It looks like One Night Stand (ONS) is going to be the Event of the Year in Tasmania and for a short while (more than a One Night Stand) St Helens and the Break O’Day area will be in the ‘stage light’ of music lovers around Australia. How are we limiting waste at the eventIn an effort to limit waste, inside the One Night Stand event we have organised for there to be Recycling, Food & Organics and Waste bins. These will be emptied as required. There will be skip bins located at the entrance to the event, one on the corner of Tully/Young Street, one half way down Tully Street and one in the Morty’s carpark to limit waste between the business centre and the event. We have also arranged extra wheelie bins to be located throughout the St Helens business centre and the foreshore which will be emptied frequently from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. All other bins in outlying areas will be monitored over the weekend and attended to as required.

Carparking for the One Night StandCouncil has been working with local property owners to open up carparking sites for the One Night Stand. These carparks will be managed by local community groups who will pocket any proceeds from managing these areas.Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page as we will be releasing these locations once they are finalised. They will be signed and there will be traffic management in place as well to make sure the areas are safely accessible and easily located.Traffic ManagementWe are almost ready to publicly release the traffic management plan for the One Night Stand, we are just waiting on final approval from State Growth. Once this is approved we will upload it to our website and share through Facebook.

The St Helens Pharmacy looking fantastic!

Keep an eye on our website as there are more and more events

popping up every day.

One Night Stand Tips for residents - Be prepared1. Leave your lights on, even if you aren’t home. If you have security lights at the front of your house leave them on all night, if not leave the lights on in your front room. This will discourage people from coming on to your property and it will also look like there is someone home.2. Don’t leave your wheelie bin or vehicle on the street. There will be a lot of foot traffic around so to reduce the chances of vandalism or theft, keep your bin, car, boat or caravan in your yard. Your kerbside waste collection will be as per your normal collection day and time. 3. Expect some noise! Unfortunately a large concert like this is going to mean loud music as well as loud people travelling to and from the event. There is not much we can do about this except reassure you that it is only for one night!4. There will be extra police in the area. We have been liaising with Tasmania Police who will be providing extra officers not just for the event but the day before and after as well. They will be highly visible and as such will be a deterrent for any bad behaviour.

5. There will be extra lighting. We have been identifying black spots and high pedestrian traffic areas and have organised additional lighting for these areas. Well-lit areas are proven to reduce the incidences of unruly behaviour.6. Expect extra traffic. This may cause congestion and could affect your travel times so keep this in mind if you are planning any outings over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, particularly the Saturday. We do have traffic management plans in place which also include road closures and reduced speed zones and we will be working hard to keep a continual flow of traffic in the area. 7. Leave your pets indoors. Because of the noise and the thousands of extra people in the area, if possible it would be a good idea to leave your pets inside or at least locked up in your yard. This is about keeping your animals safe and relaxed. 8. Consider getting your shopping done early. We expect that concert goers could start coming to our area as early as Thursday or sooner so it may be a good idea to get your shopping

etc. done before they arrive as it may be hard to get a park as there will be extra traffic around.

We understand that this event and the prospect of so many people descending upon our little town might be intimidating but it is also a once in a lifetime opportunity for our community. Remember, it is only one night and one weekend of craziness and we hope that you are all more excited than worried, but if you do have concerns, please give us a call on 6376 7900.

Residents will have noticed a large hole in the ground near the waterfront as work has commenced on a major upgrade of the Esplanade Sewage Pump Station.TasWater contractor Water Industry Solutions is undertaking works on the pump station while also finalising works on the renewed Jason Street rising sewer main as part of the St Helens sewerage upgrade. Improvements in the efficiency and capacity of the system have already been noted following completion of the new Esplanade sewer rising main last year. These two new mains, combined with the new SPS, will help significantly reduce the risk of sewage overflows

into Georges Bay.These construction works will continue into the coming months and may involve a day of impact piling in the coming weeks. TasWater and its contractor will ensure the worksite is as safe as possible while One Night Stand is underway however the community are asked to take care around the construction site. TasWater appreciates the patience of the local residents, particular those utilising the carpark and waterfront area, and have been working with locals to ensure access to the fish weighing station is still available. The carpark will largely become available again into the busy summer period.

Message from TasWater Youth Facebook pageThe Youth of our area have been busy with the One Night Stand as well and have put together a Facebook page called St Helens One Night Stand, 2018. This page is where you can find out about other events that are taking place around the region as well as watch a few of the youth’s videos. So far you can see Madeline Bell’s interview with the Mayor, Harley Newman’s tour of St Helens as well as a road safety video starring Tyler Birch. But keep an eye on the page as there is more coming! A big thanks to Kirsti Lette-Chapple and Simon Holmes for all their help making this happen.

Youth One Night Stand Champions Tyler Birch, Harley Newman and Piper Chapple with the ABC news team.

WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS!Are you attending the One Night Stand? Would you have a few hours to spare to help out as a volunteer? You won’t have to work all day so you will still get to enjoy the event plus you will also get a FREE triple j designed volunteer t-shirt, tote bag and drink bottle. Please help us make this the best One Night Stand ever. Duties will include things like pre-event set-up, monitoring rubbish bins and just keeping an eye on people to make sure they are ok. You will need to hold a current Working with Vulnerable People Card. Please download the information pack at www.bodc.tas.gov.au and send your applications to [email protected]
