MWSCC

Hello again SCC Members! It was great to see so many of you at last month’s dinnermeeting. It may have been cold outside but that did not stop many of us from coming outand enjoying a warm meal and a great speaker at the Radisson Hotel O’hare. For our firstMWSCC Educational Dinner Meeting of the year, Joseph Albanese of 3V, Inc. gave anenlightening presentation on “Energy Efficient Emulsification Using HydrophobicallyModified Alkali Swellable Amphipathic Polymers.” I’m sure this presentation on theevolution of emulsions sparked some creative ideas on how this type of chemistry can helpto ‘green up’ your emulsions by using cold processed, lower energy emulsification. Forthose of you that missed the meeting, we will post the presentation on our website for youto enjoy too.

In addition to our great speaker and dinner, I am so excited to bring back trivia! I would liketo extend a huge thank you to our previous Chair, Duey Vos, for organizing such a fun, yetchallenging, trivia game. Congratulations to the winning table that walked away with Targetgift cards! I hope that everybody enjoyed the game and possibly talked to somebody newtoo. If you have any ideas or suggestions for trivia or would like to get involved in any ofour committees, please let me know. Specifically, our Chapter plans to hold a TechnicalSymposium in October and we need a Chair and volunteers. We also need volunteers tohelp with our 65th Anniversary book that we would like to distribute at the TechnicalSymposium. As mentioned previously, our dedicated volunteers are what make thisChapter successful and we will make sure to find a match for your unique talents.

I am very excited to support the Terracycle Cosmetic Recycling Program that Cindy Yuintroduced to our Chapter. Please make sure to bring your empty cosmetic bottles (don’teven worry about rinsing) and place in the box at the registration table. It’s that easy! Forevery unit that we collect and send to TerraCycle, they will credit us with points that we canredeem for a payment of $0.01 per point to the non-profit organization of our choice. Thisyear we chose to support the Girls 4 Science Program, where “the mission of Girls 4Science (G4S) is to increase science literacy amongst girls ages 10-18 through scientificdiscovery and collaboration with external partnerships.” For questions on Terracycle, please email Cindy Yu at [email protected] and for more information on the G4Sprogram, please contact Elaine Harris, also a G4S Board member, [email protected].

Please help me welcome Nicholas Giebel, a recent PhD graduate from the Medical Collegeof Wisconsin, who has volunteered to be our new Newsletter editor. I look forward toworking with all of our dedicated committee members and MWSCC members to make thisa fun and exciting year.

In addition to our monthly meetings, please make sure to mark your calendars for theseexciting educational events:

March 17th: TWSCC Holistic Symposium, Brooklyn Center, MNMay 3-6: 106th AOCS Annual Meeting and Industry Showcase that through a collaboration with the SCC will include SCC coursesJune 22-24: Allured C&T Summit, Philadelphia, PA will include SCC coursesDecember 11-12: Annual Scientific Meeting, New York Hilton, SCC Courses scheduled on December 10th

I hope to see you at the February meeting. Stay warm MWSCC members!

Invitation to Project I: February 26, 2015, 8am to NoonHadley Junior High School in Glenn Ellyn, IL

We are contacting you to ask for your support for Project Innovation bybeing a presenter of your profession at our event. Project Innovation, orProject “I”, is an initiative to inspire students to pursue careers inscience, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). We are both highschool students who are very passionate about the math and sciencefields and we want to foster this energy towards math and science inother students. Through Project I, our mission is to inspire students topursue a career in STEM and promote lifelong learning.

In the spring of 2014 we had the first annual Project I event and hostedover twenty professionals and more than 400 students attended theevent. The companies and organizations who joined with us for thisevent included, but were not limited to, Google, The Field Museum,The Adler Planetarium, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and UIC.

To execute this mission, Project I is a day of exploration for incominghigh-school students on Thursday, February 26th, 2015, at HadleyJunior High. Invitation to Project I (continued):

We would like your company to have a fifteen to twenty minutepresentation and any interactive activity that both enlightens andcaptures the minds of the students. The details for the content can beworked out at a later time. We want these activities to model whatcareers in math, science, and technology industries look like. Studentsoften see teachers or salesmen at work, but do not realize how ascientist or an engineer works on a day-to-day basis. This will allowfor a greater understanding of the careers available in STEM fields, some of which are more obscure to the public eye. We are asking ifyour company would help us empower these students by participatingin the event or sponsoring us through a representative to present. Weare also looking for a handful of corporate sponsors to donate $500toward the event.

We are passionate about the students we are working with, but wouldalso like to promote the companies who so generously have offeredtheir time and support. By participating in Project I, your company willbe advertised throughout the event. We hope you considerparticipating this year; we would be thrilled to work with you!

Sincerely,

Claire Wild and Shay KikerCo-Founders and Co-CEOs of Glenbard West STEM Club and ProjectIMuseum of Science and Industry Jr. Science Cafes:

This fall series of Jr. Science Cafes will be offered toschool groups coming to the Museum for field trips and the capacityper session is 35 students. Each session lasts 30 minutes and you arewelcome to lead one or both sessions if you choose to participate.”
