President’s Message
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
As we are beginning a new year, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank
everyone for all the hard work in 2015.
Starting with our most recent event the Christmas party. Gretta Palya did a
great job in organizing the dinner. We had a lot of members attend so this
made it more fun. In addition to the usual attendees, we also had a special
guest, Schnauzer-claus! Gretta brought her 6 foot Schauzer-claus to over
see the party and a good time was had by all!
I also want to thank everyone who serves on a committee, organizes an
event, or takes part in club activities that we enjoy each month. In 2015 we
hosted the Standard Schnauzer Club of America National Specialty. This is
the largest single event that we host, every few years. It is a tremendous
undertaking! It was a great success and I want to thank Pat White for being
the National Specialty Chair. There are far too many volunteers to name,
however I want each of you to know that I thank you and appreciate
everything you did to contribute to the success of the event.
Now is a good time to be thinking about 2016. We will be having several
events throughout the year. So WE NEED YOU to volunteer and help. The
best way to enjoy the club and our dogs is to help us plan and organize the
events. The committee list is in this issue. Please take a look at the various
committees and see where you can help out. As I have said before, the
best way to get to know the club and it's members, who will become your
friends, is to get involved. If it takes a village to raise a puppy, it takes far
more then that, to keep this club successful. I am only an email away, so
let me know what you would like to do, [email protected]!
Our next meeting will be at the home of Elaine and Nicole Miller on January
9th. We will be looking at the highlights of the National DVD as our
program. We had so many wonderful dogs at this event, we can review and
appreciate our Standard Schnauzers all over again. We will be having a
board meeting on 1-2-16. I will be sharing information with the membership
at the general meeting, about the Board meeting, and what we plan for
2016.
I hope to see more of everyone in 2016!

BRAGS AND NEWS!
• From Betsy Davison:
“GCH Blue Line's Asta went Best of Opposite
Sex at Eukanuba on Sunday, December 13th in
Orlando, Florida. Thank you to Jessy and
Roxanne for their terrific handling of Asta, who
continues to be the no. 1 Standard Schnauzer
bitch in Breed points.”
• From Jill Mitchell:
"Our puppy Ciaran (Celtic Cross Beyond
Reasonable Doubt) completed the requirements
for his Barn Hunt Novice (RATN) title by going
High in Class at the SuperPup Barn Hunt Trial
held in Severn, MD on December 12. Moved up
the next day, he qualified in 2nd place for one
leg on his Barn Hunt Open (RATO) title. He just
turned a year old later that month.”
• From Candace Craig:
My Noah (Celtic Cross High on a Mountain)
earned his RATO title at Splashdown Farm
(SuperPup Trials) on December 12. He was 1st
Place in his class for his title leg!”
• From Nicole Miller:
“We had a great time at Eukanuba in
Orlando,FL. We missed the mark in the National
Owner Handler Finals (though we did get a
swanky lapel pin) but had our socks blown off by
Finn (GCH Steinwald's Celtic Cross Fionn Mac
Cumhaill) taking a Group 2 in the Owner
Handler competition at the Central Florida
Working Group Association Show on Friday
under Judge Mrs Grace Black. Both Remy and
Finn enjoyed the trip and thought the treats were
great, but the bunking arrangements were sub-
optimal.
• From Melissa and Jay Jennings:
“CH Cuyahoga Dream Moon Over Parma, better
known at Rhett, participated in a 6 week C-
WAGS Level 1 Obedience League held at Pup
N Iron in Stafford, Virginia. The teams had to
demonstrate their ability to heel on a loose lead,
stay, find front, perform a recall, and finish. Rhett
took a first place in the league with a final score
of 99.5 and an overall score of 97. The CWAGS
judges were Laurie Williams, owner of Pup N
Iron, and Jackie Pratt. Rhett was handled by
Melissa Jennings.
And…we just received notification from the AKC
that CH Celtic Cross Scarlett O!Hara (Scarlett) is
eligible to participate in the 3rd AKC Rally
National Championship in Tulsa, OK on March
18, 2016. Scarlett!s scores in the 4 Novice Rally
Trials she participated in were 96 in the
Hyattsville Dog Training Club Trials; 97 in the
Baltimore County Kennel Club Trial; 96 in the
Old Dominion Kennelly Club; and 91 in the
Greater Fredericksburg Show. Scarlett was
handled be Melissa Jennings in all 4 trials.”
• From Rosemary Miller:
“We had a fun at Eukanuba this year! My dear
older boy Paddy - GCH Celtic Cross Paddy
Whacked – was best veteran under judge Dr.
Anthony D DiNardo. He enjoyed hamming it up
5
for the crowd and acted like a young fellow
again!
PADDY IN THE VETERAN!S GROUP
• From Michelle Bell:
“We had a great New Year!s Day at Barn Hunt --
Mohner's Woodstock, Dylan, earned his second
RAT novice leg and a second place at the Barn
Hunt VA! Trial in Chesapeake today. Centara
Dacia Dubonet, Penelope, earned her RATN
today. We moved up to Open but need to work
on our dark tunnel skills. CH. Halcyon's Bullet
with Butterfly Wings, Bullet, earned his first
novice barn hunt leg and a third place. It was a
cold and very muddy New Years day but we had
a good time with the friendly barn hunt crew in
Chesapeake.”

NEW RATN PENELOPE!
RESCUE UPDATE ON
BILLY AND BRAXTON!
From Lovey Lyons, PVSSC Rescue Chair:
I just received an update on Billy, who was the
older boy we placed this summer. The Alburys
had 2 older standards that they wanted a
companion for. One was a male that had cancer
and the other was a female. They lost Jack in
September and 2 weeks ago Peeka died in her
sleep. Rebecca said they are truly grateful for
Billy. I expressed the club!s sympathy, and told
them we would put them back on the waiting list.
They have requested a younger standard if one
becomes available.
She sent me a picture of Billy and I am sending
it along to share with the club. He is doing very
well as you can see.
Our other boy, Braxton, was adopted just before
Christmas by Jack Barrett and Jeff Gould and
their son Dylan. They own two other SS, 14-
year-old Gus from Gail Mackiernan and Max
from Cindy Millard. Here!s a photo of Gus, Dylan
and Braxton (right) – everyone is getting along
beautifully!

Do You Have DEATH in Your Pocket?
No, this is not about a lethal weapon. It is something far more innocuous in appearance that could still
mean DEATH for your dog! We are talking about everyday items like chewing gum, breath mints, or
candy that you might have right now in your pocket, purse, or on a shelf in your home.
What do these things have in common? They contain XYLITOL – a natural sweetener that is increasingly
used in many “low-cal” treats, dental products and in sugar-free foods developed for diabetics. Xylitol is
harmless to humans, and in fact in gum, candy and dental products is actually beneficial as it has anti-
tooth decay properties.
It is, however, DEADLY to dogs – and in very low quantities! Almost everyone is aware that chocolate is
toxic to dogs. However Xylitol is ONE HUNDRED TIMES more toxic – yet (in a survey by a humane
group) only 50% of dog owners were aware of this!
Even small amounts of Xylitol can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure or even
death in dogs. Impacts can occur within 15 minutes of ingesting the toxic material!
In both humans and dogs, the
level of blood sugar is controlled
by the release of insulin from the
pancreas. Xylitol does not
stimulate the release of insulin
from the pancreas in humans.
However, when non-primate
species (e.g., a dog) eat
something containing Xylitol, the
Xylitol is quickly absorbed into the
bloodstream, resulting in a potent
release of insulin from the
pancreas. This rapid release of
insulin results in a rapid and
profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that occurs within 10-60 minutes
of eating the Xylitol. Untreated, this hypoglycemia can be life-threatening. Intake of very high doses of
Xylitol has been implicated in liver failure in dogs.
The dose of Xylitol that can cause hypoglycemia in the dog has been reported to be 50 milligrams (mg) of
Xylitol per pound of body weight (100 mg per kg). [That is, for a SS, only 7/100 of an ounce!] The higher
the dose ingested, the more the risk of liver failure. The most common source of Xylitol poisoning that the
Pet Poison Helpline gets called about comes from sugar-free gum such as Trident or Orbit. With certain
brands, only 9 pieces of gum can result in severe hypoglycemia in a 45-pound dog, while 45 pieces would
need to be ingested to result in liver failure. With other common brands of gum (which contain 1 g/piece
of gum), only 2 pieces would result in severe hypoglycemia, while 10 pieces can result in liver failure. As
there is a large range of Xylitol in each different brand and flavor, it is important to identify whether a toxic
amount has been ingested. Unfortunately the amount of Xylitol in various foods is proprietary, although
there is a move to have FSDA require a warning label on Xylitol-containing items, including the amount.
If you suspect that your pet has eaten a Xylitol-containing
product, please contact your veterinarian or Pet Poison
Helpline (800-213-6680) immediately. Do not induce
vomiting [unless the item has just been ingested; then
use hydrogen peroxide] or give anything orally to your
dog unless specifically directed to do so by your
veterinarian. As some dogs may already be
hypoglycemic, inducing vomiting can make them worse!
It is important to get treatment for your dog as quickly as
7
possible.
Symptoms of Xylitol toxicity develop rapidly, usually within 15-30 minutes of consumption. Signs of
hypoglycemia may include any or all of the following:
Vomiting Weakness Uncoordinated walking or standing
In severe cases, the dog may develop liver failure. Dogs that develop liver failure from Xylitol poisoning
often initially show signs of hypoglycemia.
A presumptive diagnosis of Xylitol poisoning is made if there is a known or possible history that the dog
ate something containing Xylitol, coupled with symptoms of hypoglycemia. Since toxicity develops rapidly,
your veterinarian will not wait for a confirmed diagnosis before beginning treatment.
There is no antidote for Xylitol toxicity, although treatment with sugar supplementation, IV fluids, and
liver protective drugs are beneficial. Fast and aggressive treatment by your veterinarian is essential to
effectively reverse any toxic effects and prevent the development of severe problems.
If your dog has just eaten Xylitol but has not yet developed any clinical signs, your veterinarian may
induce vomiting to prevent further absorption, depending on what your dog's blood glucose level is. If
clinical signs have developed, treatment will be based on the symptoms that are being shown. Since
Xylitol toxicity can cause both low blood glucose and low potassium levels, your veterinarian will perform
blood work to determine whether these problems need to be treated. In all cases, your dog will require
hospitalization for blood sugar monitoring, dextrose administration, intravenous fluids, liver protectants,
and any other supportive care that may be needed. Blood work should be monitored frequently to make
sure that blood sugar and liver function remain normal.
The prognosis is good for dogs that are treated before symptoms develop, or for dogs that develop
uncomplicated hypoglycemia that is reversed rapidly. If liver failure or a bleeding disorder develops, the
prognosis is generally poor. If the dog lapses into a coma, the prognosis is very poor.
IMPORTANT! If you personally use products
containing Xylitol, make sure they are stored safely, out of
reach of your pets. Keep purses that could contain gum, candy
or breath mints out of your dog!s reach. Do not share any food
that may contain Xylitol with your pets. Only use pet toothpaste
for pets, never human toothpaste.
If you see "naturally sweetened" or "natural sweetener"
promoted on the product, check the ingredients for "Xylitol" or
its chemical classification, "sugar alcohol." Note, anther sugar
alcohol, Sorbitol, is also widely used and it is SAFE for dogs.

NEWS FROM ROSE MILLER!
Fanny has left us and gone on a great
adventure! Otherwise known as CH Celtic
Cross Hanky Panky, Fanny caught Judge
Stavros Chrysidis! eye in more than one way
when she was exhibited at the PVSSC Sweeps
at our specialty show in July. Not only was
Fanny awarded Best in Sweeps, but after the
judging, Stavros and Helle Chrysidis visited
Fanny with a proposition - to come and live in
Denmark! After some discussion, we decided,
after Fanny achieved her US championship, she
would go and live at Mohners Schnauzers. As
the photo shows, Fanny has made friends and
settled in nicely! She will be shown in countries
that allow crop and dock, and will hopefully have
some pretty puppies!
While we said a tearful goodbye to Fanny, we
have a new addition from Denmark! Mohner!s
X-factor Xamba arrived in the US! What a
whirlwind! Xamba is not slowed down by
anything! She walked into the house and took
over! She had a road trip to Eukanuba, and had
great fun making friends with everyone she met.
As you can see, she is always the life of the
party! We look forward to showing her when
she is old enough!
We look forward to more fun with ourDanish friends!

DOG AGE CHART
By Dr. Karen Becker
(submitted by Pam Cooney)
[NOTE: this relates to the article in last month!s
Wiretap on why some animals live longer than
others.]
Are you the parents of a senior or geriatric dog?
I ask because many people don!t realize how
quickly dogs age compared to humans, and are
surprised to the their still-active “puppy” is
actually middle-aged or even heading into her
golden years.
By the time most large breed dogs are 10 years
old, they!re considered retirements age by
human standards. Giants breeds age fastest of
all, but even the littest guys at age 18 are the
equivalent of a 90-year-old human
The good news is it's possible to keep your dog
reasonably youthful – or at a minimum, mobile
and comfortable – into old age. Caring for a
happy, healthy senior means providing: Physical
and emotional comfort at each stage of your
dog's life: Balanced, species-appropriate
nutrition – especially high-quality protein:
Ongoing, regular opportunities for exercise,
socialization, and mental stimulation
