REAL REPENTANCE

Mark Driscoll

Guest Article

Let me explain to you what repentance is and is not. For some of you, this will be completely new, you’ve never heard this. For others of you, this will be information that you’ve got bits and pieces of throughout the course of your life. For some of you, this will be revisiting things that I’ve taught you before, but maybe you still need to do. And for the rest of you, maybe you do know and practice repentance, and this will help clarify your ability to counsel others. I want you to pay attention, this is really important stuff. If you don’t know what to do with sin, you’ll ruin your life, and destroy anyone who is connected to you. It’s that big of a deal.

1. RELIGIOUS REPENTANCE

So, true repentance is not religious repentance. Religious repentance is this: “I see your sin, not my own. I confess your sin, not my own. I’m really unhappy with your sin, but I’m not really troubled by my own.” It’s because

religious people tend to think that they are self-righteous, and pious, and holy, and better than everyone else. The result is that they think they are good, and everyone else is bad. And religious people like to busybody, and gossip, and neatnik, and nitpick, and just be a perennial pain in the Levi’s. That’s what religious people do. And the way this works is they’re always glad to talk about all the things you’ve done wrong, but they never say things like, “It was my fault. I’m sorry. I was wrong.” Some of you are married to that person; I apologize. Jesus gives a story of two people going into the temple, the Old Testament equivalent of the church, and one prays with haughty eyes and head held high, full of pride. “God, thank you that I’m not like other men. Thank you that I’m better than they are. Thank you that I don’t do all these horrible things.” He’s confessing someone else’s sin. A second man in the story goes in, and he’s not filled with pride, he’s filled with grief. And he looks to the ground. He can’t even raise his eyes, and he simply declares, “God, have mercy on me. I’m a sinner.” He’s dealing with his own sin, not anyone else’s sin. He’s filled with humility and not pride. And Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, this man, and not the other, left justified, declared righteous in the sight of God.” Religious people are notorious for overlooking their own sin, and talking about everyone else’s, sometimes couching it in the form of a prayer request, so that it looks particularly holy when it’s not.

2. PAGAN REPENTANCE

Real repentance is not pagan repentance, and I tell you these false forms because there are many counterfeits of repentance. One of the aspects that distinguishes paganism from Christianity is the Bible says that God is good, and we don’t need to make God be good. He just is. Paganism assumes that God isn’t good, and we have to manipulate God, as if we could, to make God be good. And so paganism and pagan repentance is, “So if I tell God I’m sorry, then he has to do something for me.” Examples would be, “I know I shouldn’t be dating this person, but if I tell God I’m sorry, then he’s obligated to save them, and make it all better. I know that I’ve done a bad thing, but if I tell God I’m sorry, then he’s obligated to cover for me, and not let my sin get caught and found out. If I tell God I’m sorry, then he has to heal me. If I tell God I’m sorry, then he has to bless me. If I tell God I’m sorry, then he has to prosper me.” God is sovereign, and free, and good. God cannot be manipulated, and God is not obligated to anyone.

3. WORLDLY SORROW

Additionally, true repentance is not worldly sorrow. Paul tells this to the Corinthians. He says, “I perceive that you have worldly sorrow,” or some of your translations will say, “worldly grief,” and that is because non-Christians can feel bad. I talked to a guy not long ago. He said, “I feel bad. Why is that?” Answer: you’re bad. You feel bad because you’re bad. Now it all makes sense, doesn’t it? Don’t need to dig for some deep psychological investigation. You feel bad because you’re bad. God gave you a conscience. We’re his image bearers. It’s a moral rudder. We can grieve, quench, and resist the Holy Spirit, but the Holy Spirit works through our conscience, as Jesus promised he would, to convict us of sin. We also know of our sin from the Bible, and Bible teaching, and godly friends. And what happens in worldly sorrow, or grief, is we feel bad, but we don’t change. You just feel bad. And what can even happen in culture is that we set up this false religion, with false prophets, and pastors, and priests, and priestesses, and what happens then is we present a false gospel. Not to pick on him, but to pick on him, I’ll give you an example from Tiger Woods. What happened in the Tiger Woods scenario is something that happens fairly frequently. First of all, someone doesn’t repent, and they get caught. The opposite of repenting is getting caught, and that is that you didn’t come forward and say, “I’ve said or done a bad thing, or failed to say or do a good thing, I got caught,” which means “I wasn’t gonna stop unless you made me.” You get caught.

Page 5: Next Wave magazine March 2013

5

And then you have to present worldly sorrow. You have to say, “I am really sorry. I did a horrible thing. I feel really bad.” “Ideally,” your PR rep will tell you, “you should probably cry, because that will help. It shows that you’re really, really sad about what you’ve done.” And then we get basically a cultural equivalent of pagan Catholicism.

Let me unpack all of this. I grew up as a Catholic boy, went to Catholic school, and was an altar boy for some years. And the way it would work in Catholicism is you would go into the confessional with the priest. You would say, “Bless me, father, for I have sinned. It’s been so long since my last confession.” And then you would tell the priest what you did, and then the priest would say, “I declare you forgiven. I forgive you. Go say this many ‘Hail Marys,’ or ‘Acts of Contrition,’ or ‘Our Fathers’, or go do these good deeds, and then you’ll make it up to God, and everything will be okay,” something like that. So what happens in culture is someone has worldly sorrow. They know they’ve done wrong, so they need to find someone who’s in the cultural position of a priest. And just so you know, I don’t believe in any of this. Jesus is my great high priest. A priest can’t forgive me. The psalmist says,

“Against you only, Lord God, have I sinned.” So I don’t go to a priest, I go to the great high priest, Jesus. But what happens in our culture then, we’ve gotta find someone to play that morally superior role, so we get Barbara Walters, or Larry King, or Oprah, or Dr. Phil. We go get somebody to set up their stage for their show, their set, like a confessional. And the person who has sinned walks in looking very sad, and very scared, and says, “I’m really sorry for what I’ve done.” And then the person in the position of moral, spiritual authority, the priest of culture says, “Tell us about what you’ve done, and how you feel.” And then you cry, and you say the things that your PR rep told you to say. But your sins are not yet forgiven, because you need to go to purgatory and pay back, and so you go to rehab. Rehab is our cultural version of purgatory. Everybody has to go to rehab. If you’ve done something bad, you’ve gotta go to rehab, drug rehab, sex rehab, alcohol rehab, “My dad didn’t hug me” rehab, gambling rehab, whatever rehab it is. And you go to rehab for a while. It’s like purgatory, you go there and you pay your dues. And then later you get out, and you go back, and you meet with the high priest or priestess. You say, “You know what? I’m really, really sad, and I did a very bad thing, but I feel like I paid it off, and I went to rehab. And now I’ve kind of been born-again. I’m a whole new person, and I’m going to give lots of money to women, children, or animals. Anything cute, I will give money to, to show that I have sorrow.” And then all of this is told to the population, the public, the culture, and they decide whether or not you’re forgiven. They’re in the position of God. “Oh, you said you were

Page 6: Next Wave magazine March 2013

6

sorry, you went to rehab, you wrote a big check for people in need. We forgive you. You can golf again. Go and sin no more.” That’s worldly sorrow. The whole culture we live in is built on that, and people don’t change, not at the heart level. There’s no atonement, there’s no penalty paid for sin. There’s no Jesus, there’s no Savior. There’s no new life in Christ, there’s none of that, just a bunch of counterfeits—worldly sorrow. But I tell you that, not just to pick on a man, but to say that we’re all prone toward that, and our culture has this desire for something like a high priest, who forgives our sins and gives us new life. But without Jesus, we end up with a lot of impotent counterfeits. 4. MERE CONFESSION True repentance is also not mere confession. Mere confession is very confusing, particularly for Christians, because it is when someone sins, and you confront, or rebuke them, call them to repentance as John does. You say, “That was really wrong.” And they say,

“You know what? You’re right, that was terrible.” You say, “Oh good, I’m glad you recognized that. Let me hug you, and we’re all better now.” And then they do it again. You say, “I thought you were sorry.” “Oh, I was. I’m sorry again, and I’ll be sorry next week, and the week after that. I’m sorry a lot. And every time I do it, at least I’m not a hypocrite, I’m authentic, I’m honest, I’m real, I’m true. And I’ll just tell you how bad I am, and I’m gonna keep being bad.” Some of you are dating that person. Run, run, run, run Forrest run, run for your life. And they confuse you, because you’ll say, “Hey, you shouldn’t have said or done that.” “You’re right, that was wrong,” and they keep doing it. Mere confession is an acknowledgment of sin, without a repentance of sin.

5. BLAME SHIFTING

Additionally, real repentance is not blame-shifting, which is, “Yeah, something bad happened, but it’s their fault.” This goes all the way back to the garden. Adam sins, says, “God, you made a woman. She’s defective. The two of you need to sort this out.” Eve says, “Oh, don’t look at me, the devil made me do it.” She was charismatic. And the truth is that they both were morally responsible for their own transgression. We can do this. “Yes, I lost my temper, but they made me very angry.” Oh well, it’s obviously their fault. “Yes, I stole from my boss, but after all, they weren’t paying me enough.” “I did cheat on my spouse, but they weren’t meeting my needs.” Oh, you poor victim. Blame someone else.

Page 7: Next Wave magazine March 2013

7

6. MINIMIZING Real repentance is also not minimizing. What happens is you sin, someone calls you to repent, and the first thing you do is you find someone who’s done something worse. “At least I didn’t kill someone.” Oh, duckie for you, we’ll put a gold star on your “No Murder” chart, another whole day. You find someone worse than you. “You’re a terrible spouse.” “Well, at least you’re not married to so and so.” And if all else fails, hit the Hitler button, that’s what you do. Just hit the Hitler button, which is, “At least I’m not a Nazi.” Oh, that’s true. And you put yourself next to Hitler, and you’re like, “See, I look pretty good.” Yeah, compared to Hitler, everyone does. That’s not really moral high ground, but that’s what people do. It’s minimizing. “Oh, it’s not a big deal. You’re freaking out. You’re overreacting. Why do you have to get so emotional?” 7. EXCUSE MAKING Additionally, real repentance is not excuse making. “Yeah, I did it, but I had a rough upbringing. You know, I didn’t get a good education. My dad didn’t hug me. I’m genetically predisposed. My personality type is J-E-R-K. You know, there’s just— P-E-R-V, you know, my personality type is that way.”

Come and See

By Francis Frangipane

John and Andrew began

their spiritual commitment

to God's will as disciples

of John the Baptist. In

fact, they had actually

been standing near the

prophet when Jesus

walked by. As the Baptizer saw Jesus,

he cried out, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"

and from that moment the two disciples

began to follow Jesus. (John 1:35-37)

This was an insightful account. It is

John's handwritten testimony of how he

came to the Son of God. Yet, John has

deeper truths to reveal beyond this

historic portrayal. He is also going to

reveal what we should each ultimately

seek when we come to Christ.

Let's pick up the narrative. The two

disciples, having heard and believed

John's messianic proclamation about

Jesus, are now walking, perhaps

hurriedly, to catch up to Jesus. They are

within conversation range.

Then Jesus turned, and saw them

following, and saith unto them, What

seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi,

(which is to say, being interpreted,

Master,) where dwellest Thou? He saith

unto them, Come and see. John 1:38-

39 KJV

Why Come to Christ?

There are many reasons one comes to

Christ. We may seek Him for health

issues or to possess the keys to

prosperity. Perhaps we need

deliverance or are burdened with the

cares of a loved one. Yet, as the Lord

asked John and Andrew, so He asks

each of us: What are you seeking in

life? What goals compel us? When we

approach the final season of our lives,

will the things we have achieved be

transferable into eternal accounts? Or

will we have spent our time and

energies on that which is void of true

life?

Jesus asks, "What are you seeking?" It

is a very important question. The Lord

desires that we take inventory of our

passions and objectives, and then chart

our course toward heavenly values. You

see, many say they love Jesus. What

they mean is that, in time, they hope to

get around to loving Jesus. Right now,

however, they barely know Him and

almost never spend time seeking Him.

Page 10: Next Wave magazine March 2013

10

The proof that we love Him is that we

keep His commandments (John 14:15).

What must He think when so many who

say they love Him are, in fact, not loving

Him but actually having an affair with

this world? May God have mercy.

Yet, this is not your situation. In spite of

your flaws and weaknesses, you

sincerely desire to possess more of

God. You have emerged from your past

trials, determined to walk closer to the

Lord. Indeed, Christ sees this holy

desire and, to Him, it is the most

precious part of you.

The Lord's heart is also moved toward

those who follow Him, though they may

walk limping. To those wounded by

injustice or the effects of sin, the Lord's

promise remains faithful: "A bruised

reed He will not break and a dimly

burning wick He will not extinguish."

Surely, He will bring to victory the justice

due you (Isa. 42:3; Matt. 12:20).

Like John and Andrew, we, too, "behold

the Lamb of God." Just as He asked

them, so He asks us, "What are you

seeking?"

The Dwelling Place of Christ

In response to Jesus' probing question,

the disciples' answer may seem strange.

For they did not ask Him for greater

power or one of His many spiritual gifts.

Instead, they asked Jesus something

more personal, and intimate: "Where

dwellest Thou?"

I'd like us to consider the poignancy of

their answer. They wanted to know

where Jesus lived. There are times

when a question transcends the simple

boundaries of intellectual curiosity and

actually reveals one's quest in life. Such

is now the case: they are seeking to live

with Jesus. They are searching for the

dwelling place of God.

Our Father wants us to ask for spiritual

gifts and special blessings of health and

financial prosperity. To desire these

things is not wrong; it is just not enough.

Inside the heart of a God-seeker is a

quest for more. We are in search of the

"dwelling places" of God. In truth, our

hearts have been divinely programmed.

There are within us "the highways to

Zion" (Ps. 84).

Our destination is nothing less than

oneness with Christ. All fruitfulness

comes from living in spiritual union with

Jesus. In contrast, whatever we offer as

service to God that is not the result of

our union with Christ, that labor is in

vain; it is a weak comfort. For apart from

Him, we can do nothing.

John tells us in his first epistle that those

who say they abide in Him ought to walk

Page 11: Next Wave magazine March 2013

11

"in the same manner as He walked" (1

John 2:6). Abiding in Jesus leads to

walking like Jesus.

Beloved, there is yet much more to learn

and discover concerning our Lord! We

must beware of spiritual complacency.

Recall the prayer of Moses: At the end

of his life - after being used by God to

confront and defeat the gods of Egypt,

after dwelling in the Lord's glory and

beholding miracle after miracle for forty

years - Moses prayed, "You have begun

to show Your servant Your greatness

and Your strong hand." (Deut. 3:24)

You have begun? No matter how much

we attain, no matter what revelations of

God's glory are ours, we have only

begun to see His glory.

The disciples answered astutely, "Rabbi,

where dwellest Thou?" May this become

our prayer as well: Where do You live, O

Son of God? Where is Your dwelling

place? To all who feel similarly, Christ

says to us what He promised them:

"Come and see."

Dear Master, I turn to You now. You are

my life's greatest goal. I desire to live

with You, to abide in the wonder of a life

united with You.

PRAYER

Submitted by Jim Ellis

Charles Finney was

born in Connecticut

in 1792 and his

family soon moved

to western New

York. He studied

and practiced law

from 1818 to 1821. He was converted in

1820 and felt like he was called to

preach. He was licensed by the

Presbyterian Church in 1824 and was

known as a fiery evangelist. He

preached throughout New York,

Pennsylvania, Ohio, and the New

England states. His most remarkable

revival was in Rochester, New York

where nearly three thousand were

converted.

Daniel Nash started as a preacher in

upstate New York. His record there is

singularly unremarkable. At age 48 he

decided to give himself totally to prayer

for Finney's meetings. Nash would come

quietly into towns three or four weeks in

advance of a meeting, gather three or

four other like minded Christians with

him and in a rented room start praying

and bringing heaven near. It is reported

that in one town all he could find was a

dank, dark cellar, but that place was

soon illumined with holy light as he

made it the place of intercession.

When the public meetings started

Father Nash would not usually attend

but kept praying in his closet for the

convicting power of the Holy Spirit to fall

Page 12: Next Wave magazine March 2013

12

on the crowd and melt their hearts.

When opposition arose Father Nash

would pray all the harder.

Once a group of young men promised to

break up the meetings. Nash was

praying nearby and came out of the

shadows to announce: "Now mark me,

young men! God will break your ranks in

less than one week, either by converting

some of you, or by sending some of you

to hell. He will do this certainly as the

Lord is my God!"

Finney thought his friend had lost his

sense. But by next Tuesday morning the

leader of the group suddenly showed

up, confessed his sinful attitude before

Finney and accepted Christ. "What shall

I do Mr. Finney?" he asked. Finney told

him to go back to his companions and

tell them how Christ had changed his

life. Before that week was out nearly all

of the original group had come to Christ.

In 1826 both Finney and Nash were

burnt in effigy. The enemy recognized

the threat of Father Nash's prayers to

their ways of wickedness. Shortly

before Nash died in 1831 he wrote:

I am now convinced, it is my duty and

privilege, and the duty of every other

Christian, to pray for as much of the

Holy Spirit as came down on the day of

Pentecost, and a great deal more….My

body is in pain, but I am happy in my

God…..I have only just begun to

understand what Jesus meant when he

said, "All things whatsoever ye shall ask

in prayer, believing, ye shall receive."

It is interesting to note that within four

months of Father Nash's death Finney

left the evangelistic field to take a

Church in New York City. His prayer

partner in taking the enemy by storm

was gone. He whose prayers and been

the strength of the campaigns was now

in his eternal home and the loss of

power was felt.

Nash's grave is in a neglected cemetery

almost on the border of Canada in

northern New York. The tombstone

reads.

DANIEL NASH

Pastor 1816 - 1822

Laborer with Finney

Mighty in Prayer

Nov. 27, 1775 -

Dec. 20, 1831

Daniel Nash was not written up in the

papers of the day. The elite of his day

took no notice of him. There was notice

in Heaven of this humble man. Like

Paul, the demons knew him by

reputation. In his heart dwelt fully the

burning Spirit of God. Great is his

reward in Heaven.

"Charles G. Finney stands out as one of

the greatest exponents of evangelism

since the days of the Apostle Paul. All

theologians and church historians agree

that Finney had the greatest success of

any individual preacher since the days

of Paul. Furthermore, in Finney's

revivals 80 percent of all his converts

stayed saved.

Page 13: Next Wave magazine March 2013

13

"In no other revival since the days of

Paul has this been true. Moody was

mightily used of God. Yet church

historians agree that not more than 50

percent of his converts remained.

"Since the turn of the century we have

seen a great revival in the Pentecostal

movement. Yet Pentecostal leaders,

both past and present, agree that not

even 50 percent of the converts remain

true to God. No one has had the

success Finney had. Yet he never used

any kind of gimmick. He didn't rely on

sensationalism; he depended solely

upon prayer.

"In his autobiography we read that when

Finney would go into a town for a

revival, almost the entire town would

turn to God. After one such revival in

which practically the entire city was

converted, the only theater in town had

to close down because no one attended.

All the 'grog' shops, Finney's term for

what we know today as beer joints, also

had to close down after the revival.

"What was the secret of Finney's

success? He said, 'There is no more

secret, no more mystery to having a

revival than there is to a farmer's

reaping a crop. If the farmer tills the soil,

puts the seed in the ground, and trusts

God for the rain, then when the time

comes there will be a harvest.'

"'On one occasion when I got to a town

to start a revival,' Finney said, 'a lady

who ran a boarding house contacted

me. She said, 'Brother Finney, do you

know a father Nash? He and two other

men have been at my boarding house

for the last three days, but they haven't

eaten a bite of food. I opened the door

and peeped in at them because I could

hear them groaning and I saw them

down on their faces. They have been

this way for three days, lying prostrate

on the floor and groaning. I thought

something awful must have happened to

them I was afraid to go in and I didn't

know what to do. Would you please

come see about them?'

"'No, it isn't necessary,' I replied. 'They

just have a spirit of travail in prayer.'

"Finney prayed much himself. Rising

every morning at 4 o'clock, he would go

out into the country and pray until 8

o'clock."

That is from pages 25 -27 of "The

Interceding Christian" by Kenneth E.

SATAN, LET ME REFRESH

YOUR MEMORY! By Derrick and Angela Day

Bishop Derrick Day and his lovely wife Angela have combined their considerable talents to bring to you a book that will help you and those to whom you

minister with their walk with God. The Day’s are not merely writers; these folks live what they write, or (as we like to say) walk the walk! Derrick Day is the founder and Pastor of Agape Dominion Outreach and Founding Bishop of Kingdom Covenant, a ministry governance and church planting organization. He serves as the International Circle of Faith (ICOF) Chairman of North America. He is also a former Associate Pastor of His Kingdom Manifested Ministries in Centerton, Arkansas under Pastor

Laymon Hornsby. He has been faithfully studying, preaching, and teaching the uncompromised Word of God for nearly seven years. In addition to his labor in the Kingdom of God, Derrick is also a consultant in software engineering, a former columnist with the Norfolk, Virginia New Journal and Guide, and a former radio talk-show host at WNIS News Radio in Norfolk, Virginia. He is a native of Detroit, MI. Angela Day is an anointed teacher and expounder of the uncompromised Word of God. Angela is a graduate of Lamar University (B.B.A.) and the University of Phoenix (M.B.A.). She is the author of The Fasting Journal, several children’s books and is currently working on her first novel. Angela is a native of Crockett, TX. Derrick and Angela are the proud parents of five sons, Donovan, Troy, Zachary, Derrick II (Deucie), and Anthony. The boys keep them young at heart and gray in the hair! In Satan, Let Me Refresh Your Memory they bring us an uplifting look at the rightful place of the believer. Here are some excerpts. We ascribe to Satan more power than he deserves. Truth is, the power he wields is inferior to the power imparted to us by Jesus Christ. This book seeks to inform the children of God of the power given to them by their Heavenly Father and to equip them with tools to remind the devil of what the Word of God has to say about him.

Page 16: Next Wave magazine March 2013

16

This book is intended for the Citizen of

the Kingdom of God – the born-again,

blood-washed, Jesus-loving believer.

It is intended to introduce the new

believer to the fact that Satan is

powerless in the face of God’s glorious

power and the dominion the Lord has

endowed in His children.

Likewise, for the mature believer, it will

serve as a reminder of the power

available to them and the boldness

that power will give them. This book is

also useful for the non-believer. Through

these words, it is our hope the Holy

Spirit minister to those who do not know

God but feel they have reached the end

of their ability to navigate life as they

know it. Hopefully, the words on these

pages will quicken a hunger and thirst

for the Living Word of God!

Do you think you’re

ready to refresh the

devil’s memory?

Do you think you

need more time to

prepare? In either

In a recent weekly Executive Session

we discussed how the enemies of the

cross seem more committed to prayer to

their false deities than followers of Jesus

Christ demonstrate. In discussing the

challenges, understanding that there

has been some 2000 years since the

advent of Jesus Christ's earthly ministry,

we concluded that there is no organized

effort to call the people of God to daily

prayer. Granted, there have been and

remain efforts to such as the national

day of prayer but this is only to direct us

to prayer one day per year. Thus, It is

our expectation to see a global 'Call to

Prayer' where Biblical Christians

(followers of Jesus Christ) would commit

to pray on a daily basis.

Here is our challenge: Prayer - 3 times a

day. We are asking every follower of

Jesus Christ to commit to prayer three

times each day. This is a commitment to

daily prayer for the rest of our lives. This

prayer time can be anytime during the

day but we are suggesting the following:

• Morning - Pray by yourself, with your

family or those where you work or go to

school. This will help set the tone for the

day. • Mid Day - Before or after lunch

take time to pray wherever you are.

Encourage those around you to pray

with you (co-workers, peers, clients,

etc.) • Evening - pray with you family,

your friends, neighbors, etc. Encourage

places of business, church buildings,

malls, etc. to designate a place for daily

prayer. Pray for God to give us space

for REPENTACE!

Pray for your family, friends and others

who are not committed to Jesus Christ.

Pray for healing, renewal, deliverance

and more. Prayer is communication.

The key thing is to STOP what you are

doing. Take time to find a quiet place

where you can communicate with God.

We are not directing you how long to

pray. Rather we are leaving that up to

the individual or the group, but by all

means - PRAY!

Posture - in Scripture we find people

praying in a variety of postures -

kneeling, standing, laying prostrate, etc.

All of these are acceptable.

IF you would like to connect with others

who are praying in like manner please

feel free to email: JOIN THE CALL TO

PRAYER [email protected]

Burned Biscuits

-Author Unknown

Burned Biscuits - A lesson we all should

learn. (VIA: A Friend)

When I was a kid, my Mom liked to

make breakfast food for dinner every

now and then. I remember one night in

particular when she had made breakfast

after a long, hard day at work. On that

evening so long ago, my Mom placed a

plate of eggs, sausage and extremely

burned biscuits in front

of my dad. I remember

waiting to see if anyone

noticed!

All my dad did was

reach for his biscuit,

smile at my Mom and

ask me how my day was at school. I

don't remember what I told him that

night, but I do remember watching him

smear butter and jelly on that ugly

burned biscuit. He ate every bite of that

thing...never made a face nor uttered a

word about it!

When I got up from the table that

evening, I remember hearing my Mom

apologize to my dad for burning the

biscuits. And I'll never forget what he

said, "Honey, I love burned biscuits

every now and then."

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy

good night and I asked him if he really

liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped

me in his arms and said, "Your Mom put

in a hard day at work today and she's

real tired. And besides--a little burned

biscuit never hurt anyone!"

As I've grown older, I've thought about

that many times. Life is full of imperfect

things and imperfect people.

I'm not the best at hardly anything, and

I forget birthdays and anniversaries just

like everyone else. But what I've learned

over the years is that

learning to accept each

other's faults and choosing

to celebrate each other’s

differences is one of the

most important keys to

creating a healthy, growing,

and lasting relationship.

And that's my prayer for you

today...that you will learn to take the

good, the bad, and the ugly parts of

your life and lay them at the feet of

God. Because in the end, He's the only

One who will be able to give you a

relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a

deal-breaker!

THE RACIST ROOTS OF GUN CONTROL

Clayton E. Cramer

This appeared in the Kansas Journal of Law & Public Policy, 4:2 [Winter, 1995].

The historical record provides compelling evidence that racism underlies gun control laws - and not in any subtle way. Throughout much of American history, gun control was openly stated as a method for keeping blacks and Hispanics "in their place," and to quiet the racial fears of whites.

Racist arms laws predate the establishment of the United States. This is not surprising, for blacks in the New World were often slaves, and revolts against slave owners often degenerated into less selective forms of racial warfare. The perception that free blacks

were sympathetic to the plight of their enslaved brothers, and the "dangerous" example that blacks could actually handle freedom often led New World governments to disarm all blacks, both slave and free.

Starting in 1751, the French Black Code required Louisiana colonists to stop any blacks, and if necessary, beat "any black carrying any potential weapon, such as a cane." If a black refused to stop on demand, and was on horseback, the colonist was authorized to "shoot to kill." [ Thomas N. Ingersoll, "Free Blacks in a Slave Society: New Orleans, 1718-1812", William and Mary Quarterly , 48:2 [April, 1991], 178-79.] Because of fear of Indian attack, and the importance of hunting to the colonial economy, slave possession of firearms was at times a necessity in Louisiana. But the colonists had to balance their fear of the Indians against their fear of their slaves. As a result, French Louisiana passed laws that allowed slaves and free blacks to possess firearms only under very controlled conditions. [ Daniel H. Usner, Jr., Indians, Settlers, & Slaves in a Frontier Exchange Economy: The Lower Mississippi Valley Before 1783 , (Chapel Hill, N.C.: University of North Carolina Press, 1992), 139, 165, 187.] Similarly, in the sixteenth century the colony of New Spain, terrified of black slave revolts, prohibited all blacks, free and slave, from carrying arms. [Michael C. Meyer and William L. Sherman, The Course of Mexican History, 4th ed., (New York, Oxford University Press: 1991), 216.]

Page 23: Next Wave magazine March 2013

23

Often the relationship between racism and gun control was direct and obvious. On other occasions, the connection was more complex. One example of this complex relationship between economic struggle, slavery, and possession of arms can be found in seventeenth century Virginia. The aristocratic power structure of colonial Virginia found itself confronting a political challenge from lower class whites. These poor whites resented how the men who controlled the government used that power to concentrate wealth into a small number of hands. These wealthy feeders at the government trough would have disarmed poor whites if they could, but the threat of both Indian and pirate attack made this impractical; for all white men "were armed and had to be armed…" Instead, blacks, who had occupied a poorly defined status between indentured servant and slave, were reduced to hereditary chattel slavery, so that poor whites could be economically advantaged, without the

upper class having to give up its privileges. [Edmund S. Morgan, "Slavery and Freedom: The American Paradox," in Stanley N. Katz, John M. Murrin, and Douglas Greenberg, ed., Colonial America: Essays in Politics and Social Development, 4th ed., (New York: McGraw-Hill, Inc, 1993), 280.]

In the Haitian Revolution of the 1790s, the slave population successfully threw off their French masters, but as the Revolution degenerated into a race war, existing fears increased in the French Louisiana colony, and among whites in the American slave states. When the first U. S. official arrived in New Orleans in 1803 to take charge of this new American possession, the planters sought to have the existing free black militia disarmed, and otherwise exclude "free blacks from positions in which they were required to bear arms," including such non-military functions as slave-catching crews.

MLK’s Arsenal & The Racist Roots of Gun Control in the U.S.

By Candace Lanier

Martin Luther King, Jr., known for peaceful resistance, at the same time recognized the importance of gun ownership for self-defense. King understood the risks involved in being an outspoken civil rights leader, living in Jim Crow era Alabama, and took measures to protect himself, his family and others around him.

King was a gun owner. In fact, he had a few guns–one visitor to the King family home described King’s supply of weapons as an “armory.”

Additionally, William Worthy, a journalist who covered the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, reported that he almost sat on a loaded gun while visiting King’s parsonage.

King had also applied for a concealed carry permit, but was turned down. According to John M. Snyder:

“At one time, King applied for a permit to carry a concealed handgun, but was denied. He was concerned for his personal safety, just as are a lot of law-abiding American citizens. “

Even though King’s house had just been bombed, his application for the concealed carry permit was still rejected. Few people in the US needed a permit to carry more than Reverend King did in 1956, but since the local police had some discretion in their decision making, King, who no doubt met the requirements of the law, was rejected nonetheless. This was the norm when the applicant was black.

An example of discriminatory gun legislation, via Examiner.Com:

“This Reconstruction Era law in Louisiana is a perfect example:

No negro who is not in the military service shall be allowed to carry fire-arms, or any kind of weapons, within the parish, without the special written permission of his employers, approved and endorsed by the nearest and most convenient chief of patrol.”

Kurt Hofmann writing for Examiner.Com elaborates on the racism behind these laws:

Page 25: Next Wave magazine March 2013

25

“UCLA Constitutional law professor Adam Winkler–hardly likely to be mistaken for a fervent gun rights advocate–readily acknowledges bigotry as the father of “gun control,” as he explained in an interview with the Wall Street Journal:

In his research for ‘Gunfight,’ Winkler also noted a close intersection between guns and racism. ‘It was a constant pressure among white racists to keep guns out of the hands of African-Americans, because they would rise up and revolt.’ he said. ‘The KKK began as a gun-control organization. Before the

Civil War, blacks were never allowed to own guns. During the Civil War, blacks kept guns for the first time – either they served in the Union army and they were

allowed to keep their guns, or they buy guns on the open market where for the first time there’s hundreds of thousands of guns flooding the marketplace after the war ends. So they arm up because they know who they’re dealing with in the South.’”

YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW

Good morning said a woman as she walked up to the man sitting on ground. The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly accustomed to the finer things of life. Her coat was new. She looked like she had never missed a meal in her life. His first thought was that she wanted to make fun of him, like so many others had done before.. "Leave me alone," he growled.... To his amazement, the woman continued standing. She was smiling -- her even white teeth displayed in dazzling rows. "Are you hungry?" she asked. "No," he answered sarcastically. "I've just come from dining with the president. Now go away." The woman's smile became even broader. Suddenly the man felt a gentle hand under his arm. "What are you doing, lady?" the man asked angrily. "I said to leave me alone.

Just then a policeman came up. "Is there any problem, ma'am?" he asked.."No problem here, officer," the woman answered. "I'm just trying to get this man to his feet. Will you help me?" The officer scratched his head. "That's old Jack. He's been a fixture around here for a couple of years. What do you want with him?" "See that cafeteria over there?" she asked. "I'm going to get him something to eat and get him out of the cold for awhile." "Are you crazy, lady?" the homeless man resisted. "I don't want to go in there!" Then he felt strong hands grab his other arm and lift him up. "Let me go, officer. I didn't do anything." "This is a good deal for you, Jack" the officer answered. "Don't blow it.." Finally, and with some difficulty, the woman and the police officer got Jack into the cafeteria and sat him at a table in a remote corner. It was the middle of the morning, so most of the breakfast crowd had already left and the lunch bunch had not yet arrived... The manager strode across the cafeteria and stood by his table. "What's going on here, officer?" he asked. "What is all this, is this man in trouble?" "This lady brought this man in here to be fed," the policeman answered. "Not in here!" the manager replied angrily. "Having a person like that here is bad for business.."

Page 28: Next Wave magazine March 2013

28

Old Jack smiled a toothless grin. "See, lady. I told you so. Now if you'll let me go. I didn't want to come here in the first place."

The woman turned to the cafeteria manager and smiled....... "Sir, are you familiar with Eddy and Associates, the banking firm down the street?"

"Of course I am," the manager answered impatiently. "They hold their weekly meetings in one of my banquet rooms." "And do you make a godly amount of money providing food at these weekly meetings?" "What business is that of yours?" I, sir, am Penelope Eddy, president and CEO of the company." "Oh." The woman smiled again. "I thought that might make a difference." She glanced at the cop who was busy stifling a giggle. "Would you like to join us in a cup of coffee and a meal, officer?" "No thanks, ma'am," the officer replied. "I'm on duty." "Then, perhaps, a cup of coffee to go?" "Yes, maam. That would be very nice."

The cafeteria manager turned on his heel, "I'll get your coffee for you right away, officer."

The officer watched him walk away. "You certainly put him in his place," he said. "That was not my intent. Believe it or not, I have a reason for all this." She sat down at the table across from her amazed dinner guest. She stared at him intently.. "Jack, do you remember me?" Old Jack searched her face with his old, rheumy eyes. "I think so -- I mean you do look familiar." "I'm a little older perhaps," she said. "Maybe I've even filled out more than in my younger days when you worked here, and I came through that very door, cold and hungry." "Ma'am?" the officer said questioningly. He couldn't believe that such a magnificently turned out woman could ever have been hungry. "I was just out of college," the woman began. "I had come to the city looking for a job, but I couldn't find anything. Finally I was down to my

Page 29: Next Wave magazine March 2013

29

last few cents and had been kicked out of my apartment. I walked the streets for days. It was February and I was cold and nearly starving. I saw this place and walked in on the off chance that I could get something to eat."

Jack lit up with a smile. "Now I remember," he said. "I was behind the serving counter. You came up and asked me if you could work for something to eat. I said that it was against company policy." "I know," the woman continued. "Then you made me the biggest roast beef sandwich that I had ever seen, gave me a cup of coffee, and told me to go over to a corner table and enjoy it. I was afraid that you would get into trouble... Then, when I looked over and saw you put the price of my food in the cash register, I knew then that everything would be all right." "So you started your own business?" Old Jack said. "I got a job that very afternoon. I worked my way up. Eventually I started my own business that, with the help of God, prospered." She opened her purse and pulled out a business card.

"When you are finished here, I want you to pay a visit to a Mr. Lyons... He's the personnel director of my company. I'll go talk to him now and I'm certain he'll find something for you to do around the office." She smiled. "I think he might even find the funds to give you a little advance so that you can buy some clothes and get a place to live until you get on your feet... If you ever need anything, my door is always opened to you." There were tears in the old man's eyes. "How can I ever thank you?" he said. "Don't thank me," the woman answered. "To God goes the glory. Thank Jesus...... He led me to you." Outside the cafeteria, the officer and the woman paused at the entrance before going their separate ways.... "Thank you for all your help, officer," she said.

"On the contrary, Ms. Eddy," he answered. "Thank you. I saw a miracle today, something that I will never forget. And. And thank you for the coffee.

THE CHURCH LOOKS LIKE THE

WORLD!

By Apostle Ted Done

We are at a place

in time where the

church looks just

like the world and

the reason it does

is because we

have changed

what the Word

says, instead of doing what it tells us to do.

We do what we want to do and then say, it

really doesn't mean that we have to do it. If

that is true why did God say this? Just

something to think about?

1 Thessalonians 4:3- (AMP)

3 For this is the will of God, that you should

be consecrated (separated and set apart for

pure and holy living): that you should

abstain and shrink from all sexual vice,

4 That each one of you should know how to

[a]possess (control, manage) his own

[b]body in consecration (purity, separated

from things profane) and honor,

5 Not [to be used] in the passion of lust like

the heathen, who are ignorant of the true

God and have no knowledge of His will,

6 That no man transgress and overreach his

brother and defraud him in this matter or

defraud his brother in business. For the

Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we

have already warned you solemnly and

[c]told you plainly.

COVERING

Bishop Derrick Day

Okay, I’m about to deal with something

wildly unpopular. I feel led – indeed,

compelled – to deal with the concept of

“covering.” As a Pastor and a Bishop,

this topic comes up in my circles with

increasing frequency. I have been asked

who is my covering and, also, whom do

I cover?

The short answers are the

Holy Spirit and no one.

This is my opening salvo

– I’ve thrown down this

gauntlet before and, for

the sake of this to me, I

will do it again:

Where, exactly, is the

concept or principle of

“covering” elucidated in

scripture? My contention is that it is not.

Why, then, is it such a big deal? And

what exactly is “covering?” To cover

something means to hide or conceal it,

or to protect it. There is no man that can

hide me from the devil, much less God.

Similarly, there is no man who can

protect me more than the Holy Spirit

who dwells within me. So, what’s the

point?

I have come to the conclusion that those

who subscribe to the notion of

“covering” do so out of either omission

or commission.

The omission camp garners more of my

sympathy. These are the folks who do it

a certain way because “that’s the way

we’ve always done it.” Generally, this is

the band whose heart is in the right

place. They highly venerate tradition

and eschew “rocking the boat,” as they

say to avoid offending those of like

minds. At the risk of suggesting these

folks don’t know better, they truly don’t.

“Covering,” for them, is the way of

continuing their denomination and

preserving the discipline

of the pulpit. They

blissfully ignore the fact

that covering is nowhere

in scripture and stick to

the tenets of

denominational doctrine.

The commission camp,

on the other hand, gleans

no sympathy from me.

These are the folks who

know better and refuse to do better. This

is the group that has revelation but uses

it for the purpose of manipulation.

“Covering” in this context is very

lucrative, as control is exercised over

new initiates into the ministry to regulate

what they preach and teach, extending

that control to financial matters.

“Covering,” here, insists that “spiritual

sons” bear the burden of financially

supporting “spiritual fathers.” This band

knows covering isn’t at all scriptural but

aims to loosely cobble together

Page 34: Next Wave magazine March 2013

34

Scripture for the purpose of justifying

their premise.

An error, by omission or commission, is

still an error and, thus, requires

correction. Both camps are in error but

the former must be led to the truth in

love, whereas the latter will only come to

the truth kicking and screaming.

Now, the concept of spiritual

fathers/spiritual sons is, indeed,

scriptural but this relationship

has been skewed for base

gain. Many spiritual fathers

draw from the models of

both earthly fathers and

our Heavenly Father in

that they bear the

responsibility for the care

and instruction of their

spiritual sons in the

same manner that an

earthly father would. That is,

earthly fathers provide support

and a “covering” for their wife and

children – and the children only until

they come of age.

Where it gets twisted, though, is when

spiritual fathers are financially supported

by their spiritual sons. In the natural,

such a father would be regarded as both

coercive and abusive but this is

considered to be “normal” in ministry.

Equally abusive is when spiritual sons

are expected to be clones of their

spiritual fathers – even to the point of

not doing the prayer and study required

of sermon preparation; opting, instead,

to parrot the sermons of the spiritual

father.

Some may say, well, Preacher, what

about accountability; isn’t that what

“covering” is all about. To that inquiry, I

point to the book of Acts – all the

apostles were on one accord, equal in

responsibility, and accountable to one

another under the headship of the Lord

Jesus.

The concept of “covering” is one

of the typical trappings of vain

religion. Covenant, on the

other hand, is far better. I

would urge the readers of

this article to closely

examine their ecumenical

relationships and ditch the

unbiblical concept of

covering and establish

covenant relationships for

the purpose of accountability.

ICOF CHAPLAINCY

CAMEROON

REPORT

A report written

by chaplain

Natibe ETUBE

SAMPSON on

the visit to the

BUEA

CENTRAL

PRISON AND THE HOTPEC

ORPHANAGE MILE 14 DIRSANDA.

On the 3rd of September 2011 chaplain

NATIBE ETUBE SAMPSON with twelve

members of the Christian Missionary

Assembly (C.M.A) visited the Buea

central prison. We arrived the Prison

premises at 11.25a.m.

God in His infinite mercy worked in a

wonderful way, because before our

arrival the prisoners were out of their

various cells which under normal

circumstances to bring them back to the

cell while it is not yet time for them to do

so is difficult but through Divine

intervention as they were ask to do so

by the prison Warden they did not

hesitate.

We took along with us the word of God,

some clothing’s and shoes for male and

female and some bread, salt, soap that

we shared to the inmates. The Prison

has 8 cells and we were divided in twos,

so we can Minister to the cells. Before

ministering the word of God the whole

prison was filled with praises as the

prisoners sang to praise God by so

doing the presence of God was real; all

over the prison premises. So we share

the word of God and the goods we had

with us. The presence of God was too

much that even for us to leave the

prison premises was as if we should not

leave.

A CROSS SECTION OF INMATES PRAYING

VISIT TO THE ORPHANAGE

From the prison we move to the

HOTPEC ORPHANAGE where we were

highly blessed. What really blesses us

was the amazing fact that we met those

children fasting, you cannot imagine

that children as small as three years

were fastening praying for the nation,

Page 36: Next Wave magazine March 2013

Africa and the world at large and for

themselves.

We presented some clothing and some

bread that we took along to the

orphanage. We also had a good time

there in the orphanage in the presence

of God as we together sing praises and

worship God. Before we left the

orphanage those children prayed for us.

REPORT

other detention centres headed by

Chaplain Natibe Etube Sampson. Thank

God for all those who joined us with

their donations in cash and kind to boss

up the work of God.

The Royal Family Organization in

collaboration with the Ebenezer Baptist

Church Limbe organized an

empowerment (Summit Seminar) twice

this year. The first was from February

2012 and second was in the month of

June to July 18th June08 July 2012 and

also in the month of Aug where was a

We believe that by assisting those in

need– physically, mentally, and

spiritually – and helping them to reach

their full potential, our communities

become stronger, and the lives of each

member become ready to empower

their world with the gospel of Jesus

Christ. Help us and be a part of our

efforts in doing our part to improve our

ever increasing poverty rate,

degeneration of values and overall

quality of Life; by focusing on the needs

and solutions for all these areas

including the neglect of our Nation's

children. We are purposed to impact

the preservation and restoration of the

family. We hold that the Church was

patterned after the family.

We are a mission’s resource network; partnering with churches, organizations, agencies and nonprofits and faith based communities to achieve our mission to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every man woman and child. Africa Our past and present missions include: Drilling water wells, free medical services and in current development of Agriculture &Housing.

India In partnership with ICOF CSU we have started the Patrick Song Academy English School, to help young Indian children to speak English, so they can function in elementary and secondary education.

ICOF Medical missions in conjunction with Project Eye Openers, reaches the poorest, most vulnerable patients, who may not be aware about eye care and free medical camps services. While Project Eye Openers current outreach teams provide free medical services and eye examinations to approximately 400 plus patients in each Village per Medical Camp outing, their ultimate goal is to eliminate obstacles by providing pre-screenings through our Mobile Medical Camps. Evangelism: We have a program called “Project Logos “The program consists of sending bibles to Pakistan translated into their native language. Medical Missions: Through ICOF Medical Missions “Physicians with a cause” provide free medical camps and sharing of the gospel, throughout remote villages in Pakistan. USA We also are focused on Church Home Missions in the USA. Through Community Enhancement that acts as a safety net for individuals and families in need, ICOF Global Missions works to strengthen and enhance communities by working with varies other agencies, churches, non profits within the Faith Based communities already in existence. We are committed to our Senior citizens community including information and referral, food distribution and collaborations with the faith community. Senior Citizens ICOF Home Missions offers personal interactions for the elderly. Providing a much-needed ministry for older people to receive care and human concern. With the baby boomer generation fast approaching their senior years, a swelling tide of concern for the many that will need support and assistance is

evident by the many senior citizen charity groups that continue to organize throughout the country. ICOF Home Missions division offers opportunities for any person to donate time and important resources to this growing challenge. Holistic Family Restoration. A long term priority is to under-served communities. The goal is to lead individuals and families in need towards a better life, improved happiness and inner peace in addition to rebuilding their material lives or improving their living and an educational condition with the power of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ ….body, soul & Spirit. A hundred years from now it will not matter how much money you have, what kind of car you drive or what kind of House you live in, but the world will be a better place because you made a difference in the lives of others”.

MESSAGE TO THE BODY

This is just a general message that I am sending out to all of you, it’s not a prophecy, I do not claim to be a prophet, but I do hear God speak and with many confirmations of prophecy that has come for 2013 through other men of God these are just some thoughts I have for 2013. If you agree with them, praise God, if you don’t, please don’t email me your opinions, I don’t have an email ministry, and when I feel something is from God and send it out, I have no doubt God is involved, so please don’t waste your time emailing me if you don’t agree with it, just press delete! .1. Over and over again it has been said that this is the year of overflow. Many prophets of God have confirmed that this is going to be the year that the Sons and Daughters of God reap in their fields. Where you have been sowing as a minister and not seeing fruit or overflow, this is the year the faithful sowers will see their harvest. .2. The church will come to a place of true established authority. This is something God has been speaking to me over and over again over the past

few weeks. The church is going to come to true maturity and authority. Many pastors and leaders are bound by the systems of men to govern and manage the Kingdom, that is about to end. God has ordained his ministers to run with His Vision and His Heart; many have been bound by boards, elders, deacons and people that control the flow and direction of the church not only with their finances but with their ideals. This Kind of church government is about to collapse, it’s about to be exposed and brought to its knees and seen for what it is – Religion. When a Pastor or leader is bound by the money, opinions and ideas of others who exercise control over the God ordained leadership it is religion in its most pure form. Any activity in the church apart from the instruction and leadership of the Holy Spirit is and remains religion! This kind of control is coming to end. I do not see democracy in the Bible when it comes to God ordained leadership; God ordains a leader to lead and a people to follow the vision of the leader. God anointed Kings to lead, they did not have boards to report to, Moses had the Rod God gave him, and was not subject to other peoples votes to open the red sea, he heard from God and acted in Faith and Love for the peoples best interests. The church is entering in a time where men are going to stand behind their leaders like never before. Many prophets have confirmed that 2013 is going to be a year of established priesthood. God is going to raise men and woman of God who have the character to lead in this way, it is going to be through faith and love that they lead his people, not by sitting around board-room tables discussing “Christian

Page 46: Next Wave magazine March 2013

46

business” strategies for the next year. There is going to be a genuine establishing of the kingdom! .3. Wealth Transfer, we heard this over and over again, but the economic stage is set for this to happen. Many prophets have taught on this and I believe we are going to see the wealth begin to transfer into the hands of those that are faithful to use it for the kingdom, and not their own selfish ambitions. Many un-likely people are going to be raised to be great businessmen and woman for God. People that most of us thought did not have the education, ability or “class” to operate in the business world are going to be raised by God to establish Kingdom business all over the World.

.4. Miracles, Signs and wonders. I believe that in 2013 e are going to see many signs and wonders manifest that have not yet been seen before. Many credible prophets of God have said that in 2013 there will be an increase in the manifestation of gifts, and many gifts that have not even been seen will begin to manifest. It’s going to take us as the Sons and Daughters to be in the Spirit to be able to discern which of these gifts will be form God and which ones will be counterfeits, as many have said that the enemy will try to bring great counterfeits

and deception. The responsibility is therefore ours to be always in the Spirit, knowing and seeking these good things, which can be measured very easily, I believe by testing if an operation of the Spirit has both love and faith. Love and faith is what we are able to test these by, as the enemy is not able to counterfeit those gifts; they are the two elements that he has tried to steal from the church over many church ages, but has remained powerless in brining a counterfeit gift for. 5. Lastly in closing, I think 2013 is o to be a year where God is really going to challenge His church in many ways. Many things we have held onto to keep our “Christian” Identity will be challenged this year. To make it in this Kingdom, people are going to have to be the genuine thing. There is no more time for playing church anymore. In 2013 maturity will begin to manifest in the lives of those that are serious about God, there walk will become their life-style, and they will truly put on the true nature of Christ. It’s going to be an exciting time ahead. I wish every one of you friends in the ministry a blessed and fulfilled 2013, as we labour together in a Kingdom that has no end, the Kingdoms of the World are falling apart, have no hope and have no peace, but of His Kingdom there will be no end!

Blessings Dr Nicolas Marais, Ph.D.

KOREA

FEBRUARY 2013

As we enter February, I am given pause to reflect on the first month of 2013. It has been a busy month! Upon returning to Korea, I am back into a full schedule again, with some extra duties. In the school, we finished up our three week winter camp for English-‘seekers’, and I preached in chapel twice to the students, and made some great new friends. Then, the last week of January, we started our Spring term at Lighthouse International School. It was good to see some familiar faces, and to meet new students in the semester. This term I am not only teaching high school Chemistry and Physics, but also Bible (FIVE different grade levels -*whew!*- but I am LOVING IT)! How many other people get to share the Word of God on a weekly basis in a

discipleship setting with over 70 students a week? As if THAT wasn’t enough, I have preached twice in area churches in the past month, and have launched our weekly Catalyst 316 Bible study for adult seekers. This coming weekend I will be involved in teacher training leading up to our Chungoong English Ministry (CEM) winter retreat later in the month. Mia is still in the Philippines, and we are still working out her visa issues to get her back to Korea as soon as possible. She has been keeping busy as only Mia can; she is not one to be idle. She has been assisting those others who want to come to Korea to work or to visit, and she has also been managing her family’s affairs there in Angono Rizal. She wants to be back in Korea so bad (I want her here, too)!

For me, ministry is a joy, and I am exactly where God wants me to be. I consider it a privilege to serve the King of Kings, and to stand in your place in ministry. So many of you want to go to serve on the foreign field, but can’t because of a variety of reasons. I am here in Korea, standing in your place for you! There are

so many ministry opportunities; it has become difficult to prioritize those ones that the Spirit has been leading. Please know that God is multiplying your prayers and your support for HIS Kingdom!
