ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015

Annual Report 2014-2015

It is an exciting time to be in the CSR space. With the CSR mandate in the

company law here to stay (many were secretly hoping the Modi government

will review or even repeal Section 135 related to corporate social responsibility), more and more

companies are coming forward to take up social issues that resonate with them. We are observing

that corporates are bringing in the same diligence to CSR projects that they would to their regular

business – whether it is tracking, impact evaluation, or program efficiency. This is precisely why this

CSR clause in the company law makes sense.

The other perspective is the impact of this CSR clause and the available CSR budgets on NGOs. To

be absolutely honest, I had concerns whether this would lead to cut-throat competition in the NGO

space, bringing out the worst from a sector that had mostly experienced shortage of funds. I have

been pleasantly surprised and extremely proud of how most NGOs we know are responding. For

example, we at NIIT Foundation have been invited by other NGOs to execute part of their CSR

projects where NIIT Foundation has distinct specialization. In other instances, NGOs have referred

us to corporates for CSR areas where they themselves might be lacking. We ourselves have been

identifying NGO partners who have expertise in areas we don’t, so we can offer a more complete

solution to the corporates.

Collaboration, not competition, is what makes sense in the CSR space!

Annual Report 2014-2015

NIIT Foundation (NF) started in 2005 with the mandate to reach the unreached, uncared and unattended for ensuring inclusive development in India. FY2015 was a good year, where NF was able to meet its budgeted goals for impact as well as overall sustainability. We partnered with 15 new customers to implement their CSR projects. NIIT Foundation has a number of programs that positively impact the underserved of the country through various educational interventions. The intent of NF is to better understand the education and employability issues at the grassroots level and build sustainable training intervention models.

ABOUT PROJECTS

Skill Development Center (SDC): Skill Development Centers are located in urban slums and are

targeted towards making slum youth employable. We provide 4 to 6 months training on personality

development, IT training and service industry which ensures starting level jobs.

District Learning Centers (DLC): DLC is enhancing the employability skills among rural youth. The insufficient skill enhancement opportunities in rural areas are answered by DLCs that cater to rural graduates and post graduates. NGO Accreditation Program (NReach): NGO Accreditation program enables other NGOs to give a structured IT training. 40% of Indian NGOs are involved in IT Training but they often do not have a structured curriculum, courseware or a trained teacher. By entering into partnership with NF, these NGOs can avail not just a structured curriculum, books and training for their instructors but also certification

Hole-in-the-wall Learning Stations: HiWEL facilitates learning for the marginalized children, by providing unconditional and public access to computers through the medium of its Learning Stations. It is an original invention composed of significant innovations in hardware technology, software technology, and cognitive design.

Vijay: The Unbreakable

When a person really desires something, all the

universe conspires to help that person to realize his

dream” - Paulo Coelho

The phrase could not have been better suited to anyone

but Vijay.Ever since he could remember, Vijay wanted to

learn and grow, but the hardships in his life constantly

pulled him away from his dreams .His father’s

alcoholism hardly allowed for any financial stability.

When the situation became dire, Vijay had to take up an

entry level job at a hotel though his uncle’s reference.

For the first time in his life he felt free; however it could

not last long, “The job seemed to be a challenge for me

as all the communication at my workplace was in

English. Quite often I could not understand the

customer’s requests and I felt so helpless that I decided

to quit my job.”

His friend Sandeep, who was already a student at NIIT

Foundation, motivated him to join the course along with

him and improve his English communication & IT skills.

Having no prior experience of handling computers, the

course proved quite difficult for Vijay initially, but he was

determined not go back to his old job. The Center staff

and the methodical training helped Vijay to learn

computers and English which helped him to not just

regain his lost self-confidence but sustain the same

throughout his life.

So profound was his self-recovery that he decided to

take up his old job. Today, Vijay is independent and is

also helping his father recover. He wants to build his

career in the hotel industry. Good luck to Vijay.

Vijay says, “I felt a lot more

confident as I was able to

understand the English

language much better than

before. My supervisor was

amazed to see an

exponential improvement in

me as the customers praised

and were satisfied with my

service. My will and hard

work proved to be fruitful

when I was promoted as a

customer care executive,

with a salary raise!” the

difference in myself”
