Community Education is a program that connects local citizens and resources through community engagement and collaborative partnerships to improve our schools and the community as a whole. A minimum number of registrations is necessary before a class can be offered. Suggestions as to what courses should be offered are always appreciated. Additional courses will be offered if there is sufficient demand and if an instructor is available. LEGO  DESIGN  I  (Bee  Smart  Learning,  Sheila  Rahn)  Entering  Grades  1-­‐3       Fees:  $73     Jefferson  Elementary  Cafeteria  June  9,  10  &  11       8:30-­‐11:30  a.m.   Minimum  8,  maximum  36  Your  child  will  learn  science  and  math  concepts  while  working  with  materials  from  the  Lego  Educational  Division.  Children  will  learn  how  to  use  levers,  pulleys,  and  gears  in  order  to  build  projects  such  as  carousels,  drawbridges  and  conveyor  belts.  This  class  offers  great  hands  on  learning  opportunities  for  the  beginner.  This  course  will  expand  your  child’s  knowledge  of  science  and  math  concepts.  Your  child  will  gain  confidence  in  his/her  ability  to  understand  how  simple  machines  work.  You  will  build  projects  including  a  crane,  catapult  and  racecar.  The  fees  include  a  take  home  prize!    LEGO  DESIGN  2  (Bee  Smart  Learning,  Sheila  Rahn)  Entering  grades  4-­‐7       Fees:  $73     Washington  Elementary  Cafeteria  (door  #2)  June  9,  10  &  11       8:30-­‐11:30  a.m.   Minimum  8,  maximum  36  This  class  will  focus  on  building  Lego  Vehicles  with  Lego  Technic  elements  from  the  Lego  Educational  Division.  Your  child  will  gain  an  understanding  of  how  wheels,  axles,  levers  and  gears  work  together  to  make  vehicles  move.  The  children  will  have  the  opportunity  to  hook  up  a  motor  and  a  battery  to  their  vehicles  and  race!  Using  some  of  the  math  and  science  concepts  learned  in  school  and  in  this  class,  your  child  will  build  Battlebots  out  of  Lego  materials  from  the  Lego  Educational  Division.  They  will  work  with  a  team  to  create  vehicles  that  will  compete  in  the  battle  ring!  Your  child  will  learn  about  torque,  tension,  force,  friction  and  compound  gearing.  Bring  your  imagination  and  your  competitive  spirit;  this  class  is  high-­‐speed  fun!  The  fees  include  a  take  home  prize!    CANVAS  CREATIONS  (Bee  Smart  Learning,  Sheila  Rahn)  Entering  Grades  2-­‐8       Fees:  $75     Minimum  8,  maximum  36  June  9,  10  &  11       12:30-­‐3:30  p.m.   Washington  Elementary  Art  Room  You  will  have  fun  painting  with  your  friends.  Start  with  a  blank  canvas  and  acrylic  paints  and  learn  the  basics  about  brush  strokes,  mixing  paint  and  basic  painting  techniques.  This  will  be  an  enjoyable  time  to  paint  with  friends!  You  will  bring  home  three  creations  at  the  end  of  class.  Display  them  as  stand-­‐alone  or  as  companion  pieces.  All  materials  are  supplied,  Aprons  are  available,  but  we  suggest  that  you  dress  accordingly  as  acrylic  paints  do  not  wash  out  of  clothes.    HAPPY  FATHER’S  DAY  (Missy  Fluegge)  Wednesday,  June  10     2-­‐3:15  p.m.         Jefferson  Elementary  School  Cafeteria  Fees:  $5  (supply  fee  of  $15  payable  to  Missy  the  day  of  class)   Grades  K-­‐6  We  can’t  tell  you  all  the  details  about  Dad’s  special  gift,  because  it  is  a  surprise.  But  we  can  tell  you  he  will  love  the  present  you  are  going  to  make  for  him!  When  we  are  done  creating  this  one-­‐of-­‐a-­‐kind  gift,  we  will  make  a  card  and  decorate  a  gift  bag,  so  you  can  keep  your  surprise  a  secret.

SUMMER  BAND  CAMP  Students  entering  6th-­‐8th  grade  June  8-­‐12  Directors:  Ann  Ayer  and  Pat  Nelsen  Monday  through  Thursday   1-­‐3:30  p.m.  Friday  9  a.m.-­‐7  p.m.  Fees:  $65  (includes  a  camp  t-­‐shirt)  Band  Camp  will  be  a  week-­‐long  workshop  involving  rehearsals  in  a  large  ensemble,  sectionals  for  like  instruments  and  fun  musical  games.  Camp  will  take  place  in  the  New  Um  High  School  Band  Room  (enter  door  #4)  Monday  through  Thursday.  On  Friday,  the  band  will  travel  to  the  Cities  to  perform  their  songs  at  North  Plaza,  downtown  Minneapolis  as  part  of  the  Summer  Lunchtime  Performance  Series.  The  performance  will  be  followed  by  a  fun  afternoon  at  the  Mall  of  America’s  theme  park,  “Nickelodeon  Universe”.    EAGLE  POWER  PROGRAM  June  8-­‐August  6  (Monday  through  Thursday)  No  camp  July  4  through  July  10.  New  Ulm  High  School  The  Eagle  Power  Program  is  an  enrichment  opportunity.  It  is  not  a  requirement  of  the  Activities  Department  or  any  of  the  High  School  sports  teams.  The  New  Ulm  Summer  Training  Program  is  available  to  all  current  New  Ulm  athletes  (including  incoming  freshman  and  7th  &  8th  graders).  This  program  is  designed  to  give  our  athletes  the  opportunity  to  gain  a  competitive  edge  through  strength  and  conditioning.  All  athletes  will  benefit  from  this  camp  and  are  encouraged  to  attend.  Our  strength  and  conditioning  specialists  design  all  of  our  programs.  Our  camp  is  implemented  by  our  own  coaches.  This  gives  our  athletes  a  unique  opportunity  to  continue  to  develop  relationships  with  their  coaches  outside  of  their  particular  sport.    Session  1:  7:30-­‐9:30  a.m.  (athletes  currently  in  the  program)  Session  2:  9-­‐10:30  a.m.  (7th  &  8th  grade  athletes)  Session  3:  9:30-­‐11:30  a.m.  (incoming  freshman,  varsity  level  and  newcomers  to  New  Ulm      athletics)  Session  4:  6-­‐8  p.m.  (accommodates  those  who  cannot  attend  morning  sessions)    If  another  time  is  preferred  for  your  family,  please  contact  Coach  Ortmann.  Example:  if  a  younger  sibling  is  in  the  junior  high  program  and  there  is  a  need  for  them  to  drive  together.    Fees:  $75  high  school   $50  7th  &  8th  graders      Students  who  qualify  for  free  and  reduced  lunches  will  need  to  contact  coach  Ortmann  on  an  individual  basis  and  be  able  to  show  documented  proof  of  qualification.    For  more  information  contact  Coach  Ortmann  at  [email protected]  or  call  him  at  507-­‐401-­‐1937.

(Enter  door  #4)    This  production  is  open  to  all  students  entering  3rd-­‐9th  grades  for  the  2015-­‐16  school  year.  There  is  NO  cost  to  participants  for  this  our  18th  annual  Prairie  Fire  Children’s  Theatre  production.  Students  will  spend  and  exciting  week  rehearsing  the  show  and  will  present  two  performances  –  Friday,  July  10  at  7  p.m.  and  Saturday,  July  11  at  1  p.m.  Auditions,  rehearsals  and  performances  will  take  place  in  the  New  Ulm  Senior  High  School  Gymnasium  located  at  414  South  Payne  Street  in  New  Ulm  and  everyone  who  participates  will  receive  a  part  in  the  production.

Library  Cooperative.        MINNESOTA  PROUD  AUTHOR’S  SERIES          All  programs  will  be  held  in  the  meeting  room  of  the  New  Ulm  Public  Library  beginning  at  7  p.m.    The  New  Ulm  Public  Library  and  New  Ulm  Area  Community  Education  are  collaborating  and  are  excited  to  bring  three  Minnesota  authors  for  speaking  engagements.  The  series  is  made  possible  in  part  by  a  grant  provided  by  the  Traverse  des  Sioux  Library  Cooperative  and  was  funded  with  money  from  the  Minnesota  Arts  and  Culture  Heritage  Fund.    Thursday,  April  16     Doug  Ohman,  “Barns  of  Minnesota”.  Doug  is  a  photographer  and  popular  public  speaker.  His  photographs  are  featured  in  the  “Minnesota  Byways”  series.    Thursday,  April  23       Mike  Roberts,  author  of  “The  Last  Keeper  at  Split  Rock”.  Mike  was  the  last  lighthouse  keeper  stationed  at  Split  Rock  when  it  closed  in  January  1969  and  then  wrote  a  book  about  it.  The  book  is  a  memoir  about  his  active  U.S.  Coast  Guard  military  duty  on  the  North  Shore  of  Lake  Superior.    Thursday,  April  30     Cathy  Wurzer,  author  of  “Tales  of  the  Road,  Highway  61”.  Cathy  unearths  stories  about  historic  buildings,  abandoned  sites,  decaying  structures  and  more  as  she  travels  down  Highway  61  and  into  the  past,  spotlighting  famous  and  fascinating  locations,  many  of  them  little  remembered  today.
