October 2012
2012 Committee Tasks• Develop standard effectiveness measures
for conservation actions used to address nationwide fish habitat focus areas.
• Develop and initiate implementation of a strategy to refine the 2010 National Fish Habitat Assessment (Assessment) for 2015 and beyond.
• Develop and submit a Multistate Conservation Grant (MSCG) Pre-proposal and Proposal (if requested) to fund the Science and Data Strategy.
Committee Workplan Outcomes
• Completed Terms of Reference• Completed Science and Data
Strategy• Established Project Tracking
Workgroup– Basic FHP information
• MSGP pre- and full proposals submitted– Proposal not selected for funding
2015 Assessment Strategy• Inland Core Plan
– Refine and update 2010 Assessment– Add new national connectivity analysis– Demonstration projects to bring in
process data– Add lakes and reservoirs to Assessment
2015 Assessment Strategy• Marine Core Plan
– Complete fish/invertebrate stressor analysis• Bring coastal analysis to same level as
inland– Add new spatial framework for coastal
AK analysis– Add new spatial framework for coastal
HI analysis
Assessment Progress• Inland
– Adding fish and mussel datasets from underrepresented regions
– Addressing spatial and temporal data bias– Examining new ways to determine thresholds– Improving connectivity analysis– Adding new surface mining information– Investigating use of Section 303d data layer– Examining how to incorporate regional datasets– Incorporating lakes and lakesheds into assessment– Adding HI fish information and refining assessment
analysis– AK small-scale catchment delineation analysis
Assessment Progress• Marine
– Adding fish and shellfish datasets • Focusing on Gulf of Mexico pilot project data• Started on data acquisition for Atlantic and
Pacific Coasts– Developing new analytical approach– Great Lakes Assessment
• Moving independently forward with funding from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust and GLBFHP
2013 Science and Data Priorities
• Refine committee membership• Catalog and review FHP assessments
– $20,000 to fund one Science and Data Committee meeting – NFHP Board Funding
• Develop data transfer methods and begin to embed detailed FHP data– $197,000 for applications developer, metadata
specialist and system support – In-kind USGS
2013 Science and Data Priorities• Develop dataflow practices for BMPs in data
management and curation using cataloged FHP information– $63,500 to support cataloging data and developing
BMPs – In-kind USGS• Continue refining inland assessment following
core plan – $151,000 to support assessment development – USFWS– $42,300 for data management support – In-kind USGS

2013 Science and Data Priorities – Without Resources
• Incorporation of connectivity, hydrology, and fish and mussel data into the Inland Assessment– Requesting $300,000 for 2 FTEs and multiple
workshops• Incorporation of connectivity, hydrology,
and fish and mussel data along with new analytical approaches into the Marine Assessment– Requesting $150,000 for 2.0 FTEs
2013 Science and Data Priorities – Without Resources
• Development of standardized effectiveness measures for FHP connectivity projects including incorporating fine-scale FHP data– Requesting $206,000 for 2 FTEs
• Development and attribution of socioeconomics data into the Assessment– Requesting $100,000 for contracted staff
PROJECT EFFECTIVENESS MEASURES WORKGROUP
2012 Outcomes: • Consultation with AFWA – Wildlife
Diversity Director• Initial contact with Foundations of
Success– Scope of work is underway
PROJECT EFFECTIVENESS MEASURES WORKGROUP
• Establish workgroup: – 2 participants from Science & Data
Committee– Participants from project tracking working
group– 3 representatives from FHPs
PROJECT EFFECTIVENESS MEASURES WORKGROUP
• Workgroup process: – Evaluate existing results chains
developed for State Wildlife Grants for common conservation actions
– Identify gaps specific to NFHP– Develop new measures as appropriate
