(NGSS)

Page 2: Next Generation Science Standards

Illinois is among the 26 lead states that have worked collaboratively to update science standards, called Next Generation Science Standards.

Eight states have adopted NGSS: Rhode Island, Kentucky, Vermont, Maryland, Kansas, Delaware, California and Washington.

Where did they come from?

Page 3: Next Generation Science Standards

The Illinois Building Capacity for State Science Education (IL BCSSE).

This is a diverse group of K-12 educators, higher education, informal educators and representatives from business and industry

Who is involved?

Page 4: Next Generation Science Standards

NGSS was adopted by the Illinois State Board of Education on February 19, 2014. The NGSS will go into effect beginning in the 2016-17 School Year.

When?

Page 5: Next Generation Science Standards

Common Science Curriculum throughout the United States

Prepare students for future Careers and College

Have an organized set of standards for all to follow

Start Earlier and Get Farther 60% of careers require post-secondary

education

Why?

Page 6: Next Generation Science Standards

Science is broken down by topic Each topic has:

◦ Specific Objective(s)◦ 3 basic concentrations

Engineering and Science Disciplinary Core Ideas Crosscut Concepts

All topics have a Common Core Literacy and Mathematics component
