Cars & Coffee IV Presented by Harper Auto Square Article and photos by Cyrus Taft

Rolling out of bed at 6:00 am on a Sunday morn-ing is not my favorite thing to do but sometimes a special occasion requires it. When I heard that the SMJC was being featured at the fourth Cars & Coffee gathering at West Town Mall I knew I would have to be there.

If you have not been to one of these events, it is a very informal get together of all types of cars for a couple of hours on Sunday morning. And when I say all types, I mean all types. I don’t know the car count for the latest show but it had to be many hundreds. It is hard to see all the cars within the two hour win-dow.

The SMJC was being featured this time in recogni-tion of our 13 years of service to Jaguar drivers in east Tennessee and for our support of the American Cancer Society. It was great to see over twenty SMJC members and their cars in our designated parking area. Most were from the Knoxville area but Gerry and Becky Mitchell and Peter Davis made the trip from the Johnson City area. Peter brought his bright red E-type coupe which attracted a large crowd.

Also attending were Gary Cobble, Tom Ballentine, John and Gerda Sapper, Robert and Judy Margeson,

An open E-type bonnet always draws a crowd.

Some of the SMJC members enjoying a beau-tiful morning with their Jaguars..

Two beautiful XK150s’s were a rare treat.

The new F-type puts Jaguar back in the true sports car market.

Cars & Coffee continued

Gary Volpe, Jerry Landis, Richard Lockhart, John and Barbara Rigby and son David, and Chris Shoening. I know there were other club member there that I did not see so I apologize for those not mentioned.

The Jaguars on display included two very nice XK150S OTS’s, two F-types, five XJSs, several XJ se-dans, one Mark 2, and one E-type.

Some of the other interesting cars I saw included at least two Ferraris, a Maserati, an Avanti (owned by

former SMJC member Ed Barrett), a 1940’s vintage Dodge Power Wagon fire truck, a Caterham, a 1957 Ford Fairlane with a hardtop convertible, a few old Mini’s, a heavily customized Corvette drag racer, and on and on.

If you like cars, you will really like Cars& Coffee. When the next one rolls around, you might want to haul yourself out of bed at 6:00am to join in the fun.

My personal non-Jaguar favorite.

It was good to see a couple of other British classics at the show.

The F-type looks so fast standing still that its wing is deployed even when parked.

Southern British Car Show Article and photos by Gary Cobble

I met John & Barbara Rigby and Richard Lockhart at the Lenoir City Cracker Barrel early on the morning of Sat-urday, November 2, 2013. Several others from the English Auto Society were also there to caravan to the Southern British Car Club’s “Thanks for the Memories” car show that day at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. This show is a very well established show dating back probably 25 years and draws entrants from Georgia, Tennessee, and Ala-bama mainly.

The caravan arrived at the Choo Choo around 10:00,

just in the nick of time for late registration. The Rigbys placed their Scimitar and Rover in the show while I dis-played my MGB. Gary Moss came in later with his new Lotus.

We enjoyed the fine weather and the lunch at the Brew House. After helping one of the Entrants with his non-running Austin Healey 3000 by installing a new con-denser, everyone left home for Knoxville to get a bit of sleep and meet up again for Harpers Cars & Coffee early Sunday morning!

Clockwise from top left: Gary Cobble’s MGB, Rigby’s Rover, other Jags, Gary Moss’ new Lo-tus, an MGTC, and Rigby’s Scimitar.

My 1994 XJ12 has had its share of problems over the years but it has never had to be flatbedded home until recently. I drove it to Lowe’s for my weekly visit and when I came out, the Jag would not start. It cranked nicely but there was no hint of any fire. I waited about 30 minutes for it to cool down, and dis-connected and reconnected the battery in hopes that might fix an intermittent problem. No luck, so I called AAA for the 2 mile flatbed ride home.

When a car suddenly won’t start my first thought is always the crankshaft position sensor because of previous experience with two other cars. In fact about 6 months earlier, the same flatbed driver had to bring my 1992 Dodge pickup home when it sud-denly would not start.

After studying my service manual and doing a little online research I found out that my 6.0 liter V12 has two crankshaft sensors, one at the front and one at the flywheel. Failure of either one will cause a no start condition. However, there is a simple test to figure out which one might be the problem. If the front sensor is not working there will be no spark and the fuel injectors will not be firing while cranking. If it is the rear sensor at fault, there will be no spark but the fuel injectors will be pulsing.

I verified I had no spark and then listened for the fuel injectors with a long screwdriver. No pulses, so

the front sensor was the likely culprit. Before buying a new sensor, I wanted to just check the connector first. Looking at the wiring diagrams, I located the connector near the oil filler cap at the front left side of the engine. I unplugged it and it looked fine so I connected it again the cranked the engine. Started right up. Problem solved, at least for now. If it hap-pens again I will probably make a more permanent fix but at least I now know which connector to fiddle with.

While I was under the hood, I noticed some play in the throttle linkage and discovered a rubber bush-ing was shot at the intake manifold crankarm on each side. Fortunately Harper’s had two bushings in stock so my trusty assistant, Julia, picked them up for me on one of her trips to Knoxville.

At first it was not clear how to disassemble the linkage to replace the bushing. My service manual was no help on this one. I have an old spare V12 en-gine which happens to have the same linkage ar-rangement so I used that to figure out how it comes apart. All that was needed was to disconnect the short vertical link and slide the splined crankarm away from the bushing about 1/4”. This allowed the shaft which connects to the throttle body to move far enough to come out of the throttle shaft and be re-moved from the bushing.

The bushings are a snug fit in the mounting plate but a little silicone spray lubricant did the trick. While I had it apart I oiled all the pivot points and cleaned everything up. Works great now, no lost motion. The first side took about 30 minutes to complete but the

second one only took about 10 minutes. This might be the easiest repair I have ever made on this car.

Next up, rear transmission mount bushing and spring.

XJ12 Adventures continued

By loosening the crank arm, the shaft could be removed.

New bushing installed.
