Gamisans joined Lloveras after serv- ing as engineering manager at Velcro Europe SA for seven years, with responsibility for the technical teams at the European headquarters of this company. He has 14 years of experi- ence in technical departments in food and other fields. Carles Gamisans will lead the Lloveras technical teams, taking responsibility for the existing product range tech- nical support and the r&d projects, tasks featured in Lloveras’ strategic plan. He has also become a member of the Lloveras board of directors. Field VP sweet business unit of Symrise Kevin Field has joined Symrise as vice president, sweet business unit, North America. Field will be located in the Teterboro, New Jersey office in the United States and will report to Ray Hughes (president, Flavors North America). In his new role, he will be responsible for creating and imple- menting the strategy for growth within the confectionery, baked goods, mint and dairy categories. Field brings with him 25 years of experience in the food industry including 14 years of sweet goods experi- ence in the flavor industry. He started his career in South Africa and has also spent substantial time in the Asia Pacific and the United States. Angelich joins Virginia Dare Anton Angelich has recently joined Virginia Dare Extract Company as group vice president– marketing. In his new role he will be responsible for domestic flavor marketing and business development. ADM enhances cocoa processing facility in Brazil Archer Daniels Midland has recently announced that its cocoa processing facility ADM-Joanes in Bahia, Brazil, is in the process of undergoing substantial enhancements. These enhancements include plant process upgrades and product line expansion. An ISO 9002 accredited facility, the ADM-Joanes plant produces cocoa powder, liquor, butter and cake product lines for both Brazilian and international markets. Cargill to acquire pectin business Cargill intends to acquire the global pectin business of Citrico, a manufacturer and international supplier of cit- rus products for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. In 2002, Cargill acquired Cerestar to enhance its capa- bilities in specialty starches and sweeteners. The com- pany then formed a joint venture to ensure access to xanthan gum. By integrating Citrico’s pectin business with the Cargill/Cerestar specialty starches and xanthan gum business, the company is expecting to be better positioned to serve food and beverage companies. Obituary Jerry O. Roland passed away March 3, 2005, at age 47 after a 10-month battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Jill, and their two children, Taylor and CJ. Roland had been with SPI since September of 2003 as its marketing director. Prior to that appointment he had nearly 20 years of experience in ingredients and foods, holding positions at Kraft Foods, Coca Cola, Pfizer/Cul- tor/Danisco and Omega Foods. He was a member of the Institute of Food Technologists. Symrise acquires English flavor manufacturer Flavours Direct Symrise GmbH & Co. KG, Holzminden, Germany, has acquired the British flavor manufacturer Flavours Direct in Corby, England. With the acquisition of Flavours Direct, Symrise is strengthening its position in Great Britain and Ireland, which are large markets for snacks and savory conve- nience foods. Founded in 1998, Flavours Direct currently has 38 employees and will continue to trade under its current name as a U.K. subsidiary of Symrise. In 2004 it yielded annual sales of around 10 million euros.
