Cyber security a hot topic at Automation Fair

NHP enters Rockwell Automation ROKStar Hall of Fame!N E W S

With the continual advancements in digital technology, it is clear for all to see that we are now living in an age of connectivity.

Objects which have the capability to communicate with other objects or ‘smart objects’ are becoming more prevalent in our personal and working lives and are seemingly making our lives easier and businesses more efficient.

The fact that 99 percent of these ‘objects’ today are still not connected to the internet, illustrates the massive business opportunity for all involved in their related industries.

On a recent visit to Automation Fair in Houston, Texas, this was clearly highlighted by the fact that by the year 2020, there will be well over 50 billion ‘smart objects’ in the world, of which 27% will be ‘industrial devices’.

As a result, it has been calculated that there are opportunities that will emerge to the value of US $14.4 trillion.

These opportunities will be driven by enhanced customer experience, improved asset utilization, improved employer and employee productivity and the enhancement of innovation capability.

Clearly, as more of these smart objects begin to communicate with each other, increasing the movement of data from one device to another, the issue of connectivity, more so than proximity, will be crucial.

The need for significantly increased “connectivity” is likely to lead to the development in the future of so called “killer apps”.

These “apps” relate to the fact that whilst there will be significant investment in communication technology and infrastructure to handle the increased volume of devices being connected and the ensuing communications traffic, it will be these “killer apps” that will be able to take this data and turn it into useful information that will create opportunities for individuals and companies alike.

However, while these statistics alone illustrate an opportunity for many of us in the industrial electrical industry, at the same time it does pose a significant security risk that without adequate protection could leave organisations and even individuals exposed.

As a result, the emergence of ‘cyber spies’ and the issues around ‘cyber security’ was certainly a hot topic at the Automation Fair event. At the “South Pacific Forum” dinner hosted by NHP during the trip, we invited guest speakers from both CISCO and Rockwell Automation to discuss the subject of cyber security, given its importance. While the penetration of computer systems by hackers to steal secrets is one thing, the more disturbing event would be a hacker changing the data in these systems to devastating effect. Defence, banking, energy and water systems would be most at risk, with national security issues potentially arising as a result.

In other news, another key takeaway that emerged from Automation Fair was the news surrounding the emergence of shale oil with fracking technology, which is expected to see the USA become the next big exporter of hydrogen carbon fuels by 2020.

This is a game-changer for the US industry and generally for the power of the US economy. Whilst I still think it is the Asian century, there is no doubt the US economy, which is already number one, will continue to play an extremely significant role and with it, the oil rich Arab states may well find they have less influence globally in the decades to come.

In closing, I would personally like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and safe holiday season and a prosperous 2014.

Ever wondered what would be involved in a project that attempted to increase the capacity of a sporting stadium by almost double? Add to that the upgrade and installation of the necessary lighting, construction of two new grandstands, associated hospitality suites, terraces and food courts and you’re looking at a serious task! If that’s not enough, now try to imagine doing all this whilst maintaining existing stadium elements including a heritage scoreboard. Over the past two years that’s exactly what’s been happening at South Australia’s iconic Adelaide Oval, and supported by NHP, the project’s forthcoming completion is sure to set a new standard in Australian stadium construction!

Built in 1871 and serving as a popular city landmark since, over its 140 year history the Adelaide Oval has forged a rich sporting culture that has seen it play host to a total of 16 codes including AFL, state and international cricket, soccer and rugby. In 2011, a $535 million re-development was approved to catapault the stadium into the modern-era of sport with a world-class facility that was to include two new grandstands (Southern and Eastern) as well as a new entrance plaza amongst other upgrades. When it came to the electrical requirements of the project, local contractor Nilsen engaged local switchboard manufacturer LAI Industries, who both in turn chose a local electrical supplier – NHP.

Working together with LAI Industries and Nilsen, NHP provided service and support during the design process of close to 300 switchboard and distribution boards for the new stands and supplied a range of the components used to build them. LAI’s complete in-house manufacturing facility that enables conceptual design through to sheet-metal manufacturing, powder-coating and painting as well as electrical assembly, testing and installation, saw them utilise NHP products including Terasaki ACBs, Socomec isolators and the NHP Grizz-Bar within the boards.

“We have mainly used the low-voltage products offered by NHP but with their recent move into medium-voltage, we’ve also started to take advantage of this range. For us it’s not just about our client, it’s about having the relationship with our supplier and NHP’s quality product and service helps with that”, said Frank Iarriccio, Assistant Manager at LAI Industries.

As well as the switchboard and distribution board requirements of the new grandstands, a relocation and modification of the current distribution boards was also needed on a number of the existing light towers at the ground. In this instance, NHP and LAI were also able to provide the necessary support to ensure this could be achieved.

NHP’s involvement in the Adelaide Oval re-development highlights the advantage of local service and support and with this in mind, it was more than just the products that made the working relationship between NHP and LAI so successful on this landmark project.

“The Adelaide Oval project is one of the largest projects we’ve seen in Adelaide and a major challenge has been the time-frame in which the boards were required. By delivering the products on time and providing the local support, NHP have helped us greatly in terms of delivering the project successfully”.

“At LAI we have strong relationships with the NHP Sales Representatives and knowing that they’re here to support us after hours as well as during business hours makes it a lot easier when it comes to doing business”.

“If a customer asked me would I like to use NHP, I would say definitely, due to the service they offer, their quality products and that they are very easy to deal with”.

Despite the grand-scale construction of the project, in an effort to maintain the nostalgia at the ground created by the existing Moreton Bay Figs and heritage scoreboard, these iconic monuments will remain untouched throughout the project which is set for completion in early 2014.

(above) NHP products used in the REMSAFE system included Allen-Bradley safety distributed I/O, GuardLogix relays and safety contactors.

(above) The REMSAFE field isolation station that would be typically located in strategic locations such as a conveyor’s tramp metal removal

access platform.

The REMSAFE Remote Isolation System. One lockable isolation switch. Two push buttons. Three minutes to isolate multiple isolators simultaneously, without the need for an electrician.

NHP has supported ICM Technologies Pty Ltd (ICMT) in Western Australia to deliver a safety-rated remote isolation system for mines and ports. REMSAFE systems in use in the Pilbara have cut the time to safely isolate high volume ore conveyors from between forty and ninety minutes – down to less than three.

“NHP has shared the four year journey to develop and commercialise REMSAFE,” ICMT Director and Chief Executive Officer Mike Lane said. “Rockwell Automation’s Allen-Bradley® safety-rated equipment and software from NHP have been critical to developing our world class product.”

“Mining and port applications include car dumpers, conveyors, pump sets, railroad switches, reclaimers, shiploaders, train loaders, stackers and in-pit crushing and conveyor systems” says Lane.

As a machine safety system, REMSAFE integrates control and automation technology to isolate and monitor all energy sources to equipment under control: pneumatic, hydraulic and electric energy to drives. It also interfaces with SCADA and is remotely monitored. REMSAFE is designed to be capable of the strict Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL3) safety rating and is failsafe. It is not a remote lockout for a control system – that may be capable of being bypassed. REMSAFE isolates all motive power to drives then monitors and continually reports on that isolation.

“Interlocks and algorithms prevent any step being bypassed or taken out of sequence,” explains Jack Mross, Principal Safety Engineer at ICMT. “Redundancies, self health checks, remote monitoring and a safety-rated communications system make up the package.”

Through automation, REMSAFE eliminates the risks faced by electrical workers operating isolators in switchrooms. By reducing time to isolate and de-isolate equipment to less than three minutes, there is no pressure to take an isolation shortcut for production reasons.

“We wanted to take electricians out of the arc-flash zone, and eliminate fatalities arising from workers relying on an ‘E stop’ push button or rope switch – instead of a full current, power isolation – before going into the field for repairs or maintenance,” co-inventor Mike Lane said.

“Early model REMSAFE systems on Pilbara iron ore mine and port HV conveyors paid for themselves within days of commissioning by cutting isolation times by 95% or more. Now we are delivering orders in a climate where mine assets must maximise their production capacity to remain competitive,” Lane said.

Leasing of the REMSAFE system can reduce the outlay to a fraction of the additional revenue generated by the accelerated efficiency.

“NHP’s Allen-Bradley and GuardLogix® components are at the heart of a system that is engineered for simplicity. The mine worker has a REMSAFE panel at the equipment’s control point.

There is one lockable isolation switch to operate and two buttons to press. Indicator lamps and the HMI show the progress of the isolation, all viewable on SCADA. No step can be bypassed,” said Jack Mross.

“NHP and Safety Technology Specialist Craig Imrie, along with their local service and support of the Rockwell Automation platform in training, software and ease of use of the range simplified our choices for our flagship REMSAFE safety and production system.”

It was this combination of technical expertise and product support from Craig Imrie and the local NHP Sales Team including Louw VandHeerdan that contributed to the successful REMSAFE product delivery. From the organising of stock delivery to meet project deadlines to general day-to-day support, both Craig and Louw made sure that ICMT’S needs were met as and when they were required.

NHP congratulates ICMT for REMSAFE earning a place as a finalist in the 2012 Western Australian Innovator of the Year Awards. We look forward to continuing the journey as REMSAFE now takes our patented safety-rated Rockwell Automation products and expertise to a world market.

“The flexible software and advanced automation available in our systems makes for one of the highest performing machines on the market and helps provide the best return on your investment”.

From the point of harvest, getting fruit from the farm to your dining table is an immensely logistical exercise – especially when these dining tables across the globe demand a year round supply of quality produce in a highly competitive marketplace.

At Paramount Citrus (Delano, California), they are fully aware of this challenge and cultivate and harvest more than 47,000 acres of fresh citrus that include mandarins, oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruits. Pivotal to their customer promise of high-grade fruit is an industry leading system for sorting each piece of produce by weight, size, shape, colour and surface blemishes amongst other criteria. Working with local supplier NHP, New Zealand based manufacturers, Compac Sorting Equipment (Compac), are the proud designers and builders of this system – the InVision 9000.

Compac provide quality turn-key solutions for the global post-harvest food handling equipment industry and at the Paramount Citrus facility, this is certainly the case. Here, their technology and innovation capability is helping the world’s largest citrus sorting and packing facility prepare 4000 bins of mandarins into 800,000 bags up to 20 hours a day, six days a week. Designed and built by Compac, the 40-lane sorting and packing line comprises of Compac’s industry leading InVision 9000 system for sorting each piece of fruit as well as a number of automation options such as autonomous bin stacking robots, automated bin filling systems and packing lines.

“When we get a request from a fruit pack-house for a machine to grade their produce, we’ll design a customised system for them to do so. The main reason our products are successful in the world market is our leading technology and innovation”, said Graeme Prichard, Electrical Component Buyer at Compac.

“We spend a lot of time on research and development to ensure we stay ahead of the field and our customers have the confidence they are receiving the best system for them and their individual application”.

Using four cameras per lane, the InVision 9000 is able to view from the top and sides of the fruit covering 100% of the surface area of each piece of produce. With up to 60 images able to be captured while the fruit passes through the line, the accuracy achieved is extremely high, resulting in the separation of damaged fruit prior to shipping and the best return from the crops.

A major component to the build of these customised systems is the Allen-Bradley® range of products and software available from NHP, with Senior Electrical Engineer at Compac, Baden Crabb, clearly recognising just how important quality components are to his company’s final product.

“The flexible software and advanced automation available in our systems makes for one of the highest performing machines on the market and helps provide the best return on your investment”, he said.

“Our association with NHP is based around their quality product offering and the level of service that they provide to go with it. Their Allen-Bradley range is integral to our offering and because every job we do is customised, NHP help us with providing equipment that is suitable for a range of countries and specifications around the world”.

As well as their involvement in the componentry for the InVision 9000 sorting system, NHP are also able to provide a range of components to help Compac with their extended solution. At the Paramount Citrus facility this includes traceability compliance that is integrated with the sites ERP system as well as washers, accumulators, packing systems and more.

“At Compac we’re proud to have an association with NHP and a big advantage is their support. They provide the full service from supply to support and their local stockholdings are very important to us – I’d have no hesitation recommending them”, Mr Crabb continued.

TUV Rheinland is the leading international body for the certification of safety and quality of products, services and management systems. Being able to offer TUV certified products is an important aspect of NHP’s commitment to safety and from a product support point of view, it is equally important to have TUV certified staff.

Within NHP’s offering, many safety products are TUV certified and with this in mind, as a company we have made a significant investment in ensuring we have the expert staff to compliment this range.

“At NHP we are proud to have three TUV certified members in our Safety Team to service our customers in Australia and New Zealand. This really is a major point of difference in the market place and demonstrates our committment to our customers“, said Justin Farrell, Business Manager – Technology Specialists Group.

“Having TUV certification instills a certain level of confidence in our customers – they know that they can trust in the advice and guidance that our team offers“.

To watch a video on NHP’s TUV certified staff and what it means to you, simply scan the QR Code.

In response to the changing landscape of International Machinery Safety Standards, NHP have designed a range of valuable Safety Standards Workshops to ensure you’re on top of safety.

In recent years there has been an increased awareness of the importance that safety systems play in managing risk. When coupled with the array of sophisticated technologies that is available, there is much confusion on how to ensure safety system design is acceptable and indeed, safe. Add to that the numerous standards now available to provide guidance on the development of safety systems, and trying to understand which standard to use and how to apply them heightens this confusion.

The Safety Standards Workshops from NHP provide valuable information on the evolving machine safety industry including an explanation of the legislation and supporting documents - so attendees understand the role standards play in achieving their legal obligations. As well as this, the workshops also explore the different sections of relevant standards including risk assessment, design process and safety categories.

Attendees will also receive a certificate upon course completion as well as a series of white-papers and take-away notes to ensure they get the most out of their investment in safety.

NHP holds regular half and full-day safety workshops and for more information on specific courses, scan the QR code or simply search for ‘Safety Training’ on the NHP website.

By offering the new range of Multiflex 316 stainless steel, which is standardised around the mild steel offering whilst maintaining the same best-selling design, NHP are now ideally positioned to cater for all your enclosure needs.

Moving to a single product platform offers a broad array of advantages to the customer including a vast reduction in the complexity that can often be experienced when it comes to accurate product selection for your application. By partnering with NHP for their enclosure needs, customers will only need to be familiar with the 316 stainless steel product platform and furthermore, the accessories are now completely compatible with both enclosure lines.

“This is an important achievement for both companies. Our target has been reached: to provide perfectly tailored solutions for trends in Australia and New Zealand and to come up with the best enclosure applications”, said Ignacio Sepulveda, Eldon Product Manager.

Manufactured using leading edge technology, the 316 stainless steel enclosure lines are designed to meet highly demanding functional and aesthetics needs. With this in mind, the range is ideally suited for the food and pharmaceutical industries, outdoor applications and marine environments as well as use in complex applications requiring increased corrosion resistance.

With Eldon’s reputation of exceeding customer satisfaction with its products, this meant the range extension made perfect sense to Geoff Thorp, NHP Business Manager - Enclosure Systems and Control.

“Both Eldon and NHP put customers at the centre of our business and that is why together we are able to offer the ideal range of enclosure solutions.

With sophisticated design, perfection in ergonomics and handling, our range of quality enclosure solutions meet the most stringent protection and corrosion resistance demands to protect the electrical installation from break-down.”

The Eldon 316 Stainless Steel Floor Standing Enclosure portfolio comprises bayable and welded enclosures with standard dimensions ranging from 1800 x 600 x 500mm up to 2000 x 1200 x 600mm.
