thank the WSPS family in advance for their generous support.

Westville Senior Primary School’s football teams claimed Gold medals in 2 of the 4 age group categories at the annual Lyndhurst 7-a-side Primary Schools Football tournament. The highly contested event showcased some excellent young talent from schools in the surrounding areas. The school, parents and coaches were de-lighted with the boys’ achievements. The aim at the tournament was to play an at-tacking, attractive style of passing Football and this really showed as the Under 10 and Under 12 teams qualified for their age group finals. The Westville players showed great big match temperament to emerge victorious in their respective fi-nals. The school would like to thank Lyndhurst Primary School for hosting the event.

Yours faithfully

MR R BROWN

PRINCIPAL

Proving that our school motto, “We Shall Serve”, lives on in past pupils, Drew Gates has launched an initiative to collect 100 pushbikes by the end of November to hand out to children in local villages. He is hoping to instil the same love of riding he has into others by giving them the chance to share in the passion and fun of riding a bike. The fundraiser is being covered on Drew’s Face-book page, Drewgates32 and any donations you may wish to make can either be directed to Drew through his page, or brought direct-ly to school reception. We congratulate Drew on his wonderful initiative and hope to see it receive support from the WSPS family.

PAST PUPIL STILL BELIEVES IN THE SCHOOL MOTTO

Congratulations to Kai Wilson who competed in the IPT Ice Hockey Tourna-

ment in Cape Town. His excellent performances saw him emerge as the highest goal scorer for the U12 Coastal Team and he was awarded the title of MVP.

Well done, Kai.

Well done to Chloe Allison who has once again performed exceptionally well in

her MTB endeavours. She competed in the KZN Mountainbiking XCO Champi-

onship (a format of cross country lap racing) and finished in 3rd place. She also competed in the KZN Gravity Enduro Championship (a form of downhill racing)

and won her age group title. We are very proud of you, Chloe!

Well done to Pranav Mahabeer who pursued his in-terest in astronomy by attending evening classes to complete a basic astronomy course, consisting of 12 modules. The course was run by the Astronomical So-ciety of South Africa and he received his certificate at their AGM earlier this month. Congratulations, Pra-nav!
