Tips from beer aficionadoLew Bryson on enjoyinga beer festival:
Here are some tips to help you enjoy ourfestival. The most important tip of all is toremember that it’s a festival: it’s abouthaving fun. Relax, talk to the brewers, taste the beers, talk to your friends, getsomething to eat, and enjoy the day.
• Try something new. If you’re a Guinness lover, try a brisk, bitterIndia Pale Ale (IPA). If you’re a hophead IPA freak, try some smooth sophisticatedlagers. If you’re new to all of this, try a refreshingly different wheat beer.
• Start light. While you’re trying new stuff, take it easy at first. If you jumpright into the big beers early you’ll blow out your taste buds. If you’re in doubt on what’smild or less assertive, ask.
• Talk to the brewers.Ask them about the beer. What does it tastelike, what’s special about it, what food does it go well with, and if you like it, ask whereelse you can find it.
• Talk to each other. Compare beers, compare impressions, shareinformation. It’s a beer community, and we’re all helping each other enjoy this. Beer is asocial lubricant; make some new friends.
• Rinse. We’ve put rinse water and dump buckets throughout the fest. Use themso your next beer doesn’t taste like your last beer. Pour about an ounce, swirl, anddump. Fresh mug!
• Drink water all afternoon. All the pros drink water, atleast one glass of water to every two glasses of beer; one to one is even better. Alcoholtakes water out of your system; put it back.
• This is not a beat-the-clock!This is about sampling andtasting beers: new ones, favorites, and special brews. Be moderate.
• Eat. Eating slows the absorption of alcohol. Beer on an empty belly is a quickticket to Drunkland. If you didn’t have lunch, get right over to the food stands and fillup.
• Stick around. We’ve got some great restaurants in Newtown, includingfestival sponsor Isaac Newton’s, where they have a great selection of draft and bottledbeers. Why not stay for dinner?
