WELCOME TO ST CLEMENT’S CHURCH IN THE

UNITED BENEFICE OF DARTMOUTH AND DITTISHAM

In this service we remember with thanksgiving the life, death and resurrection of

Jesus Christ –and the giving of himself to us today in the forms of bread and wine,

which are for us his body and blood.

Through this celebration we glimpse something of the awe, majesty and mystery of

God’s eternal presence; and also something of the love, fellowship and friendship

which binds us together as the pilgrim people of God as we seek his will for our

lives.

Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest

of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love. For all involved, particularly

the candidates but also parents and godparents, it is a joyful moment when we

rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, making serious promises and

declaring the faith.

Hearing and doing these things provides an opportunity to remember our own

baptism and reflect on the progress made on that journey, which is now to be

shared with this new member of the Church.

The service paints many vivid pictures of what happens on the Christian way.

There is the sign of the cross, the badge of faith in the Christian journey, which

reminds us of Christ’s death for us. Our ‘drowning’ in the water of baptism, where

we believe we die to sin and are raised to new life, unites us to Christ’s dying and

rising, a picture that can be brought home vividly by the way the baptism is

administered.

Water is also a sign of new life, as we are born again by water and the Spirit, as

Jesus was at his baptism. And as a sign of that new life, a lighted candle is given, a

picture of the light of Christ conquering the darkness of evil. Everyone who is

baptized walks in that light for the rest of their lives.

As you pray for the candidates, picture them with yourself and the whole Church

throughout the ages, journeying into the fullness

of God’s love.

Jesus said,‘I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.’ John 10.10

About this Eucharist The hymn numbers are displayed on the boards around the church, and in this order of

service.

All are very welcome to stay behind after this Eucharist for refreshments .

The toilet, which has full access and facilities for the disabled, is located under the tower on

the right hand side.

The church is fitted with an induction loop for the hard of hearing.

People of all ages are very welcome at this and any of our services. There is a children’s

corner at St Clement’s. Please feel free to move around with them during the service if they

indicate that they need a change of scene.

the fruits of your redemption;

for you are alive and reign with the Father

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

All Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

A Reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians (11.23-26)

For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on

the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given

thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in

remembrance of me.’ In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying,

‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in

remembrance of me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you

proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

5

This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

We stand to greet the Gospel

Choir: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

Choir verse

All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Alleluia,

We remain standing to hear the gospel. When the gospel is announced the reader

says:

The Lord be with you

All and also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John (6.51-58) All Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to the Jews: ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever

eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the

world is my flesh.’

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his

flesh to eat?’ So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of

the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh

and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my

flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my

blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because

of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that

came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But

the one who eats this bread will live for ever.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise to you, O Christ.

All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Alleluia,

SERMON

Hymn 26 ‘Alleluia, sing to Jesus’

BAPTISM

The Presentation of the Candidate

The priest addresses the whole congregation:

6

Faith is the gift of God to his people.

In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling.

People of God, will you welcome this child and uphold him in his new

life in Christ?

All With the help of God, we will.

The priest addresses John

Do you wish to be baptized?

I do.

The priest then says to the parents and godparents:

Parents and godparents, the Church receives this child with joy. In

baptism he begins his journey in faith. Will you care for him, pray

for him, draw him by your example into the community of faith?

Will you walk with him in the way of Christ, and help him to take

his place within the life and worship of Christ’s Church?

Parents & godparents answer:

With the help of God, we will.

The Renunciation

The priest addresses the candidates directly, or through their parents, godparents

and sponsors:

In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light.

To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him.

Therefore I ask:

Do you turn to Christ?

I turn to Christ.

Do you repent of your sins?

I repent of my sins.

Do you renounce evil?

I renounce evil.

The Signing with the Cross and Anointing for Baptism

The priest traces the sign of the cross on the candidates’ forehead with the oil of

catechumens saying:

7

Christ claims you for his own receive the sign of his

cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ

crucified.

All Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin,

the world and the devil, and remain faithful to

Christ to the end of your life.

The Prayer over the Water

The ministers and candidates gather at the baptismal font, and the

priest stands before the water of baptism and says:

Praise God who made heaven and earth,

All who keeps his promise for ever.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God,

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

The prayer over the water follows. The priest praises the God the Father for his

generosity and love, recounts the great deeds that He did in times gone by and

completed in the work of his Son, and asks that he send the Spirit on the water to

give new birth and new life to the candidate.

At the end all respond:

Amen!

The Profession of Faith

The priest addresses the parents, godparents, and the whole congregation:

Brothers and sisters, let us now affirm, together with those who are

being baptized, our common faith in Jesus Christ.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and

life, the one for whom we exist?

All I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son, Jesus Christ, who took

our human nature, died for us and rose again?

All I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to

the people of God and makes Christ known in the world?

All I believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church!

All This is our faith!

8

We believe and trust in one God, the Father, the Son and

the Holy Spirit.

The Baptism

The priest pours Holy water on the candidates saying:

John and William I baptize you in the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All Amen.

The Signing with Chrism & giving of the Lighted Candle

The priest anoints the newly-baptized with the Oil of Chrism, saying:

John and William, God has received you by baptism into his Church.

He now anoints you with the chrism of salvation,

so that you may remain forever a member of Christ, who is

Prophet, Priest, and King.

All May the Lord pour upon you the riches of his grace,

and may you daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit.

The priest gives the newly-baptized a candle lit from the Paschal Candle, saying:

God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness,

and has given us a place with all his people in his glorious light.

John and William, you, too, have received the light of Christ:

walk in this light all the days of your life.

All Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father!

Amen.

The Welcome and the Peace

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism:

William, by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body.

All We welcome you into the fellowship of faith; we are

children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you!

The priest may pray for the newly-baptized, and he introduces the Peace:

THE PEACE

We stand and the celebrant introduces the Peace, and then says:

In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high has

broken upon us to give light to those who dwell in darkness and the

shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

9

All and also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

We exchange a sign of peace with those around us.

THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS

Hymn 322: Love is his word

The gifts of bread and wine are brought to the altar, and a collection is taken.

Invitation to Prayer

We remain standing as the celebrant invites us to join in the offering of the

Eucharist.

Pray my brothers and sisters that this our sacrifice may be acceptable

to God the almighty Father.

All May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the

praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of

all his Church.

The celebrant says the Prayer over the Gifts:

Holy God,

holy and strong,

holy and immortal,

give us the bread of everlasting life,

and make us branches of the true vine.

All Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

We remain standing for the opening of the prayer

The Lord be with you

All and also with you

Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them up unto the Lord.

Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

The celebrant says or sings the preface of the prayer, which praises God for his

mighty acts. At the end of which we sing

All Holy, holy, holy, holy

Lord of power, Lord of might,

Heav’n and earth are filled with glory.

Sing hosanna evermore

10

Blest and holy, blest and holy

he who comes from God on high.

Raise your voices, sing his glory,

praise his name for evermore.

The celebrant now recalls the Last Supper and calls the Holy Spirit to come upon

the gifts of bread and wine, that they may become for us the body and blood of

Christ, whose presence we honour with bells and sometimes with incense.

Great is the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died;

Christ is risen;

Christ will come again.

As the Eucharistic Prayer continues we recall the death and resurrection of Christ,

and offer our prayer to the Father.

As the prayer reaches its conclusion we give our bold acclamation

All Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

The celebrant introduces the Lord’s Prayer with these or other suitable words

Believing the promises of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray

All Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF BREAD

The celebrant breaks the consecrated bread and says

We break the bread of life

and that life is the light of the world.

11

All God here among us,

light in the midst of us,

bring us to light and life.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, you take away the sin,

the sin of all the world.

Give us mercy, Give us mercy,

give us mercy, Lamb of God. (repeat)

Lamb of God, you take away the sin, the sin of all the world.

Grant us peace, Lord, grant us peace, Lord, grant us peace,

O Lamb of God.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

This is the Lamb of God

who takes away the sins of the world.

Blessed are those who are called to his supper.

All Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,

But only say the word, and I shall be healed.

The celebrant and people receive Holy Communion.

As the host or chalice is given the minister says

The body of Christ

The blood of Christ

To which we say Amen before we receive.

Communicant members of other Christian Churches are welcome to receive

communion here. Non communicants are warmly invited to the altar for a

blessing. Please indicate this by bringing this pew slip with you and bowing your

head.

We remain seated to sing the Communion hymn as part of our devotions.

Hymn: 29 ‘An upper room’

During the distribution the choir will sing an anthem

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

We kneel as the celebrant introduces the prayer with the words ‘Let us pray.’

All praise to you, our God and Father,

for you have fed us with the bread of heaven

and quenched our thirst from the true vine:

hear our prayer that, being grafted into Christ,

12

we may grow together in unity

and feast with him in his kingdom;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Banns of Marriage are read and notices relating to the life of the parish are given

now

Hymn: 501 ‘There’s a wideness in God’s mercy’

THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL

May the Father from whom every family in earth and heaven receives

its name strengthen you with his Spirit in your inner being, so that

Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith;

And the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

All In the name of Christ. Amen.

THOUGHTS ON THE READINGS The first reading (Gen. 14 :18-20) (not read at 11.00am) Melchizedek's offering of bread and wine prefigures that of Christ. The Second Reading (1 Cor. 11:17-26, 33). The Lord's Supper unites Christians with their Lord. Divisions among the Corinthians are a scandal. They contradict the unify-ing purpose of the Eucharistic celebration, the memorial of the saving death and res-urrection of Jesus. In the Gospel (John 6 :51-58) Jesus proclaims solemnly that in the Eucharist he is the true bread of life. The Eucharist food gives eternal life to those who receive it worthily.

Please remember in your prayers: the baptismal anniversaries of Niamh Condliffe and Hattie Woolvin Dr Andrew Langley, appointed as Assistant Curate to the Benefice, and his family. Rebecca Feeney, being ordained Deacon on 30th June. The sick: Margaret and Frank Wetenhall; Patricia Camp; Eileen Hobson; Barry; Doreen Renbold; Margaret Jackson; John; Simon Atwell; Jane Snodgrass; Sandra Chase; Vickie; Michelle; David Wright; Carol; Anne Hinsley; Philip; Penny; Roy Mills; Tony; Tiffany; Emma.
